Scalk Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?
Scalk is an abstract project, I like to keep it with endless interpretations. My goal is for the listener to make his own.
For me, it's something I do out of necessity, I don’t care if I get something back or if the result is “good” or “bad”. I like the feeling of ending the day and knowing that I've created something. I would say it is a ritual and a way of expressing myself.

2.How would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recordings?
Textures, soundscapes and a particular taste for dissonance. But I don’t mean to limit my sound in any way. It’s not supposed to have any creative boundaries.

3.So far all of your music has been instrumental, are you open to using any vocals in the future?
Maybe in a future release. I have no problem with vocals or any other instruments. If I ever decide to record and see that it fits, I don’t see why not. I just haven’t tried it yet or felt the need.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Scalk'?
Now, when I think in the word “Scalk”, I associate with all the work I have done in this project. It was not chosen because it had a meaning but rather to create one. The same goes for some of the names of songs and albums.
I like the idea of creating words from other words, it's almost like using samples in music. When I invent them they have a meaning, but over time I forget it and they end up with another.

5.With this project you record everything by yourself, are you open to working with other musicians?
Yes, of course. It's good to do things our own way, but sometimes I miss working with other musicians. It's always interesting to see the direction things take when you don’t do things all by yourself.

6.In less than a year you have put out 7 releases, do you spend a great amount of time writing and creating music?
Unfortunately not as much as I wanted. I would say that the trick is to work quickly, not fall into the trap of perfection and not to rethink things too much. I have found that doing things this way can be more productive and captures best what I want.

7.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interests?
So far I have had no contact with labels. There are some that I follow and admire. Of course I would be happy to see some of my future work in their catalogs.

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of ambient, drone, and noise?
Honestly I have no idea how people see this project. I don’t really like social networks and personally I don’t know anyone who listen to this kind of music, so it's hard to get feedback. It is gratifying to know that someone hears your music, but I have to admit that I don’t go out much of my world to find out.

9.Are you also involved with any other musical projects?
Not currently. However I've made part of some bands where I played guitar, bass and some machines like synths, samplers, etc. I kind of miss those days.

10.Where do you see yourself heading into as a musician in the future?
I know this is not a style with a lot of reception, so I like to have low expectations. I will continue to record and publish some stuff. I'd like to try doing some live performances and maybe try to release something with a label.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
I grew up listening to rock, metal and punk bands, but I never got caught up in a music style. I’m always finding new music. It turns out that listening to albums that have elements of styles that are stranger to me, causes me to start searching for those type of sounds, and I find myself in a new world. This is how I got to more extreme music such as noise, ambient, black metal, etc.
Some stuff I hear today: the catalog of Lurkerbias and Grey Matter Productions, Mutter, Abkehr, The Body, LEICHEN, Skáphe, Wiegedood…

12.What are some of your non musical interests?
I like to read, watch movies, documentaries and some series. I always sucked at school, but these days it pleases me more and more to learn new things. Lately I’m a lot into philosophy/religion and some politics.
13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
I just wanted to say thanks for the interest and for the blog(s). Much of the music I listen to I discover on sites like "DarkUndergroundMusicZine". It's important to have places like this.

Field  recordings  and  drones  start  off  the  album  along  with  a  more  minimal  industrial  style  after  awhile  soundscapes  and  elements  of  harsh noise  are  added  onto  the  recording  and  you  can  also  hear  some  brutality  that would  almost  fit  on  an  underground  metal  or  grindcore  release  at  times  and  the  songs  also  utilize  a  great  amount  of  power  electronics  and  on  a  couple  of  tracks  spoken  word  parts  are  utilized.

This  is  a  review  of  another  recording  from  Scalk  which  is  also  in  the  mixture  of  experimental,  ambient,  drone  and  noise  mixture  and  the  ep  was  self  released  in  2017 and  called "Quanta".

Field  recordings  along  with  some  soundscapes  start  off  the  ep  and  after  awhile  distorted  drones  are  added  onto  the  recording  along  with  both  of  the  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  after  awhile  elements  of  experimental  and  ambient  are  added  into  the  music  while  also  keeping  everything  instrumental.

Scalk  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to  his  instrumental  mixture  of  experimental,  ambient,  drone  and  noise  from  his  previous  release  and  the  production  sounds  very  dark.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Scalk  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  experimental,  ambient,  drone  and  noise,  you  should  check  out  this ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Ex  Nihilo,  Nihil  Fit".  8  out  of  10.

