Somnambulist Red are a band from the United States that plays a mixture of soundtrack, ambient, experimental, post punk, drone, doom and thrash metal and this is a review of their 2016 album "Drowned In Phosphorence" which was released by Wraith Productions.
Field recordings along with some dark ambient soundscapes start off the album as well as adding programmed beats, clean playing and post punk style bass guitars onto the recording and you can also hear a touch of darkwave in the bands musical style which also gets very atmospheric and ethereal at times.
All of the tracks are very long and epic in length while also mixing in a soundtrack atmosphere and after awhile heavy yet melodic guitar riffing makes its presence known on the recording and also brings in a touch of both doom and thrash metal and there is also some clean playing also being utilized at times.
You can hear touches of post metal in some of the heavier sections of the songs while also being very melodic at times and some songs also bring in a small amount of spoken word samples and when tremolo picking is utilized it brings in a slight black metal influence and all of the tracks sound different from each other and there is also a brief use of saxophones which also gives the music more of an avant garde feeling while some of the solos and leads are done in a very melodic fashion and towards the end psychedelic sounds can be heard.
Somnambulist Red plays a musical style that takes the heaviness of thrash and doom metal and mixes it with post punk, experimental, ambient and drone to create a sound that is very original, the production sounds very professional while the song themes focus on darkness and sorrow.
In my opinion Somnambulist Red are a very great sounding mixture of soundtrack, ambient, experimental, post punk, drone, doom and thrash metal and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Ritual For leviathans, Wolves And Women" and "Drowning hex". 8 out of 10.
