Spaghetti Blacc/Techniques N' Tactics/Black Ski Industries/2024 Full length Review

This  is  the  final  Review  of  a  recording  from  new  York's  Spaghetti  Blacc  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  mixture  of  experimental,  noise,  metal  and hip  hop  and  the  album  was  released  in  2024  and  called  "Techniques  N'  Tactics"  which  was  released  by  Black  Ski  Industries.

Harsh  noises,  electric  guitars  and  drum  beats  start  off  the  album  while  a  couple  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  Some  of  the  drums  also  add  in  touches  of  free  jazz  along  with  the  music  also  getting  very  experimental  and  avant  garde  sounding  at  times  and  some  of  the  songs  are  also  instrumentals.

Guitar  solos  and  leads  can  also  be  heard  briefly  while  a  lot  of  the  first  half  of  the  recording  is  also  improvised.  Harsh  screams  are  also  introduced  on  one  of  the  tracks  along  with  one  song  also  adding  in  some  ritualistic  style  chants  and  operatic  vocals  and  some  of  the  music  also  mixes  in  elements  of  world  music.

Percussion  style  instruments  are  also  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  album  along  with  a  lot  of  the  tracks  also  sounding  very  different  from  each  other  The  second  half  of  the  album  also  adds  in  touches  of  funk  music  and  goes  for  more  of  a  hip  hop  direction  which  also  mixes  in  a  lot  of  raps  and  they  also  change  the  pace  by  mixing  in  a  small  amount  of  Gregorian  chants  on  one  song  and  another  experimental  track  before  going  back  into  rap  mode.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  lyrics  cover  occultism,  dark,  political  and  philosophical  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Spaghetti  Blacc  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  experimental,  noise,  metal  and  hip  hop,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Devil  Auction"  'EMF  Essence"  "13  Years"  and  "Inter-Proxyma  Quotient".  8  out  of  10.

Olli Hanninen and Sami Hynninen Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?

Sami: Me and Olli have known each other since the early 90’s, and for the last 20 years we have been talking about doing something together. Then when we finally started the “Chambers” it also took several years to be completed as we are very busy elsewhere. In the meantime I have been working with Reverend Bizarre, Opium Warlords, Tähtiportti, Spiritus Mortis, Azrael Rising, Pussies, and so on.

Olli: Even though we seem to come to the music field from totally different angles we actually have more in common than one would think. We share a generational experience and a deep fascination towards 80’s and 90’s alternative, underground, indie and DIY scenes in music, arts and culture in general. In that sense we speak the same language but small subtle nuanced differences in musical taste has drifted us to work on seemingly different genres. Working with Sami was very comfortable and easy.

2.In September you have an album coming out, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style that you went for on the recording?

Sami: Musically it is a crossover/experimental/avantgarde album that can’t be pinpointed to any particular genre. The overall lyrical atmosphere is dark and hostile, but the music stretches from darkness to some kind of semi-light. But it is very nihilist work.

Olli: Years after we planted the seed of working together one day, I stumbled into Sami in Lohja. By then I had drifted away from Skweee music and was producing a more ambient, drone and noise related soundscapes for no particular reason. I played some of it to Sami, he liked it and we instantly decided that we will execute the long lived idea. Sami came up with the concept and lyrics. I did much of the pre-production while recovering from a hip surgery. The opiate painkillers took my straight edge mind to places where it hadn’t visited before. We also had great productive sessions in my then studio Clawztrophobia Chamber. They were somewhat free and unplanned yet determined and effective. We sort of let the music and sounds take us where it wanted to and took the end result as it was given, at the same time still being the masters of the process. That lead to the diverse but coherent album we now have.

3.Both of the band members come from musical projects that are the complete opposite of each other, do you feel that it adds to the originality that is presented on the recording?

Sami: Yes, definitely! Although on this album we shaked off most of our past projects and just worked freely as a team. I enjoyed it greatly! We both have a vast appetite for music from modern art music to hc punk and beyond. It all sounds here.

Olli: Yeah, we didn’t let our pasts dominate our future. We merely used what we knew as tools to achieve the entirety we wound up with. We both brought ideas from our own perspectives and worked our way together to the common ground.