Atmospheric  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  drones  a  few  seconds  later while  all  of  the  tracks  are  instrumental  and  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  after  awhile  elements  of  ambient  are added  onto  the  recording  and  as  the  album  progresses  elements  of  noise  are  added into  the  music  and  at  times  the  music  gets very  avant  garde  and  experimental  sounding  and  stringed  instruments  can  also  be  heard  briefly  ona  couple  of  tracks which  also  gives  the  music  more  diversity.

Bottomed  are  a solo  project  from  Chicago,  Illinois  that  plays  a  mixture  of  drone,  electronic,  death  industrial  and  harsh  noise  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2016  album  "Separation/Anxiety"  which  was  released  by  Out-Of-Body  Records.

Programmed  beats  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  elements  of  industrial  and  electronic music  and  after  awhile  power  electronics  and  harsh noise  traces  start  to  make  their  presence  known  and  both  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  the  music  also  gets  very  avant  garde  and  experimental  at  times.

A  great  amount  of  drones  can  be  heard  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  while  also  mixing  in  the  brutality  of  death  industrial  along  with  some  soundscapes  also  being  utilized  at  times  and  at  times  the  music  adds  in  tribal  elements  as  well  as  making  both  of  the  songs  sound  different from  each  other  and  on  the  second  track  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly.

Bottomed  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  electronic  music,  drone,  death  industrial  and  harsh  noise  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  something  very  original  and  the  production  sounds  very  dark.

Devth of The Sunn/Ritam Von Opasni/2017 Split Album Review

This  is  a  review  of  a  collaboration  split  between  Brazil's  Devth  Of  The  Sunn  and  Croatia's  Ritam  Von  Opasni  which  is  in  the  mixture  of  drone, dark  ambient  and  blackened  noise  direction  and  was  also  self  released  in  2017.

Distorted  sounding  drones  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  touches  of  power  electronics  and  harsh  noise  and  after  awhile  elements  of  black  metal  start  to  make  their  presence  known  along  with  some  spoken  word  parts  also  being  utilized  at  times  and  all  of t he  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

At  times  the  music  gets  very  ritualistic  along  with  some  experimental  and  avant  garde  elements  while  guitar  amp noises  and  riffs  that  also  gives  the  songs  a touch  of  sludge  and  doom  metal  and  black  metal  screams  are  also  used  at  times  and  on  one  track  they  borrow  some  lyrics  from  Mayhem's  "Cursed  In  Eternity"  and  they  also  keep  everything  in  a  slwo  direction.

On  this  recording  Devth  Of  The  Sunn  and  Ritam  Von  Opasni  team  up  and  create  a  recording  that  mixes  drone,  dark  ambient,  harsh  noise  along  with  elements  of  black  and  doom  metal  to  create  a  very  dark,  heavy  and  ritualistic  recording  while  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw.

In  my  opinion  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  collaboration  between  Devth  Of  The  Sunn  and  Ritam  Von  Opasmi  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  drone,  dark  ambient,  harsh  noise,  ritual,  black  and  doom  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "D.C"  and  "L.M.I.D".  8  out  of  10.

Jupiterian/Terraforming/Transcending Obscurity Records/2017 CD Review

Brazil's  Jupiterian  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  that  continues  the  sludge,  funeral  doom  and  death  metal  mixture  of  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017  album  "Terraforming"  which  will  be  released  in  November  by  Transcending  Obscurity  Records.

Field  recordings  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  powerful sounding  bass  guitars  a  few  seconds  later  which  also  leads  up  to  a  heavier  musical  direction  while  the  vocals  are  a  mixture  of  growls  and  screams  and  a  touch  of  black  metal  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording.

Most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and epic  in  length  while  elements  of  drone  and  ambient  are  also  used  at  times  along  with  the  slow  riffing  also  bringing  in  the  heaviness  of  sludge  and  funeral  doom  metal  and  when  guitar  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in a  very  melodic  fashion  and  one  track  also  brings  in  session  work  from  Maurice  De  Jong  of  Grnaw  Their  Tongues  and  he  gives  the  music  more  of  an  experimental  and  avant  garde  vibe  while  all  of  the  songs  stick  to  a  mostly a  slow  musical  direction  and  clean  playing  along  with  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  briefly.

Jupiterian  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to their  mixture  of  sludge,  funeral  doom  and  death  metal  of  previous  releases  while  also  getting  more  experimental  this  time  around,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Mythology,  Cosmos,  Occultism,  Lovecraft,  Horror  and  Science  Fiction  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great sounding  recording  from  Jupiterian  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  sludge,  funeral  doom  and  death  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Unearthly  Glow"  and "Sol".  8  out of  10.
