Vanessa Skantze is a solo artist from Seattle, Washington who is also a Butoh artist and teacher of yoga and dance and teams up with a variety of many different artists bringing in a mixture of harsh noise,, experimental, avant garde and dark ambient and the album w as released by Scry Recordings and called "Writhing Treasure Forest" and we will review each song individually.
Masaaki Masao brings us "Stone" which starts out with dark ambient style synths while the track is also over 21 minutes. Cinematic drones are also a very huge part of the track along with the music also having its repetitive moments before adding in some filed recordings and experimental elements. As the track progresses the music also starts incorporating more elements of harsh noise.
Erymanthe & Masaki Masao brings us "Sea" which starts out with some power electronics while the song is also over 17 minutes in length. Operatic female vocals can also be heard in some parts of the track along with the music also adding in a very powerful sounding bass guitar, when synths are utilized they also bring in elements of dark ambient. and after awhile clean playing can also be heard briefly.
Pink Void brings us "Wind" which starts out with some ambient style soundscapes while the track is also over 15 minutes in length. After awhile the music also starts adding in some experimental and avant garde elements along with some field recordings also being utilized as the track progresses as well as some electric sounds and demonic voices also being added into the background..
Greg Campbell & Sioux Pete brings us "Fire" which starts out with some ethnic style bells while the track is also over 16 minutes in length. At times the music also gets very experimental and avant garde sounding along with some tribal style drums also being added into the music and the acoustic guitars are also utilized in a different way, distorted guitar sounds can also be heard briefly.
Morher brings us "Serpent" which starts out with some dark ambient style synths and cinematic drones while the track is also over 15 minutes in length. When drums are added into the music they also give the song more of a tribal feeling and as the track progresses distorted soundscapes and melodic voices are also added into the track.
Noisepoetnobody & Uneasy Chairs brings us "Muck" which starts out with some avant garde soundscapes and guitar drones while there track is also over 16 minutes in length. Harsh noises and homemade instruments can also be heard at times and as the song progresses the music also starts getting more experimental.
Noisepoetnobody & Cailleach brings us "River" which starts out with some ambient style synths and cinematic drones while the track is also over 7 minutes in length. Stringed instruments can also be heard in some parts of the track and all of the music sticks to an instrumental direction.
In conclusion I feel this is a very great sounding compilation and I would recommend it to all fans of ambient, drone, avant garde, experimental, field recordings and noise.
