Germany's Miel Noir have returned with a new recording which continues their mixture of gothic rock, apocalyptic wave, dark ambient, neo-classical and industrial and this is a review of their 2019 album "The Phoenix Swarm" which was released as a joint effort between Aorta and Folkworld and also consists of their 2019 ep "Fiery Wings" as a bonus disc.
Electro-industrial sounds and programmed beats start off the album along with some hard guitar riffs and clean goth vocals a few seconds later. When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very melodic style as well as all of the musical instruments on the recording also having a very powerful sound to them.
The riffs also add in a decent amount of melody while the synths also add in some elements of dark ambient. One track also introduces spoken word parts onto the recording along with some elements of neo-folk also being added on some of the later songs and throughout the recording you can also hear touches of darkwave.
When pianos are utilized they also add elements of neo-classical onto the recording as well as some tracks also capturing an apocalyptic atmosphere, stringed instruments can also be heard in certain sections of the album, aggressive vocals can also be heard briefly on a few songs and a later track also adds n touches of Indian music.
At times the music also gets very ritualistic sounding along with some of the riffing also adding in some influences of metal and post punk and the songs on the ep also show more of a minimalist approach. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics are written in a mixture of English and German cover occultism, poetic, mythological and philosophical themes.
In my opinion both the full length and ep are very great recordings fro Miel Noir which also show a great amount of variety and if you are a fan of gothic rock, apocalyptic wave, dark ambient, neo-classical and industrial, you should check out this double album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Mother Kali (For Swarm)" "Empty Earth" "Elevation" and "Intolerance". 8 out of 10.