4.The lyrics on the new recording are a concept album based upon the Buddhist Hell, can you tell us a little bit more about the lyrics and your interest in Buddhism?

Sami: Well, first of all, the lyrics are more like a modern reflection of those songtitles, which are each a chamber of this Hell, so I did not really write strictly just about the Buddhist Hell, but more like sucked an inspiration from it. But yes, I have had interest in Buddhism, especially Zen Buddhism since my childhood years. Later in my studies it became bit more scholar thing, but still interests me anyway, However I have to say that I am even more interested in Tibetan pre-Buddhist Bön religion.

Olli: Buddhism is one of the world religions or rather philosophy in which I can personally find some things to relate to as an agnostic. Of course there are bad sides to Buddhism as well as in any belief that has been institutionalized, but way less than for instance in the desert religions. It’s more peaceful and shows common sense rather than fundamentalist bigotry and proselytizing. Of course I’m not as aware of all the details as Sami is. He’s been studying these things a lifetime.

5.Throughout the album you also made references to other mythologies, can you tell us a little bit more about the mythologies you referenced with the new album?

Sami: Actually I am not sure do I know what you mean… to me those lyrics are very closely tied to so called every day life. Then again MY every day life is strongly tied to metaphysicism and mysticism.

Olli: I see how one might come to such conclusion. Sami is infused with mysticism to the point where his everyday life seems to outsiders as one big ritual. That’s one of his powers leading him to become such great and magickal musician and persona.

6.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

Sami: It is called Den döende dandyn (The Dying Dandy in English) and was painted in 1918 by Nils Dardel. We liked the idea that here we see one kind of chamber as well, and it really suits the visual image and layout of the album. It was the only artwork we ever considered to this.

7.Are there any plans to bring the music to the live stage?

Sami: No. This is very definitive studio work. Besides, I myself am slowly retiring from doing gigs altogether. I never liked doing them. I am a studio producer and musician.

Olli: There would be only a few if any occasions where we could fit in with this project so it is easier and more rewarding to leave it to the studio.

8.The new album is going to be released on 'Svart Records', how did you get in contact with this label?

Sami: I have been working with them quite much from the day one. They have released a pile of my  albums.

Olli: Svart re-released my rap group Ronskibiitti’s 2006 album Eipä Kestä and my 2004 “solo” effort Hammaspeikko – Karies Mundi on vinyl in 2017 and released our spin off groups Ronski & Satanic’s – Täältä tullaan kuolema album in 2018. In the meantime I found myself working full time for the label as a producer. That has turned out to be a good thing for Chambers too. I can keep a fairly close eye on the efforts the label is doing for the album and see that the promo and marketing department doesn’t fuck it up too bad.

9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to the music by fans of experimental and other underground genres?

Sami: So far, nothing! Let us wait until it is out. But I am not expecting for any miracles. This album is not for everyone. And then again it COULD offer something to everyone.

10.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part of?

Sami: I am working on the second album of me and legendary Läjä Äijälä, an album with old Finnish sludge band Loinen, a Pussies album, a harsh noise album called Noiseworks, reissues/compilations from The Candles Burning Blue and Spiritus Mortis, and of course new album from Opium Warlords. I have also done vocals to one black metal album that will come out next year. In 2023 I will finish all the above, and then cut my actions down to one to three projects, which include at least more work with Läjä Äijälä and Opium Warlords.

Olli: I released a collaborative album with Tatu Metsätähti aka Mesak called Repullinen skittejä few moons ago. It’s out on a cassette by Cudighi Records from Los Angeles. We are also planning to record a new album with Ronskibiitti this fall. Otherwise the lack of time and energy is keeping me away from creating new music at the moment.

11.Are there any plans for future releases?

Sami: No, but then again I do not close that door completely. It was great fun working with Olli, whom I consider as one of my very few friends.

Olli: I have actually an idea I haven’t discussed with Sami yet. We’ll see if it takes wind...

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Sami: Whitehouse, The Fall, early gothic rock like Bauhaus, Christian Death and Joy Division, Skullflower, Steve Albini’s bands, Funkadelic, Arvo Pärt, Burzum, Classic Nouveaux… right now I am listening to Unleashed in the East by Judas Priest.

