Clawing are a duo with members from Alabama and Tennessee that has had music reviewed before in this zine and plays a mixture of dark ambient, drone and noise and this is a review of their 2020 album "Black" which will be released in November by Trepanation Recordings.
Field recordings and spoken word parts start off the album along with some harsh noises and power electronics a few seconds later. Ambient soundscapes are also a very huge part of the recording along with all of the tracks also being very long and epic in length and the music also gets very avant garde and experimental at times.
Drones can also be heard in some parts of the recording while synths can also be heard in certain sections of the music. All of the tracks sound very different from each other along with some static orientated noises also being used briefly as well as one of the songs also introducing programmed beats onto the album.
On this recording Clawing takes noise, experimental, drone and dark ambient and mixes them together to create a very haunting sounding recording. The production sounds very dark while the lyrics cover isolation themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Clawing and if you are a fan of harsh noise, dark ambient, drone and experimental, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "So Soft" and "Quinta del Sordo". 8 out of 10.
