Malfet/The Glimmering/Pacific Threnodies/2020 EP Review

 

  This  is  a  review  of  another  recording  from  California's  Malfet  which  shows  the  music  going  for  more  of  a  pastoral  style  of  dungeon  synth  and  the  ep  was  released  in  2020  by  Pacific  Threnodies  and  called  "The  Glimmering".

  Nature  sounds  start  off  the  ep  along  with  some  dungeon  synth  style  songs  which  also  use  a  variety  of  many  different  sounding  keys.  At  times  the  music  also  ads  in  some  medieval  touches  while  also  capturing  the  atmosphere  of  a  fantasy  movie  soundtrack  along  with  percussion's  also  being  added  into  some  parts  of  the  recording.

  All  of  the  music  also  sticks  to an  instrumental  direction  while  the  second  track  also  sounds  very  different  from  the  first  song  which  also  gives  the  music  more  diversity  along  with  the  music  also  adding  in  a  touch  of  new  age  at  times.

  Malfet  creates  2  very  melodic  and  diverse  sounding  dungeon  synth  tracks  with  this  ep  as  well  as  keeping  everything  instrumental  while  the  production  sounds  very  dark.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Malfet  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  dungeon  synth,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Dim  Arbours".  8  out of  10.

Malfet/Alban Arthan/Pacific Threnodies/2020 CD Review

 

  California's  Malfet  has returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  mixture  of  dungeon  synth  and  medieval  fantasy  ambient  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2020  album  "Alban  Arthan"  which  was  released  by  Pacific  Threnodies.

  Dungeon  synth style  synths  start  off  the  album  as  well  as  using  a  variety  of  many  different  sounding  keys  while  programmed  beats  can  also  be  heard  at  times.  The  music  also  captures  a  medieval  atmosphere  along  with  the  songs  sounding  like  they  could  easily  fit  on  a  fantasy  soundtrack  and  a  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  The  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  ambient  elements  while  most  of  the  tracks  also  stick  to  an  instrumental  direction.  Nature,  rain,  thunder  and  water  sounds  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording   along  with  a  few  songs  also  introducing  spoken  word  parts  onto  the  album  as  well  as  each song  also  sounding  very different  from  each  other.  and  as  the  recording  progresses  touches  of  folk  music  can  also  be  heard.

  On  this  recording  Malfet  takes  the  dungeon  synth  style  of  his  previous  releases  and  mixes  it  with  medieval  fantast  ambient  to  take  his  sound  to  another  level.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  song  themes  focus  on  the  Oak  King  as  well  as  taking  some  inspirations  from  druidic  paganism  and  the  Arthurian  legends,

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Malfet  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  dungeon  synth  and  medieval  fantasy  ambient,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Penumbral  Grove"  "On  The  Tree  That  No  One  May  Ever  Know"  "The  Sadness  Of  Her  Might"  and  "Naught  But  Wom-Out  Joy".  8  out  of  10.

Malfet/The Way To Avalon/Pacific Threnoodies/2019 CD Review

  Malfet  is  a  solo  artist  from  Northern  California  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  rhythmic  form  of  dungeon  synth  and  this  is  a  review  oh  his  2019  album  "The  Way  To  Avalon"  which  will  be  released  in  July  by  Pacific  Threnodies.

  Field  recordings  start  off  the  album  before  adding  some  synths  onto  the  recording  which  also  brings  in  elements  of  dark  ambient  and  dungeon  synth.  The  synths  also  bring  in  a  variety  of  many  different  sounding  keys  as  well  as  taking  the  music  into  more  of  an  atmospheric  direction  at  times.

  Programmed  beats  can  also  be  heard  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  while  elements  of  folk  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  music  and  at  times  the  music  also  captures  the  atmosphere  of  a  fantasy  movie  or  television  show  soundtrack.  Nature  sounds  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  some  tracks  also  show  an  influence  of  classical  music  and  spoken  word  parts  are  added  onto  the  closing  track.

  On  this  recording  Malfet  remains  true  to  the  rhythmic  style  of  dungeon  synth  from  his  previous  release  as  well  as  also  keeping  most  of  the  music  instrumental.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  song  themes  focus  on  Arthurian  Legends  along  with  some  inspirations  from  the  Marion  Zimmler  Bradley  Avalon  novels.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Malfet  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  dungeon  synth,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Within  Llyn  Ogwen"  "Tintagel's  Brume"  and  "Briosque  Juvenis".  8  out  of  10.

Malfet/The Snaking Path/Pacific Threnodies/2018 Cassette Review

  Malfet  are  a  solo  project  from  California  that  plays  a  rhythmic  form  of  dungeon  synth  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  album  "The  Snaking  Path"  which  will  be released  on  cassette  on  march  30th  by  Pacific  Threnodies.

  Nature  sounds  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  ritualistic  yet  tribal  drumming  a  few  seconds  later  while  the  synths  take  the  music  more  into  a  dark  ambient  and  dungeon  synth  direction  as  well  as  some  touches  of  folk  and  neo-classical  and  most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic in  length.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear a   variety  of  many  different  sounding  keys  along  with  a  great  amount  of  programmed  beats  while  all  of  the  songs  stick  to  an  instrumental direction  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  mellotron,  harps  and  flutes.

  Malfet  plays  a  style  of  dungeon  synth  that  is  more  rhythmic  than  most  bands  or  artists  that  play  this  style,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  song  themes  focus  darkness  and  nature.

  In  my  opinion  Malfet  are  a  very  great  sounding  rhythmic  dungeon  synth  solos  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  cassette.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Edenic  Reflections"  and  "Approaching  Daylight".  8  out  of  10.
