1. A couple years ago while listening to Tyranny’s “Aeons In Tectonic Interment” as well as Indian’s “From All Purity” & my usual copious amounts of Neurosis, Black Metal & doom, I wrote what would become the main riff for Ordeals in Stillness. I recorded it into my shitty GarageBand program & sent it to my buddies Logan & Josh, knowing they were musically like minded. I suggested we form a doom project, something I’d wanted to do for years. Logan responded that he’d always wanted to try doing drums and vocals for such a project, to which I replied “fuck yes”. Josh was on board with handling bass. With this 3 piece as a definite possibility, I immediately began writing what would become “Constellation Vows”. Boghaunter was born.
2.How would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the ep?
2. Sonically I would describe the EP as a mix of Neurosis, funeral doom & black metal.
3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?
3. The lyrics deal with loss, learning to come to grips with some of life’s harsh realities, the duality of light & darkness, suffering & enlightenment.
4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Boghaunter'?
4. As esoteric & mysterious as the name Boghaunter may sound, it is in fact the name of a rare type of dragonfly found in Maine. I came across this name while hiking up there a couple years ago & immediately knew it would be a fitting name for a potential band. I find the name inspirational as well, as I am inspired by the natural world greatly!
5.Recently ' Terry Savastano' of Grief/Come To Grief' gave your music a good review, do you feel honored to be recognized by one of the legendary doom or sludge metal musicians of the last 2 decades?
5. To have a guy of Terry’s caliber & pedigree within the doom/sludge world recognize & praise our music to any degree is an absolute honor & something we don’t take for granted.
6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?
6. Well we’ve only played a total of 6 shows so far. Shows are something we don’t aggressively seek out at this point, but if an opportunity presents itself or we are invited on to a bill, we will happily accept. Our most memorable show thus far was probably sharing a bill with Come to Grief & Conclave, & we’ve had a blast sharing the stage with our friends in Magnatar a few times, as well as Dim, Glacier, among others.
7.Do you have an touring or show plans for the future?
7. We have no current plans for touring. We’re all fairly busy guys with jobs, families, etc, but if an opportunity presented itself we would definitely consider it. Probably on a small scale though!
We have a few shows currently booked in NH, VT, & MA throughout the year. We are psyched to be a part of Stoned To Death 3 in Brattleboro, VT next month (May 26th), headlined by none other than Come to Grief & Black Pyramid, among many others.
8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of doom metal?
8. Well, we haven’t quite reached the level of “worldwide feedback” yet! If anyone who is a fan of this type of music takes the time to listen, & enjoys it on some level, we are grateful & thankful.
9.When can we expect a full length and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
9. We are hoping to record a full length later this year & release it in 2019 if all goes well. We have nearly enough new material at the moment to do so. Musically the new songs are maintaining the sound evidenced on the EP. A balance of light & dark, crushing & seren
10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
10. As far as influences go, everything from Black Sabbath (1st 6 albums), to Neurosis (especially Times of Grace) to the entire early Southern Lord catalog (Burning Witch, Goatsnake etc), funeral doom like Mournful Congregation, Tyranny....seminal sludge bands like Grief, Eyehategod, as well as genre-blending bands like Unearthly Trance.
Nowadays I listen to tons of underground music constantly. I think Fenriz said once he listens to 10 albums a day. I’m pretty close to that. My current obsession is a band from Germany called Ultha. Highly recommended. Black metal meets doom. Epic & crushing music!
Also loving Hamferd’s “Támsins Likam”, Nahtrunar’s “Mysterium Tremendum”, Drudkh’s “They Often See Dreams About the Spring” & the new Mournful Congregation.
11.What are some of your non musical interests?
11. Listening to, playing, writing music & going to shows honestly takes up most of my leisure time, but besides that I love the outdoors of my home state of New Hampshire. Hiking the mountains, going to the ocean.
