Trillion Red/Metaphere/badGod Music/2012 CD Review

Trillion  Red  are  a  band  from  San  Francisco,  California  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  with  a  musical  style  that  I  would  describe  as  being  Dark Progressive  Avant  Garde  Metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2012  album  "Metaphere"  which  was  released  by  badGod  Music.

Drums  range  from slow  to  mid  paced  drumming  with  not  much  in  the  way  of  fast  playing  or  blast  beats,  while t he  synths  and  sound  effects  bring  a  very  atmospheric,  dark  ambient  and  experimental  avant  garde  noise  sound  to  the  music,  as  for  the  bass  playing  it  has  a  very  strong  and  powerful  sound  with  heavy  riffing  that  dominates  throughout  the  recording.

Rhythm  guitars range from  slow  to  mid  paced  avant  garde  metal  riffs  that  are  heavily  influenced  by  noise  and  experimental  music  along  with  some  soft  and  clean  playing  that  gives  the  music  a  progressive  feeling,  while  the  lead  guitars  are  very  distorted  and  psychedelic  sounding  guitar  solos  and  leads,  as  for  the  acoustic  guitars  when  they  are  utilized  they  use  finger  picking  and  full  chords  to  add  another  dimension  of  darkness  to  the  music.

Vocals a re  mostly  clean  signing  and  spoken  word  parts  with  not much  in  the  way  of  the  more  aggressive  sounding  vocals  that  where  present  on  their  previous  release,  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  strong,  powerful,  heavy  and  professional  sound  where  you  can  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording  with  some  of  the  songs  being  long  and  epic  in  length.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  recording  from  Trillion  Red  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  enjoy  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Trichoroic  Part  I  :  In  Ever  Loving  Shadows"  "Trichoriac  Part  III  :  Ephemeral  Light"  "Parables  And  Levitation"  and  "Dawn  State".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.

Nick Millevoi/In White Sky/The Flenser/2012 CD Review

Nick  Millevoi  is  a  guitarist  from  San  Francisco,  California  that  plays  a  mixture  of  drone,  experimental,  noise  and  classical  music  and  this  is  review  of  his  2012  album  "In  White  Sky"  which was  released  by  The  Flenser.

There  is  no  other  musical  instrument  present  on  this  recording  except  guitars  and  the  music  is  all  instrumental  with  the  songs  being  long  and  epic  in  length,  while  their  are  still  some  distorted  avant garde  noise  effects  being  thrown  into  the  music  at  times.

Guitars  are  all  distorted  rhythm's  that  combine  drone,  noise,  experimental  and  classical  music  together  with  a  great  amount  of  melody  that  leans  towards  the  avant  garde  side  mixed  in  with  a  great  amount  of  distortion  that  brings  the  metal  influence  into  the  music.

The  song  concepts  revolve  around  dark  themes,  while  the  production  has  a  very  dark,  heavy  raw  and  primitive  sound  which  makes  the  experimental/drone  side  of  the  music  sound  very  heavy  and  powerful.

In  my  opinion  Nick  Millevoi  is  a  great  sounding  experimental/drone  composer  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Slowly  Dark"  and  "Endless  Unfolding  Hallways".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.

The Cold View Interview

1. Can you tell us a little bit about this project for those that have never heard of you before?

The Cold View is a small Drone and Funeral Doom project which is completely run by myself. It arose in November 2011 when I was experimenting with some open source and free music software for Linux. There was a very high potential for creating professional compositions. After finishing experimenting and moving forward to a more serious approach the first song Empty November was created. I was convinced that I will be able to go on to further satisfying results, even as a one-man project. I set the goal to create one song per month aligned to the concept of a winter album. I wanted to bring in my special feelings and nature experiences of the particular winter month. Maybe I needed an outlet for the creative pressure I had inside.

2. How would you describe your musical sound?

The sound of Weeping Winter is of a very droning, bass driven and noisy kind. It is oriented on Funeral Doom and maybe also Industrial. It's a dark and depressed, desperate and brutal sound. I wanted to create sound structures and themes that get varied and iterated, meditated in the end. The compositions are in one way abstract, but in the other way there are always points and simple melodies one can hang on.

3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?

According to the concept all lyrics center on winter. My emotions affected by personal experiences and the influence of the nature and the winter climate flowed into the lyrics and also the music. But in the end one must not forget that Doom has its stylistic devices.

4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the band’s name?

Seven years ago I had the very small band project Bestial (http://www.bestial-metal.com/) with a friend of mine, who also mixed and mastered my current record. I have chosen "The Cold View" as the name of our second demo, but it never got finished or even really started. The name was perfect for my new project. It derived from a term of Nietzsche who in this case described a philosophical concept, a concept how to view the world or reality around.

5. Currently there is only one member in the band, are you planning on expanding the line up in the future or do you choose to remain solo?

I have to admit that I do not really know what ways I will go in the future. I only know that the next step has to be a step forward. One possibility could be to found a band with several members. But currently I do not wonder too much about this. I am happy with doing things self dependent.

6. Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label and if so what kind of label do you feel that would be a perfect fit for your music?

I was looking for a label for some time. But in spite of the very positive feedback of befriended musicians the interest of the labels for this very underground record was too little. There is not a high commercial potential for this kind of music.

7. Are there any other musical projects besides this band or is this full time?

Currently there are no other projects. The Cold View is also not full time. I have a full time job that involves a lot of my time.

