Hadewych are a band from the Netherlands that plays a mixture of black ambient, avant garde, experimental and ritual and this is a review of their 2020 album "Welving" which was released by Tartarus Records.
Ambient style synths start off the album along with some drum beats and avant garde elements a few seconds later. Spoken word parts can also be heard in some parts of the recording while blast beats and atmospheric sounds are also utilized at times as well as some high pitched black metal screams also being added into some parts of the album.
At times the music also gets very experimental sounding while also having its ritualistic moments. Some tracks also add in a small amount of throat singing which also gives the recording more of an ethnic vibe along with one track also introducing distorted bass guitars and tribal beats into the music.
Demonic sounding spoken word parts and psychedelic sounds are also added on one of the tracks. Home-built and prepared instruments can also be heard in certain sections of the recording as well as the electric guitar riffs enhancing the black metal side of the music when they are utilized.
Elements of industrial can also be heard at times as well as all of the tracks also sound very different from each other along with one track also being an instrumental and also introducing acoustic guitars onto the recording. The production sounds very dark while the lyrics cover gargantuan cosmic events and chthonic ritual celebrations.
In my opinion Hadewych are a very great sounding mixture of black ambient, avant garde, experimental, industrial and ritual and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Kho" "Nevelrium" "Kimaera" and "Minneroof". 8 out of 10.