Olli: Personal influences for this record have been among others Depeche Mode, Swans, 16 Horsepower and Woven Hand, The Downward Spiral era Nine Inch Nails, Ministry’s Psalm 69 album, Current 93, Sisters Of Mercy, Inner City, Black Box, Adamski, El-P’s production work from Company Flow to Run The Jewels, Dälek, Clipping. and Gravediggaz 6 ft Deep album.

Lately I’ve been listening mostly 90´s alternative and indie rock like Sonic Youth, Pixies, Melvins, Mudhoney, Babes In Toyland etc. Also a lot of punk, hardcore (especially 80’s and 90’s New York hardcore), death metal from late 80’s to mid 90’s and psychedelic rock, pop and jazz from the 60’s and 70’s.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Sami: I hope that people dare to check our album out even if the single releases might have driven them away. This is so massive work that it can’t be wrapped to couple of singles. It has SO much in it.

Olli: True. Taking one or two songs out of the context might almost do more harm to it.

Dylan Dilella Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit more about your solo project?

It's solo guitar music. My solo material started as more focused on composition, and less on atmosphere and effects. WIth the new album Human Shield, I've gotten a lot deeper into the drone and noise facets of the music.

2.You have a new album coming out during the end of July, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style that you went for on the recording?

I would say the new album has taken the experimental components of my music to the forefront. I was really focused on texture, atmosphere, and allowing sounds to breathe while I was recording the album.

3.All of the music on the album was instrumental, are you open to working with vocals on future releases?

I might eventually incorporate some vocals, I've always wanted to dip my toe into doing that.

4.You also have experience playing technical and progressive death metal, how would you compare the musical style of your solo project to the musical style of your previous works?

Pyrrhon has a fairly prominent improvisation and noise influence as well. There are sections of the latest Pyrrhon album that would fit in with my solo material.

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the album cover?

It's a collage that I made in photoshop, using a variety of images that I found striking.

6.With this project you record everything by yourself but have experience playing with other musicians, which one  do you prefer?

I think I ultimately prefer making music as a band, but there's something so immediate and fulfilling about dictating the entire process (including scheduling etc). I definitely want to make more music entirely on my own in the future.

7.The new album is going to be released on 'Nefarious industries', how would you compare working with this label to other labels that you have been a part of in the past?

Nefarious has been excellent to work with so far, they have a great roster of bands and they are super friendly and professional.

8.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your solo material by fans of harsh noise, experimental and metal?

I've only just started seeing the reaction to the new material, but people seem to be feeling it so far.

9.What is going on with 'Pyrrhon' these days?

We just announced a 2 week US tour this fall with Imperial Triumphant, so we're really looking forward to that. We've started dabbling with writing new music as well recently.

10.Where do you see yourself heading into as a musician during the future?

I want to continue to solidify Pyrrhon and my solo material. I might have another project or two up my sleeve, you'll just have to keep a lookout for that. I also recently started teaching guitar full-time, which I had been working towards for a while.

11.What are you listening to nowadays?

I started listening to John Fahey for the first time recently. Absolutely mindblowing acoustic blues/Americana. Jack Rose too. A few other things that I've been putting on a lot: Death Grips, Merzbow, The Cure, Nas, Morbid Angel, Converge, Ministry, Lightning Bolt, Tortoise, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, AFX, Albert King, Howlin Wolf....

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Thank you!

1.Kalabrian Syndrome is an instrumental trio (guitar, bass, drums) that blends in heavy rock, psychedelic, drone, ambient and noise elements always in a dynamic frame, that uses all sort of patterns to deliver a story behind every song.

2.So far you have released a n ep, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style that you went for on the recording?

2.We wanted it to be straight forward ,no polishing, no editing ,no sort of sound design trickery that the rest of the music business had fed us .So ,we went to the studio played the songs live ,hit the rec button, choose which version of the song works best. Did some mixing and mastering and there you have it.

3.So far all of your music has been instrumental, are you open to using vocals on future releases?

3.Really don’t know, Voice is a just another instrument right? With one major difference….the frequencies that produces mean something….there are words….so it has to be well tuned and really have something interesting to say….difficult task. If the right person ,that can fill that role comes our way, we re happy to try it.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Kalbrian Syndrome'?

4.Its just and Inside joke between the band and friends ,so as the titles of the songs.

