Musk Ox are a band from Canada that plays neo-folk and this is a review of their self released 2014 album "Woodfall".
Nature sounds start off the album before adding in some classical guitars that utilize both finger picking and full chords and a few seconds later cello's and violins become a part of the music and add in more classical and chamber elements into the bands musical style while the main focus is on a neo folk music sound.
Al of the 5 tracks are very long and epic in length and have a concept as a part of the album and you can hear elements progressive, post rock and metal being mixed into the violin's and cellos which makes the neo classical folk music direction of the band have a more original sound to them and all of the songs are instrumental with no vocals or lyrics being utilized on any of the tracks that are included on the album.
Musk Ox combines neo classical and neo folk together with their musical sound along with some post rock, progressive and metal elements which really makes their musical style stand out and the production sounds very dark and powerful for being a self released recording.
In my opinion Musk Ox are a very great sounding neo folk band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Arcanum" and "Senerade The Constellations". 8 out of 10.
