Apostate Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording of the new album?

Hi, thank you for your interest! We are writing new songs and preparing for a European tour in support of the new album.


2.You have a new album coming out this year, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording and also how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

We've tried to create a more diversified music using elements from different subgenres, but first of all we have endeavored to create a special atmosphere to convey the overwhelming feelings that we had inside.


3.This is the first release in 5 years, can you tell us a little bit more about the gap between recordings?

Actually, the gap between recordings is 3.5 years. The previous album was released in November 2010, and we finished recording and mixing this new album in June 2014, but we spent some time looking for a publisher. In May 2012 there were left only two of us, and we were seeking new members for about a year. So we started working on new material only in 2013. Although in the old line-up we recorded 25-minute mini-album, which had never been officially released.


4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subject the band explores with the newer music?

It's mostly about dealing with some negative emotions, personality's inner struggles. Some also contain the not-so-positive views and reflections on the outer world.


5.The band was broken up for a few years, what was the cause of the split and also the decision to reform?

There were a lot of reasons of the split-up, but the main one was the differences between musicians' views on the band's future. Why I decided to gather a band again, that was because I really wanted to play this particular genre of music.


6.The band was originally called Black Moon Frankness, what was the decision behind the name change and also the meaning and inspiration behind the name Apostate?

Everyone can have their own interpretation of the name, we don't want to limit its meaning borders for anyone. About the name change, we have always been Apostate, and BMF was only a short and unsuccessful experiment.



7.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

We had many good shows, but the favorite ones are the tour with Therion across the Baltic States. Our show is first of all an attempt to express the atmosphere of our music.


8.Do you have any touring or show plans once the new album is released?

We have plans to make a European tour hopefully in May-June to promote the album. Also we would like to play at a few festivals. But these are only plans at the moment.


9.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

With our newer stuff we are trying to bring more atmosphere into music and at the same time make it more heavy. We are also trying to make a bit different approach to song structures.


10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Our influences are mainly slow and atmospheric music, but there are also a number of great black or post-black metal bands who make very atmospheric and emotional music that we really like.

Apostate/Time Of Terror/Ferum Records 2015 CD Review

  Apostate  are  a  band  from  Ukraine  that  plays  a  mixture  of  death  and  doom  metal  with  a  touch  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2015  album  "Time  Of  Terror"  which  will  be  released  in  March  by  Ferrum  Records.

  Horror  movie  samples  starts  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  slow  and  heavy  doom  metal  direction  along  with  some  death  metal  growls  and  screams  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  the  band  bringing  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  into  their  musical  style  and  a  good  portion  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  Spoken  word  parts  can  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  some  of  the  high  pitched  screams  add  a  black  metal  feeling  some  of  the  tracks  as  well  as  adding  the  influence  into  the  faster  sections  of  their  music  along  with a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  and  some  of  the  alter  tracks  show  clean  playing  and  acoustic  guitars  being  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording.

   On  some  of  the  tracks  the  band  brings  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  when  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  bring  in  even  more  of  a  melodic  doom/death  metal  sound  to  the  recording  and  a  good  portion  of  the  music  sound s like  it  could  off  been  recorded  in  the  90's  while  the  black  metal  influence  gives  the  album  more  of  a  modern  feeling.

  Apostate  plays  a  style  of  death/doom  metal  that  is  very  melodic  and  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's  but  take  it  in  a  heavier  direction  and  also  avoids  any  melodic  vocals  and  keyboards  and  also  brings  in  a  touch  of  black  metal  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Sorrow,  Darkness,  and  Loneliness.

  In  my  opinion  Apostate  are  a  very  great  sounding  melodic  death/doom  metal  band  with  a  blackened  edge  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Pale  Reflection"  and  "Memory  Eclipse".  8  out  of  10.
