Concrete Jesus/Repent Machine/Nailed Nazarene Industries/Yasamal Records/2020 EP Review

This  is  a  review  of  another  recording  from  Casper,  Wyoming's  Concrete  Jesus  which  shows  him  going  for  a  mixture  of  post  and  death  industrial  and  the  ep  was  released  in  2020  as  a  joint  effort  between  Nailed  Nazarene  Industries  and  Yasamal  Records  and  called  "Repent  Machine".

Dark  sounding  drones  start  off  the  ep  while  field  recordings  can  also  be  heard  briefly  while  the  programmed  beats  also  add  in  elements  of  post  industrial  and  underground  electronic  dance  music.  Spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  recording  and  all  of  the  tracks  also  sound  very  different  from  each  other.

At  times  the  music  also  adds  in  some  powerful  sounding  bass  while  one  track  also  starts  adding  in  some  harsh  noise,  power  electronics  and  death  industrial  elements  which  also  takes  the  music  into  more  of  a  dark  and  brutal  direction.

On  this  recording  Concrete  Jesus  starts  out  with  some  more  dance  orientated  post  industrial  before  evolving  into  a  more  harsh  death  industrial  direction  as  the  ep  progresses  and  the  production  also  sounds  very  dark.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Concrete  Industrial  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  post  and  death  industrial,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "II'  and  "VI".  8  out  of  10.

God Pussy Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?

Hi! My name is Jhones, I have been working with God Pussy since the end of 2008. Focusing on alerting the evils of society and the greed of the powerful and their tactics to exterminate minorities and those who bother them. God Pussy no nothing more than this, it is an awareness tool and spokesperson for the underprivileged.

2.You have also released a good amount of music since 2009, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical progress you have made over the years?

Since the beginning (late 2008 and early 2009), several experiments and tests were created, very important to shape and transform something more pure and dynamic as it is today, learning more and more to drive and configure countless forms of noise. I've gone through phases of collages of noises, recordings of fields (more crude and sounds of machinery).... Increasingly trying to improve and bring dissonance to the listener.

3.You also have a background in the anarcho punk and straightedge scene, how would you compare the harsh noise scene to those different genres?

I would not say experience of the scene, I am only listener and I have my conscience directed to the freedom of people, we have to be free, and avoid mass exploitation. Maybe that's why I identify with “anarchism”, about sXe, I identify with structure and “non-drugs”, but people are free to use any substance you want, we are in this life in passing, no rules said! Want to escape from reality, feel free.

Anarcopunk, Grindcore, RAP ... I listen since I was a child, created forms and concepts in my life. The best school of life is on the streets is survival, the sounds are a soundtrack that can alert you about people wanting to fuck you all the time. I hear from grindcore to root samba, going through rap that is the people's music. If the subject is to raise awareness and we direct the information that we do not learn in schools, it will be a pleasant sound... Away from all the musical concept that makes for fame and money. A big great fuck for commercial music!

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'God Pussy'?

God Pusy it means “God Pussy”, it's a noise project, not much to say, I let my albums speak for it.

5.You also put out a few releases, do you spend a great amount of your time writing and creating music?

I record everything at home (but I have a life too haha), whenever I can, I record the noise and keep it stored. When invitation to Split arises, I am available, so I have no way of controlling the number of releases in partnership ... More with my solo works, I release a maximum of six solo albums a year, I could release more, but I think six albums a year is great registration number.

Each album has a concept on a certain subject, so there will always be new albums, even if people live in their friendship cubicles, my work is registered and there are always limited physical copies, so this indicates that sometime there will be someone listening disc that I recorded.

6.What are some of the best shows that you have played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

I live the moment! always very spontaneous, I'm working on the noise! I do it for pleasure and a lot of love, I have no artistic performance is to connect the equipment and let it flow.

I can recommend you to listen "Never Mind - Here's The God Pussy _ 10 Years Of Harsh Noise" are excerpts from concerts between 2011 to 2018: https://godpussy.bandcamp.com/album/never-mind-heres-the-god-pussy-10-years-of-harsh-noise

I've been doing some shows, I still think the number of events I play is small, but I always have fun, even if the return home is sad and painful (I live away from big cities) ... I've already shared the stage with people I like a lot, so this is really cool!! I have much 'live' that like to hear / watch, a lot that I did is registered and can be watched here (https://godpussy.blogspot.com/p/live.html).

