Phurpa are a music project from Russia that has had music reviewed before in this zine and they team up with Queen Elephantine on this recording a band originally from Hong Kong but now resides in the united States and they mix their 2 seperate musical styles which also takes the ritualistic, drone, experimental and avant garde and doom metal genres and mixes them them together and this is a review of their 2021 collaboration album "Ita Zor" which was released as a joint effort between Atypeek Music, 4iB and Misophonia Records.
An almost silent sound stats off the album before evolving into some ambient sounding drones while the throat singing and chants also gives the songs more of a ritualistic feeling. All of the tracks are also very long and epic in length along with some ceremonial bells also being added into the background.
Flutes can also be heard at times while the music also gets very experimental and avant garde sounding in some parts of the recording. When gongs are utilized they also enhance the occult atmosphere of the songs along with the tracks also getting very tribal, shamanistic and ethnic sounding throughout the recording.
The songs also mix in a good amount of Asian style instruments and psychedelic soundscapes along with some songs also adding in electronics and when guitars are utilized they also add in a touch of doom metal. The production sounds very dark while t he song themes revolve around Tibetan Bon Shamanism.
In my opinion this is a very great sounding collaboration between Phurpa and Queen Elephantine and if you are a fan of ritual, drone, experimental, avant garde and doom metal, you should check out this album. 8 out of 10.
