Evoken are a band from New Jersey that plays a mixture of funeral doom and death metal and this is a review of their 2018 album "Hypnagogia" which will be released in November by Profound Lore Records.
Atmospheric sounding keyboards start off the album which also mixes in with the heavier sections of the music while the slow riffs are very heavily rooted in funeral doom metal along with most of the tracks being very long and epic in length as well as most of t he vocals being death metal growls.
Dark sounding melodies can also be heard in some of the guitar riffing while stringed instruments can also be heard at times along with all of the musical instruments having a very powerful sound to them as well as some spoken word parts also being utilized at times, when screams are utilized they also add in a touch of black metal.
The guitar leads are done in a very melodic style and when the music speeds up a small amount of blast beats can be heard and as the album progresses a couple of instrumentals are added onto the recording while one track also introduces clean playing onto the recording along with some clean male and female vocals also being used briefly.
Evoken plays a style of funeral doom/death metal that is very slow, dark and heavy sounding, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics are a concept album based upon the horrors of World War I.
In my opinion Evoken are a very great sounding funeral doom/death metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "The Fear After" "Hypnagogia" and "The Weald Of Perished Men". 8/5 out of 10.