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the ep cover?

5.It is a photo taken in our home studio in the middle off a session by our friend kellaki.

6.Has the band done any live shows or open to the idea?

6.Of course we are open to the idea ,but covid-19 had other plans.

7.The ep was released by 'Submersion Records'. how did you get in contact with this label? 7.Submersion Records is a known label in the Underground scene in Thessaloniki and good friends of us.

8.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of experimental and heavier genres?

8.its been great so far, we love the fact that different people have different favourite track on the EP.

9.When can we expect a full length and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

9.Really don’t know, we are constantly writing new material, we have some very exciting tracks so far, we experimenting with some new gear ,new sounds. We would like to have a full length album out somewhere in the beginning of 2022

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

10.We are 3 very different people ,each and everyone brings his own thing to the table., and I think that is pretty obvious if you listen to the EPI. Now if the topic comes to bands,9 out 10 it will lead to a major pointless argument.

11.What are some of your non musical interests?

11.We play for fun …we don’t pay bills from music. All of us have day jobs.. the little time that we can spent in our day for fooling around goes to the band.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

12.Thanks for reviewing our debut EP and supporting us. Cheers!

Atmospheric  sounding  drones  start  off  the  ep  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  stoner  metal  direction  while  the  melodies  add  in  touches  of  blues  rock.  All  of  the  music  is  also  instrumental  along  with  some  bass  guitar  leads  also  being  utilized  at  times  and  the  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  distorted  style.

A  lot  of  the  music  also  sounds  improvised  while  the  music  also  has  its  psychedelic  and  experimental  moments.  Elements  of  avant  jazz  can  also  be  heard  in  the  song  structures  along  with  a  couple  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  as  well  as  all  of  the  tracks  also  sounding  different  from  each  other  and  towards  the  end  touches  of  ambient  can  also  be  heard  and  the  closing  track  also  adds  in  a  small  amount  of  clean  playing.

Kalabrian  Syndrome  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  experimental,  ambient,  drone,  psychedelic,  jazz,  blues  rock  and  stoner  metal  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own  as  well  as  keeping  everything  instrumental  while  the  production  sounds  very  dark.

Kaschade Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the musical project since the recording and release of the new album?

Spontaneous. From the base. Example in which you need to wrestle to get the end result. The discipline of composing. Or as jazz musicians say - we get inspiration from everywhere. Like the cycle of nature or the creation of the universe.

2.In October you released a new album, musically how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

All albums are ambient but with psychedelic addition. Of course experimental. And this new one is mostly electronic. The album is thoroughly done. Step by step. Handwork. It’s an ambient psychedelic album. Traces of jazz music. And too much of experimental space music with dark moods. Is more based on a themes, on a solo, on improvisation, on a point, comma.

3.From 2016 there was no music being released while there was an album released every year from 13 to 16, can you tell us a little bit more about what has been going on during that time frame?

Yes, there was no music at the time. But in 2017 I work more compositions for "Performance" album. 2018 I started to compose two singles for the "Nightmares" and it was issued in 2019. Besides, in 2018 I make music for a documentary "Surrealisam". It's about a Kaschade music. Also I recorded one song with Danish ambient jazz guitarist Alex Jønsson. 2019 was a year for exploring technique on synthesizer and saxophone. Track "Kim the Vampire" and "Chlorine Punk" was boring. Kim is epic and I need to much time to compose and arrange that. That's it.

4.What are some of the themes and images you bring into the newer music?

I don't want to localize compositions and create worlds near worlds in foggy fantasy. The listener has the full right to walk through the valley of light and to snatch monsters from the womb.

5.On past references you made references to Oscar Wilde, Phillip K. Dick and> Ron Hubbard in the song titles, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in there writings and are there any other authors or writers that have been influential to you?

You noticed. Phenomenal. I like Oscar Wilde and his dandy look. I have wish  I performed that in a huge coat. To have renaissance wig and two long hair Pekingese. One Pekingese in the left under the armpits and other Pekingese   in the right  Pekingese. To be fat and sweaty. In this performance I don’t play. That’s it…Philip K. Dick is good but I like more Ray Bradbury. Also I like Stanisław Lem and Stanislav Grof. Right now I reed Christoph Martin Wieland: History of the Abderites

6.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Kaschade'?