8. What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?

As I stated before it has to get a step forward. A full band line-up could bring even more creative input.

9. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

I do listen to many styles of Metal, mainly different types of Doom and Black Metal. There are lots of good bands I like to listen to and who influence me, too many I could mention at this place.

10. Does Occultism play any role in your music?

Occultism or Satanism does not play any role in my music or life. If I use diabolic ideas it is just for stylistic devices like metaphors. I have an antireligious world view. This involves Satanism or paganism or other cult related things, too. Nevertheless a certain kind of spiritualism is an aspect in my music and also in my own philosophy. But this kind of spiritualism emerges from the unconscious and from deep, intense experiences of nature.

11. Outside of music what are some of your interests?

Music is the most important of my interests, but I also like art and literature. Currently I'm reading some novels of E. T. A. Hoffmann; I love to dive into his dark, fantastic and insane worlds.

Eye Of Solitude Interview

1. Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?
Sure, on the 25th of June, we have released a brand new album, our second full length entitled "Sui Caedere" released by Kaotoxin Records (Fra),have digitally re-released our  sold out self titled EP and we're getting ready for gigs with a carefully chosen set list, which includes songs from our first full length "The Ghost", "Awoken By Crows" EP and "Sui Caedere" album.

2. How would you describe the musical sound of the new album and how it differs from previous recordings?
Each session has given us more experience, starting with "The Ghost",and ending with "Sui Caedere", which is more mature. The sound varies from funeral doom to death metal, all encased in a sombre atmosphere. The new album sends the listener to a dark place, full of grief, anguish and despair, it's an introspective journey towards one's own self. We've tried to achieve a continuous overture of pain.

3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the new release?
To answer that we must point that"Sui Caedere" is latin for "Suicide". The lyrics are all about negativity, anguish and despair. Each track is a reflection on life itself and at the same time, a constant struggle with suicidal thoughts, an analysis of what makes a person thinks about suicide and untimately commit this final act. We can say that the tracklist is a whole journey of how it starts, continues and ends. The difference is we have taken the concept a bit further and on the album,we try to immortalise what happens AFTER.

4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the bands name?
Eye Of Solitude in our vision means the centre point of loneliness. An abstract if i may add. A culminative point when an individuals find themselves surrounded by themselves. A constructive or destructive exploration of mind and soul's " Beyond".  It represents a personal rebirth, but in one's solitude, in emptiness, a high contrast of what one might think the name represents.

5. Has the band been able to play out live or is this strctly a studio project?
We have had several live appearances, thus we are not a studio project. We do not gig a lot,out of various reasons, the most important being the preparation of our live outs. Now, with a brand new album and with a brand new line-up we are prepring a bit more for live shows. Whether it be film projections, stage background, why not live actors, wheere the stage allows it. All these take time and a lot of preparation thus we are waiting for the proper time to unleash it all upon the world.

6. Currently the band is signed to Kaotoxin Records how did you get in contact with this label and how would you describe the support that they have given you so far?
I met Nico of Kaotoxin in France while touring with my other band Unfathomable Ruination. Nico has arranged a gig in Lille and that's how we met. From there on it's all history hahaha. We got along famously both on a professional and personal level, and it went like that ever since. Kaotoxin is an extremely professional label, the support we got is incredible. Just knowing that someone believes in you as a band is probably the best support ever. All others are just material things.

7. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of underground metal?
Personally, I think "Sui Caedere" has been very well received, both by listeners and media. We have had some great reviews coming from UKEM (https://www.facebook.com/ukemrecords)
and Hymnes Funeraires (https://www.facebook.com/HymneFuneraire) and hopefully it wont stop here.

8. What is going on with the other musical projects these days?
With Unfathomable Ruination (brutal death UK) we are about to release our first full length under Sevared records (USA). We have recorded with 16 Cellar Studios (Fleshgod Apocalypse, Hour Of Penance) and the result is devastatingly good. We've just played a kick ass gig with brutal death metal pioneers Malignancy and friends Cephalic Impurity and Murder Intentions, and for now we are preparing for more gigs.

9. What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?
We are always pushig ourselves to raise the bar. I must give away one of the insides of the band though haha, after finishing writing "Sui Caedere" I needed time to recover, the sensation is extremely unsettling and it got me towards the end. There is a huge need for mental stability to write over an hour's worth of desolating music. I reckon the next album is going to be even more devastating, more disturbing and unsettling. I can only expect better and better.

10. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
I'd rather not give any names only because they would be too many, but for Eye Of Solitude, the main influences are based in doom and doom death styles. Of course, we include various elements in our music, thus it's more of an amalgam of genres, which alltogether make EOS' music what it really is. We try to create music for the soul, from our souls.

11. How would you describe your views on Paganism?
I respect what everyone believes in,some people take belief to the extreme and that would be the negative part in the whole equation in my humble opinion.

12. Outside of music, what are some of your interests?
I enjoy most good things in life,i like nature a lot, given the fact that I'm Romanian and back home it abunds in relief forms, especially  mountains,i like animals, both as pets and as wild life forms,I enjoy spending time with all those close to me,my brothers in the bands, and family, but mostly I enjoy making music. It's my life long passion.

13. Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?
We would like to thank you for this oportunity to share a few words with all of those who have'nt heard us yet,to say hello to our close ones and to have the pleasure of this interview!