7.You have also been a part of a decent amount of splits over the years, can you tell us a little bit about about the musical projects you have worked with on these releases?

I've had countless releases of splits and compilations, always maintaining the connection of the noises. I have done a great number of release, I always kept active in relation to this subject. I will not mention names, as I said “countless split releases”, it would be unfair to mention 10 or 20 people / project, I prefer to leave the link and you can check the complete noisegraphy and you will know who was part. (https://godpussy.blogspot.com/p/discografia.html)

8.What are some of the record labels you have worked with over the years?

There have been countless launches, I have no contract or the right destination to launch, I am always open to maintain a good connection and make the noise reach people different from my friendship cycle. Direct the page of the discography listed above and you will discover everyone who did and is part of my work.

9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of harsh noise?

I have seen people who like my work, this is cool and rewarding, I see some good words of encouragement and that make me stay strong. Some people have made good comments about my titles, it makes me more confident not to take just noise, but also address issues that the powerful consider as disposable.

Keeping this flame lit between noise and information is necessary, we are in a bad time for everyone, so there is no reason to turn a blind eye to during that planetary destruction.

10.Where do you see yourself heading into as a musician during the future?

Nowhere!

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

the same as always, sometimes I know new things, but I am stuck with the sounds mentioned at the beginning of the interview.

12.Does Occultism play any role in your music?

Nothing!

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoufghts?

I have to thank you for the space and to everyone who came here, my sincere feelings and gratitude to those who made themselves available to read this content and to those who come across and appreciate my work. I am accomplished and keeping firm in what I started , I try to continue my journey and try to add noise and information through God Pussy!

A small request, look the "latin noise" there are a lot of good people making noises on these sides!

Peace to those who survive in this sick world... Try to evade evil, preserve and do good, always! always!

Hostile Surgery Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?

Hostile Surgery is a dark-ambient-industrial-noise project. It isn’t your pure harsh wall of noise, some reviews described it as being minimal noise and it is very close to what I’m working: a weird missing link between ambient and noise.

2.So far you have released 2 albums, musically how do they both differ from each other?

The first album ‘The Day Called X’ is almost narrative, with its apocalyptic mood and visuals. It’s heavy on drone and closer to an ambient soundtrack with a total absence of beat. It’s mostly about pacing and torturing existing sounds and field recordings. It sounds chaotic, but it’s a very concrete and mathematical approach to music.

On the new record, MIDNIGHT WOUNDS, the sound is dirtier, but there is a low ritualistic beat that pulses through each track that I expanded with instruments. It relies more on a sense of music than building a sound.

3.What are some of the concepts and images you bring out with your musical style?

I’m a film-junkie and an experimental video-maker with a taste for horror and apocalypse. I find a kind of solace in these kinds of stories. The first album was about a kind of apocalypse. I must say that working on the clips during the confinement was tough. On one side I had more time to work on it, on the other it induced anxiety with all that was (and still is) going around.

While working on MIDNIGHT WOUNDS needed to escape the heavy lengthy drones for something more paced, thus the shorter tracks and the word MIDNIGHT (opposed to the DAY) and it built around these almost mantra like rhythms laced in witchy sounds. An album to listen late at night close to a fire.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Hostile Surgery'?

My experimental film project is title Mondo Corretto and I was looking for a name that also held a weird association and a flavor that would find its place in the Dark-Industrial scene. Because of my way to work on sounds, I was mostly looking on medical terms, when I stepped on “Hostile Surgery” which instantly fitted.

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

For Hostile Surgery I start working on the music and the clips came afterwards. MIDNIGHT WOUNDS relying more on beats, I wanted to visualize it with these animated hypnotic sound waves. Of course, there is an obvious hint to that legendary cover of Joy Division’s Unknown pleasures.

6.With this project you record everything by yourself, are you open to working with other musicians or do you prefer to work solo?

Absolutely! It is even one of the main reasons I started Hostile Surgery.

The first three albums are more about setting a ground, but on the ABRASION, the 2nd track from MIDNIGHT WOUNDS, you already have that beautiful and frightening eerie laughter performed by the amazing Karla Schnikov that really sets the occult feel of the album. It’s short, but we are planning to work around that kind of sound and feel for an album.

