Shadow Of The Torturer are a band with members from both Washington and Oregon that plays a mixture of doom, sludge, death metal and drone and this is a review of their 2014 album "Dronestown" which was released by Memento Mori.
A very dark sound along with some grim vocals that bring a black metal feeling to the recording while also utilizing spoken word parts starts off the album along with some powerful sounding bass guitars and ambient drone style synths which leads up to a very heavy and melodic doom metal sound.
All of the musical instruments on the recording have a very powerful sound to them along with all 3 of the tracks being very long and epic in length and after awhile the vocals get more deeper and it gives the bands musical sound more of a death metal feeling and on the second track spoken word samples are brought into the album along with the drones getting more powerful which also leads to the music getting heavier again as well as mixing the spoken words with aggressive screams and demonic growls.
The last track starts off with some clean playing and evil background sounds before making a return back to a heavier sound, all 3 of the tracks stick to a very heavy and slow sound from beginning to the end of the recording and they also prove you can still be very heavy without the use of fast playing and blast beats.
Shadow Of The Torturer create a very slow, dark and heavy sound with their music along with an evil atmosphere and this is one of the heaviest doom metal bands I have ever heard, the production sounds very dark, heavy and powerful while the lyrics cover the Jim Jones Massacre.
In my opinion Shadow Of The Torturer are a very great sounding mixture of doom, death metal, sludge and drone and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACK "Afterlife Cities". 8/5 out of 10.
