Nytt Land are a band from Russia that plays Nordic ritual folk music and this is a review of their 2015 album "Havamal" which was released by Crush The Desert Records.
Thunder and rain sounds start off the album along with some stringed instruments making their presence known a few seconds later which also gives the music a medieval feeling and a great portion of the tracks are very long and epic in length while melodic chanting can be heard in the music at times.
A lot of music brings in a shamanistic atmosphere and on the second track Slavic style instruments and tribal percussion's are added onto the recording which also gives the music more of a ritualistic feeling while some tracks also bring in elements of ambient and drone and there is also a great amount of female vocals present throughout the recording and later tracks also start utilizing more folk music elements while also bringing in flutes on some songs and they also add in a brief use of electronic music which also adds more originality onto the recording.
Nytt Land plays a musical style that takes a very dark and ritualistic form of music and mixes it in with Nordic folk music to create a style t hat is original, the production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics are based upon the ancient Edda's "Saemundar".
In my opinion Nytt Land are a very great sounding Nordic ritual folk music band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Opnun" "Frysta" "Veit-a hinn' and "RavnFjord". 8 out of 10.