There is a split in the works with one of my favorite noise artists EARTHFLESH. His sound is as harsh as it is refined.

7.Are you open to doing any live performances with this musical project?

Yes, but it’s still a stretch. I could easily be deejaying sample of my works, but the idea doesn’t satisfy me. I need to extend the performative aspects of my music before making that step.

8.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of industrial, noise and experimental?

It’s a beautiful community. I started making music because I couldn’t find the right soundtracks to my experimental films, when I was contacted by the Parisian label MURMURE INTEMPOREL, specialized in experimental music, for releasing an album. I hardly saw myself as a musician at that times, but the reception was way above all expectations.

And to be able to release MIDNIGHT WOUNDS with BASEMENT CORNER EMISSIONS just feels delirious. I’m a huge fan of that label and never thought to work with Ken Jamison, also the man behind CREPUSCULAR ENTITY and other amazing music projects.

9.Where do you see yourself heading into as a musician during the future?

Mostly being able to free all these albums that are already roaming in my head. It’s all about finding the right time to do that with the right people.

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

I grew up listening a lot to punk-rock and new-wave-goth with some Einstürzende Neubauten, Bauhaus, The Cure, Bad Brains, Black Flag, Godflesh, etc. but I love music and isn’t a style I don’t listen to, then there was that slap I felt when I stumbled on the first Naked City album, which combined my love for movie soundtracks, jazz and hardcore.

As a closer influence there would be Chu Ishikawa, Ben Frost, Puce Mary, Tim Hecker and Thomas Köner and these times I’m a lot into EARTHFLESH and I’m just tripping on The Greatest Generation by Miss Terra Bates.

11.Does Occultism play any role in your music?

Not directly. I’ve read a lot about it and it’s fascinating, but my music is more about the feel of the occult. It’s more about listening to the wolves howl at night than being one.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Thank you for the opportunity to make this interview and supporting Hostile Surgery on DarkUndergroundMusicZine, keep it strange and dark!

Metadevice Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what is going on with the musical project these days?

Right now I'm ready to start recording new material. I have some ideas I would like to experiment with and I'm aiming towards something a bit different from "Ubiquitarchia", which was released this August. Usually this initial phase of recordings is quite loose and improvised, where I tend to explore new solutions or simply do a more intuitive approach to my regular set-up and gear. There is of course some extra material that wasn't used on either "Ubiquitarchia" or "Studies for a Vortex" that will certainly be re-formulated. I'm also working with some collaborators, namely for the vocal parts, so this should grant these future tracks a different ambience and tone. If all goes well, early next year some new material should emerge.

2.Recently you have released a new album, musically how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

The new Metadevice album, entitled "Ubiquitarchia" is in my opinion a much colder and mechanical record. Most of the sounds come from synthesizers, highly processed loops and some digital sound sources. Also, I decided to reduce the vocal presence to a few samples, enhancing the idea of something more repetitive and less organic. This reduction of a "humanizing feeling" was an intentional move to reflect the main concept behind these recordings. It focuses on the idea of an ubiquitous regime, the sense that power is an abstract, without a face nor a centre and that it penetrates every single moment of our lives and at the same time that we are its collaborators. It refers to the time we live in, where we deliver ourselves to the instances of control in a process of fulfilment of our needs and desires.

3.You have put out a decent amount of material in the past year, do you spend a great amount of time writing and creating music?

After the end of Sektor 304 in late 2014 and my collaboration with Mécanosphère, I simply began to record just for the sake of it. Soon I gathered a lot of material. Some went for the drone/ambient project Iurta with J.A. (Wolfskin), but much remained kept away, just waiting for the right moment. Last year, the mindset to put the pieces together was finally there and Metadevice was born and much of this material was the skeleton of the first album "Studies for a Vortex".
I believe the conditions for such a productive 2020 were due to the confinement time. It was a basic strategy of coping with what was happening, of surviving media induced paranoia, of trying to make some sense of what was and is happening.

4.Your earlier music had some lyrics, can you tell us a little bit more about the lyrical topics and subjects you have explored with your music?

