The Coal are a duo from Greece that plays a mixture of ambient, avant jazz, experimental and blues and this is a review of their 2020 album "Atlas" which was released on cassette by Submersion Records.
Drum beats start off the album while drones can also be heard in the background while the music also gets very experimental sounding at times. Some of the tracks are also very long and epic in length along with some of the guitars also adding in more of a non traditional approach which also gives the recording more of an avant garde feeling.
Influences of jazz and blues are also added into some parts of the music while all of the tracks are also instrumentals. When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very melodic style along with all of the tracks also sounding very different from each other as well as the songs also adding in an improvised atmosphere at times, touches of Mediterranean music and ambient can also be heard in some parts of the recording.
The Coal plays a musical style that takes ambient, avant jazz, blues, drone and experimental and mixes them together to create a sound of their own as well as keeping everything instrumental while the production sounds very dark.
In my opinion The Coal are a very great sounding mixture of ambient, avant jazz, blues, drone and experimental and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this duo. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Earth Language" "Atlas"and "Sleeping Giant". 8 out of 10.
