Guan Yin are a duo from the united States that plays a mixture of noise, ritual and black ambient and this is a review of his 2021 album "Evocations" which will be released in August by Trepanation Recordings.
Spoken word parts start off the album along with some atmospheric sounding drones a few seconds later while percussion can also be heard at times and also gives the music more of a ritualistic feeling. Elements of ambient are also utilized quite a bit throughout the recording and at times the music also captures the dark atmosphere of black metal.
Synths are also utilized quite a bit throughout the recording while ritualistic chants and ethnic style instruments are also added into some parts of the album. Most of the tracks are also very long and epic in length along with some touches of noise also being added on a great portion of the songs which also gives the music more of a chaotic atmosphere and each song also sounds very different from each other and as the album progresses a brief use of grim black metal screams can also be heard.
Guan Yin plays a musical style that t akes noise, ritual and black ambient and mixes them together to create a sound of their own. The production sounds very dark while the lyrics cover Mahayana Buddhism and the Lotus Stratas.
In my opinion Guan Yin are a very great sounding mixture of noise, ritual and black ambient and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this duo. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Evocation I" and "Evocation V". 8 out of 10.