While the presence of lyrics and voice in my previous projects was quite large, in Metadevice it was for the moment something exclusive on the album "Studies for a Vortex". Conceptually, "Studies...." explores the idea of an upcoming storm, the imminence of disaster. It is somehow inspired by the current times we live in, always being on the edge of some turmoil or crisis but at the same time, living in a sort of senseless dream, the simulation. Some of the lyrics were adaptations of writings by Allen Ginsberg, Ezra Pound, Thomas Pynchon and James Elroy that appear on the records as oracular invocations of distress, oppression and tension, while my own words were very influenced by Jean Beaudrillard's "Simulacra and Simulation" as well as the vocal samples that populate the track "Hypernormalized".

In Sektor 304, for example, the lyrics were much more related to the idea of dystopia in a more "classic" approach: a scream which translated the anguish provoked by the neurotic and oppressive powers of the modern world, alienation, speed, production and capital. Usually the images underlying the lyrics were much more related to physical or graphical representations: the dysfunctional cyborg with it's flesh infected by the rusted metal edges.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Metadevice'?

It was something that has been going on in my mind for sometime. The term tries to illustrate something like a closed circuit, always turned inwards: a device operating or regulating other devices, towards the point of being totally autophagic or turned inward. It should be a representation for total power, whose function bears nothing but a lack of explicit sense or meaning. And this reflects some of the topics I tend to focus on this project.

6.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

The artworks of both "Studies..." and "Ubiquitarchia" were developed by me and are both formally and conceptually connected. Clouds, atmosphere, yet ominous, in turmoil, between the spectral and the material. It is both the aura and presence of power and disaster. Two elements that seem to be very present in our lives at the current time. The artwork is developed not just specifically for Metadevice, but it is also integrated in my whole body of work, as I work also as an illustrator and create my own graphic work and graphic novels or books.

7.With the exception of a couple of quest musicians you have recorded most of the music by yourself, are you open to working with other musicians or do you prefer to work solo?

Metadevice is my project, but, yes, I am always open to collaborations. I really enjoy working with other people, because it also represents a challenge to the usual methods. It means leaving the comfort zone and learning to cope with whatever comes. I remember quite well two past collaborations, in the Sektor 304 times, that were really interesting in the sense that put us in a hard spot, namely the collaboration Cd with Martin Bladh and the LP with Le Syndicat. These were cases where I felt the need to reconfigure my methods and the perspective I tend to have towards the final results.
At this moment, I'm working with the vocalist of a portuguese rock band named NU. Their sound can be described as rather repetitive and mechanical rock, incorporating electronic landscapes as well as saxophone and a very narrative and poetic vocal approach. Check their music here: https://nununuband.bandcamp.com/

8.You have put out a couple of releases on 'Malignant Records', are you happy with the support that they have given you so far?

My relationship with Malignant Records dates back to 2009 by the time Sektor 304 "Soul Cleansing" was released. Malignant ensures a good promotion, great level of quality on the releases and full support to the artists. What more can I wish?

9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of noise, industrial, ambient and drone?

I've had quite a positive reaction and I can only be happy with the fact that Metadevice simply doesn't fall into very specific niches when it comes to people who bought or appreciated both albums: it seems to go beyond musical genre barriers. Although I haven't performed live with this project and there are no plans for it at the moment, I do feel this is an important step to get to more people. I hope in a near future this will be possible in proper and dignifying ways. I tend to hate all these webcam live performances or restricted gigs and such.

10.What is going on with your other musical project these days?

Right now I'm collaborating in Sensor and it's something very different from Metadevice. It's much more of a proper band but with strong focus on improvisation. Our goal is not to create songs or narrative limitations, but rather develop some kind of dialogue between us in the most honest way. More than just doing noise rock or free jazz, Sensor is about action, reaction, cooperation and such. There is always a certain feeling of walking on the razor's edge, being on the brink of a certain disaster and knowing how to overcome it. Both failure and accomplishment are part of the business, as in life in general.
I also collaborate with J.A. (Wolfskin and Karnnos) on a project called Iurta. We have a second album on the works for a couple of years, after the release of "Notes Towards a Mental Breakdown" on Cyclic Law in 2017. This project tends a lot more ambient and dronish approach, but somehow this new material seems to be gaining a rather industrial vibe to it.
As for the other projects I was into, they seem to be dead and gone or otherwise in a state of dormancy. Honestly, right now, both Sensor and Metadevice are the ones that keep me motivated.

