Convocation are a band from Finland that has had music reviewed before in this zine and plays an atmospheric form of funeral doom/death metal and this is a review of their 2020 album "Ashes Coalesce" which was released as a joint effort between Dawnbreed Records, Everlasting Spew and Sentient Ruin Laboratories.
Dark soundscapes start off the album along with some synth a few seconds later which also mixes in with the heavier sections of the songs. The slower riffs also bring in the heaviness of funeral doom metal while the vocals are mostly deep death metal growls and melodies are also added into some of the guitar riffing.
Screams are also added into some parts of the music while the solos and leads are also done in a very dark yet melodic style. At times the music also gets very atmospheric sounding along with all of the tracks being very long and epic in length as well as the music also evoking a very tragic sounding atmosphere.
A couple of tracks also introduces clear vocals and clean playing onto the recording along with all of the music also sticks to a slower direction as well as a brief use of female vocals, orchestra structures and organs can also be heard at times and all of the music also sticks to a slower direction and the album also closes with an instrumental. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover dark and depressive themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding album from Convocation and if you are a fan of atmospheric funeral doom/death metal, you should check out this recording. RRECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "The Absence Of Grief" and "Portal Closed". 8 out of 10.
