Elan O'Neil is a solo artist from Illinois that plays dark ambient and this is a review of his 2012 album "Subterranean Cartography" which was released by Hypnotic Dirge Records.
The album starts out with dark ambient synths and experimental loops and then the music starts getting more atmospheric and as the album progresses oceanic sounds are added onto the record along with some programmed beats.
While every song is done on a synth they all sound different from each other and there is a variety of many different keys and atmospheres on this album as well as a great amount of drones and this is the perfect record to listen to during meditation and on the 8th song elements of dungeon synth are added along with a small amount of black metal screams and on the last song acoustic guitars are added into the music.
Lyrics are absent from this album with most of the musical being instrumental but the themes cover oceanic and metaphysical topics, while the production has a very strong, powerful and epic sound to it along with some of the songs being very long and epic in length.
In my opinion Elan O'Neal is a very decent sounding dark ambient artist and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Subterranean Cartography" "Even Cyan Hues Will Not Sink" "Lifespan Of A Celphalopod" and "Shadows Ensnare me". 7/5 out of 10.
