Beckahesten are a band from Sweden that plays a mixture of dark ambient, neo-folk and ritual and this is a review of their 2020 album "Vattenhalens Drapare" which will be released in November by Cyclic Law.
Stringed instruments start off the album while the synths also bring elements of dark ambient into the music. When whispers are utilized they also give the songs more of a ritualistic feeling along with some distorted soundscapes also being added into some parts of the music and percussions can also be heard in the background at times.
Stringed instruments are also added into some parts off the recording which also brings in elements of neo folk while one track also introduces melodic chants onto the music. All of the songs also sound very different from each other along with a couple of the tracks also being very long and epic in length.
As the album progresses a brief use of female vocals can also be heard, when drums are finally utilized they also enhance the tribal and ritualistic side of the recording along with one track also adding in a brief use of throat singing. The production sounds very dark while the lyrics are written in Swedish and cover poetic, ritualistic, ancient cultures and nature orientated themes.
In my opinion Beckahesten are a very great sounding mixture of dark ambient, neo-folk and ritual and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Ropet" and "Hotet". 8 out of 10.