11.Where do you see yourself heading into as a musician during the future?

I don't see much of the future and in part it is my choice. I have, of course, some plans and ideas I would like to develop in next releases, but currently I'm not making any big expectations out of it. Right now I'm finishing my next graphic novel and perhaps early next year I'll start recording the new album for Metadevice. For now, that's about it, since the conditions we are presently living in do not allow me to make very precise plans.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Hum... lately it's Swans, Jarboe, John Hassel, Penderecki, early Skullflower, Nico, African Head Charge and Scott Walker. "Slaves No More" by Sutcliffe Jugend is a record I found myself playing repeatedly in the past few weeks, as well as the latest Grunt and Soundwalk collective & Patti Smith's "Killer Road". Stromstad's "New Devoted Human" and Wet Nurse "Thanatosis" are some of the best and unique industrial/power electronics records I've heard lately. Also digging out my shelves some Segerhuva CDs, which was quite a landmark label to me. I'm currently in a process of reducing stuff to my essentials, more and more. Cutting off what seems to be just regular, unenthusiastic replicas of a specific genre. Most music seems to fall into a simulation of something that has been done before. All is retro or immersed in nostalgia, reduced to kitsch or irony. I'm really more interested in people or projects who, even if they might fit into categories, try to have some voice, some personal discourse, to bring some fresh air. I would say that my biggest references, and those who made me start creating music were probably SPK and Test Dept, Einsturzende Neubauten and, because at the time I was way more connected to the extreme metal scene, the homonymous records by Thorns, Satyricon's "Rebel Extravaganza" and Dodheimsgard "666 International" were crucial. These three records really pushed black metal to the outer limits of the genre.

13.What are some of your non musical interests?

As I mentioned before, I'm very focused on visual arts. I spend as much time in music as I do drawing and painting. Doing visual narratives is something that means a lot to me. It is very hard to see myself without it, but as all praxis that is taken seriously, it is something that requires a great deal of effort and seriousness, often leading to frustration. But all this is part of the process and a step to get better and better. For me, to draw is truly self expression in a way I cannot find in any other medium or language.
Besides, I really enjoy gardening and farming. Working with plants requires a great deal of effort, but it is quite rewarding to see them grow, fulfilling their life cycle and all the transformations it implies. A day working in the garden with my wife is something that usually leads to a "positive" tiredness at the end of the day.

14.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Thanks for the interview and your support. If you are interested, make sure you follow Metadevice on bandcamp for news and other related issues regarding the project.
All the best!

God  Pussy  and  Nefastuz  team  up  together  to  create  a  very diverse  style of  harsh  noise  and  the  production  also  sounds  very  dark.

In  my  opinion  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  collaboration  from  God  Pussy  and  Nefastuz  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  harsh  noise,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Fracasso  II".  8  out  of  10.

Hostile Surgery/Midnight Wounds/Basement Corner Emissions/2020 Full Length Review

Hostile  Surgery  are  a  solo  project  from  Switzerland  that  plays  a  mixture  of  industrial  noise,  drone  and  ritual  music  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2020  album  "Midnight  Wounds'  which  will  be  released  on  September  14th  by Basement  Corner  Emissions.

Field  recordings  and  drones  start  off  the  album  while  synths  are  also  added  into  some  parts of  the  music.  A  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  the  songs  also  mixing  in  a  great  amount  of  noise  elements  and  all  of  the  tracks  are  also  instrumental  and  at  times  the  music  captures  a  ritualistic  atmosphere.

The  songs  also  add  in  a  good  amount  of  diversity  while  the  noises  also  get  very  harsh  sounding  at  times.  The  programmed  beats  also  add  touches  of  industrial  into  the  music  along  with  some  distorted  sounds  also  being  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording  as  well  as  all  of  the  tracks  also  sounding  very  different  from  each  other,  tortured  voices  can  also  be  heard  on  the  closing  song.

Hostile  Surgery  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  industrial  noise,  drone  and  ritual  music  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  his  own  as  well  as  keeping  everything  instrumental  and  the  production  also  sounds  very  dark.

In  my  opinion  Hostile  Surgery  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  industrial  noise,  drone  and  ritual  music  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  solo  project.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Torment"  "Puncture"  and  "Lamentation".  8  out  of  10.
