Gourd are a band from Ireland that plays a mixture of harsh noise, experimental, dark ambient and doom metal and this is a review of their 2020 album "The Emptied Wastes" which was released by Cursed Monk Records.
Harsh noise and power electronics start off the album while the music also gets very experimental sounding at times. When bass guitars are added onto the recording they bring in the heaviness of doom and sludge metal along with the grim screams also adding in a touch of black metal and most of the tracks are very long and epic in length.
When synths are utilized they bring elements of dark ambient into the songs while programmed beats can also be heard at times. Spoken word parts can also be heard in certain sections of the recording along with some voices also being added into some parts of the music as well as some tracks also adding in ritualistic soundscapes as well as each song also sounding very different from each other.
Gourd plays a musical style that takes harsh noise, experimental, dark ambient, ritual, doom and sludge metal and mixes them together to create a sound of their own. The production sounds very dark while the lyrics cover nightmares and death themes.
In my opinion Gourd are a very great sounding mixture of harsh noise, experimental, dark ambient, ritual, sludge and doom metal and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "The Emptied Wastes" and "A Lamentable Lot". 8 out of 10.
