Magnolia are a band from Portugal that plays neo folk and this is a review of their 2019 album "Cynthia" which was released by Fat Sound Productions.
Stringed instruments and classical guitars start off the album along with some nature sounds in the background. When spoken word parts are utilized they also give the songs more of a ritualistic feeling while powerful sounding bass guitars can also be heard at times and the vocals are done in a clean style.
Some of the tracks are very long and epic in length while whispered vocals are also utilized in some parts of the recording. When synths are utilized they add in touches of ambient as well as having their atmospheric moments along with all of the tracks also sounding very different from each other.
As the album progresses touches of post metal can also be heard along with some tracks also add in some acoustic guitars and drums and a later song also uses percussion's which also gives the music more of a tribal, ritualistic and shamanistic atmosphere as well as the vocals also adding in a touch of black metal, Gregorian chants and spoken word parts can also be heard briefly. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics are written in Portuguese and cover romance, death, fado, emotions and darkness themes.
In my opinion Magnolia are a very great sounding neo-folk band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Magnolia" "Abismo" "Penedo da Saudade" and "Almas Perdidas". 8 out of 10.