Kaschade is a musician who saw a Koala in the bathroom along with Grey alien. Grey alien was wearing a wig and had neon blue water over it. Also, Kaschade is a German surname but it sounds like a marzipan and wild chestnut perfume.

7.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

It’s a green organism and it fly using outgrowth . Outgrowth like fungal disease. They are mutating little balls  from the plasticine and caught lichen. Many alien organism you can see in Surrealisam and in a upcoming documentary. First i painted according to role models as Leonadro da Vinci and  Rembrandt van Rijn. Than came cartoon How the Grinch Stole Christmas! from 1966. Grinch, Pink Panther, The Ant and the Aardvark, they improved my drawing. That's it.

8.Have you done any live performances with this solo project?

I have two music visual performance. This epidemic situation interrupted another two performance. I don’t know. I have plane also to promote a music documentary on festivals. But really I feel more happy when I compose a music. Everything is a discography and nothing more.

9.The last few albums have been released by 'Interphone Records', can you tell us a little bit more about this label?

Performance and this new record is under Interphone Records. Interphone is only record label who registered my albums. Another albums was under records labels in England and Belgium. Interphone Records take care about my albums. And it is possible that they will publish next year my "Nightmares" album on the vinyl.

10.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of experimental, ambient and noise?

This are not popular genres. But this is gift for a superlative above-average listeners. One of this genres are just a little land but for other people. This is a universe.

11.Where do you see yourself heading into as a musician during the future?

Most musicians are not fans of the issue like I am - what are these role models. I think, I know, the plans are easier. A normal organized person should plan even if everything is unpredictable. Promotion of the album -Nightmares as well as the music documentary - Dreams.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

I always say what I listen to first. I had role models before, before the first album was released. I always tried to put other people's music aside and start composing in my own way. This is how our own worlds are created.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

It's important just to be alive and creative. To be a positive person and nothing more. That important.

The Coal Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

The Coal is an improvisational duet from Athens, Greece, that focuses on playing on the spot with musical stimuli that draws inspiration from ambient, folk, jazz and experimental music. The relationship between the drummer and the guitarist of the band pre-existed from the school years as they played together in their first groups at the age of 15. So we are essentially talking about a musical relationship of at least ten years even though the first release is in 2017.

2.Recntly you have released a new album musically how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

Every live or release of the group is an one off performance, it is freely improvised, meaning that nothing has been organized from before, neither structure or form, not even a single rythm or melody, it's all played on the spot. So, we could say that every release is an x-ray to our inner self at the particular time that we recorded that.

3.So far all of the music has been instrumental, are you open to using vocals on future releases?

Yes, we would be open to that, if the vocalist would like to follow our way of creating music and suits our style.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'The Coal'?

The Coal, from our point of view, refers to the fact that our music constantly refers to icy black and white images.

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

If you allow us, we would like to leave open for interpretation for each listener.

6.Currently there are only 2 members in the band, are you open  to expanding the line up or do you prefer to remain a duo?

We are talking lately on working on with a cellist that we think that she could fit in well to our ensemble.

7.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

So far all our live shows have been beautiful for us, each one for different reasons. But the most impressive was definitely this at the Empros Theater as we played at the end of the last day of the Krama festival, and went out at 1 o'clock in the evening. A really laxative set. We would also add our live in Marseille in a very small space where in the end we did a jam with a violinist who played the same day with us, in a very festive atmosphere where a lot of irrelevant people came in to listen to us. Finally we would mention our last live during the last summer, where we played in an outdoor area in the city overlooking a large highway and infinite apartment buildings .. Our stage presence is an outrageous jazz performance.

8.The new album was released on 'Submersion Records', how did you get in contact with this label?

Sakis from the label contacted with me telling me about the new label. He asked me to send him some of my stuff that I wanted to be released, and in the end they ended up on Atlas.

9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your recordings by fans of experimental music?

Apart from the people at Marseille that they watched our show and they loved it, we don’t have any other reactions yet.

10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

We like the idea that we don’t have any idea at all on where the band is heading into musically during the future.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Some musicians would be Brian Blade, Bill Frisell, Robbie Basho and Jon Christensen.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Let’s hope that the live performances will come back soon.. Thank you very much for the interview.
