The Owl are a solo project from the United Kingdom that has had music reviewed before in this zine and plays a mixture of ambient, drone, noise and doom metal and this is a review of his 2020 album "Ambient Piano Works Volume 1" which will be released on November 20th by Trepanation Recordings.
Atmospheric and cinematic sounding drones start off the album while the pianos also get very avant garde and experimental at times as well as using a variety of many different sounding keys. Elements of ambient can also be heard quite a bit throughout the recording and the distorted sounds also add in a touch of doom metal.
All of the tracks sound very different from each other while also always sticking to an instrumental direction. Some of the songs are also very long and epic in length along with some noises also being added into certain sections of the recording as well as the music also having its dissonant and minimalist moments and as the album progresses a small amount of percussion can also be heard.
On this recording The Owl does mostly everything on piano along with a small amount of percussion and electronic by combining in ambient, drone, experimental, harsh noise and doom metal as well as keeping everything instrumental while the production also sounds very dark.
In my opinion this is another great sounding album from The Owl and if you are a fan of ambient, drone, experimental, noise and doom metal, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Dance Of The Moonlight Ghosts" and "Homeward Pilgrimage To Feedback Mountain". 8 out of 10.
