Catacombs/In The Depths Of R'lyeh/Moribund Records/2007 CD Revew

Catacombs is a one man project originally from Arizona now Michigan which I would describe as funeral doom/death and this is a review of their 2007 release "In the Depths of R'lyeh".

Drums on this recording are mostly slow throughout the album and they contain a lot of doom, while the bass playing utilizes a dark and distorted type of rhythm that makes you think about death and dying.

Rhythm guitars on the cd are slow, dark and heavy riffs, while the guitar leads are filled with a lot of sorrow and contain a lot of melody. as for the vocals they are low pitched doom/death metal growls that give the music a very deep and dark sound.
Keyboards when they are utilized sound haunting and give the music a dark ambient edge.

Production on this recording sounds really good and you can hear all of the instruments very well, as for the lyrics they draw a huge inspiration from Howard Phillips Lovecraft's Chhtulu Mythos which have also been the creation of the Necronomicon and R'lyeh Text Grimoires, even though a lot of people said that Dr. John Dee translated the Necronomicon in English during the 15th century.

In my opinion this is a really good album and I would recommend this cd to anyone who is into the heavier side of doom metal or if you are a fan of Lovecraft or the Necronomicon. Standout tracks include "In the Depths of R'leyh" and "Where No Light Hath Shone(But For That of the Moon". HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
