Jupiterian/Protosapien/Transcending Obscurity Records/2020 CD Review

  Brazil's  Jupiterian  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  an  atmospheric  mixture  of  funeral  doom/death  and  sludge  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2020  album  "Protosapien"  which  was  released  by  Transcending  Obscurity  Records.

 Atmospheric  soundscapes  and  synths  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  style.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  the  slower  riffing  also  adding  in  elements  of  funeral  doom  metal.

  Vocals  are  mostly  deep  death  metal  growls  while  the  screams  also  add  in  touches  of  black  metal.  The  music  also  brings  in  the  heaviness  of  sludge  metal  along  with  some  spoken  word  parts  also  being  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  whispered  vocals  can  also  be  heard  briefly.

  The  music  also  has  its  atmospheric  moments  along  with  some  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  Dark  sounding  melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  as  well  as  a  brief  use  of  blast  beats  when  the  music  finally  speeds  up  and  most  of  the  music  sticks  to  either  a  slow  or  mid  tempo  direction.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Occultism,  Mythology,  Cosmos,  Science  Fiction,  Horror  and  the  writings  of  H.P  Lov3ecraft.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Jupiterian  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  funeral  doom/death  and  sludge  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Mere  Humans"  and  "Earthling  Bloodline".  8  out  of  10.

Jupiterian/Terraforming/Transcending Obscurity Records/2017 CD Review

  Brazil's  Jupiterian  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  that  continues  the  sludge,  funeral  doom  and  death  metal  mixture  of  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017  album  "Terraforming"  which  will  be  released  in  November  by  Transcending  Obscurity  Records.

  Field  recordings  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  powerful sounding  bass  guitars  a  few  seconds  later  which  also  leads  up  to  a  heavier  musical  direction  while  the  vocals  are  a  mixture  of  growls  and  screams  and  a  touch  of  black  metal  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording.

  Most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and epic  in  length  while  elements  of  drone  and  ambient  are  also  used  at  times  along  with  the  slow  riffing  also  bringing  in  the  heaviness  of  sludge  and  funeral  doom  metal  and  when  guitar  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in a  very  melodic  fashion  and  one  track  also  brings  in  session  work  from  Maurice  De  Jong  of  Grnaw  Their  Tongues  and  he  gives  the  music  more  of  an  experimental  and  avant  garde  vibe  while  all  of  the  songs  stick  to  a  mostly a  slow  musical  direction  and  clean  playing  along  with  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  briefly.

  Jupiterian  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to their  mixture  of  sludge,  funeral  doom  and  death  metal  of  previous  releases  while  also  getting  more  experimental  this  time  around,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Mythology,  Cosmos,  Occultism,  Lovecraft,  Horror  and  Science  Fiction  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great sounding  recording  from  Jupiterian  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  sludge,  funeral  doom  and  death  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Unearthly  Glow"  and "Sol".  8  out of  10.

Jupiterian/Aphotic/Caligari Records/2015 Cassette Review

  Jupiterian  are  a band from  Brazil  that has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  mixture  of funeral  doom,  death  metal  and  sludge and  this is  a  review  of  their 2015  cassette  "Aphotic"  which  was  released  by  Caligari  Records.

  A  very  powerful  bass  guitar  sound  starts  o0ff  the  album  bringing  elements  of  doom  metal  onto  the  recording  and  the  rhythms  also  bring  a  heavy  sludge  influence  to  the  recording  and you  can  also  hear  depressive  sounding  melodies  at  times  and  after  a  couple of  minutes  death  metal  growls  start  becoming  a  huge  part  of  the  tracks.

  Most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  a  lot of  the  riffs  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  both  funeral  and  early 90's  doom/death  metal  influences  and  when  high  pitched  screams  are  utilized  they  are  almost  in  a  black  metal  direction  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  very  dark  and  melodic  and  some tracks also  bring  in a  small  amount  of  spoken  word  samples  and  the  whole  album  sticks  to  a  very  slow  yet  heavy  musical  direction  from beginning  to  ending  of  the  recording.

  Jupiterian  create  an  album  that  is  mostly  rooted  in  a  90's  style  of  doom/death  metal  while  also  still  havng  some  of  the  funeral  doom  and  sludge  elements  of  the  previous  recording,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  Mythology,  Cosmos,  Occultism,  Lovecraft,  Horror  and  Science  Fiction  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Jupiterian  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  funeral  doom/death  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  cassette.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Daylight"  and  "Drag  Me  To  My  Grave".  8  out  of  10.

Jupiterian Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

The band started back in mid-2013 under the name Codex Ivpiter with a slight different formation. We used to have a lead singer, but we decided that keeping the band smaller would fit better our music. We were a side project since i was busy with my other band. After this band split-up, we thought it was time to take Jupiterian seriously, so we changed the name to something that would fit better our lyrical theme and then we set it all to finish the EP in June/July 2014.

2.Recently you have released an ep, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording?

Well, it´s doom, basically. It´s slow as the first wave of death/doom bands such as Winter, melodic as Paradise Lost, filthy as Eyehategod and heavy as St. Vitus. We were looking for something that could mix it up.

3.Your lyrics cover some Mythology, Occult and Lovecraft themes, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in these topics?

These are themes surrounding me since i was a kid. I grew up reading Lovecraft, Tolkien, horror and sci-fi comics, Aleister Crowley, watching horror movies and all that stuff. I always try to bring up these fantastic worlds and thoughts to something that i could create. I feel i´m much more part of their worlds than this world itself. So with the band it´s my chance to speak, inhale and live this while i am creating.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Jupiterian'?

A Jupiterian is someone from Jupiter. The inspiration behind it is, like i said, to create a world where we could apply all the horror sci-fi stuff we love. It´s like there were a race in Jupiter, worshiping ancient and giant gods like Azathoth. The songs Procession Towards the Monolith and Archaic are basically about that.

5.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

We played one gig last friday that was awesome. It´s a very professional venue here in Brazil, a place for huge bands, so the backline and equipment is fantastic. Our stage performance is very, very loud, intense and oppressive.

6.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?

Not in a near future. We are focusing on writting new songs and get back to the studio to record the next full lenght in the beginning of 2015. We plan to start booking shows and our first european tour in Europe maybe by the end of 2015 or 2016.

7.On the ep you had Mories Of Gnaw their Tonques and James Plotkin of Khanate on a couple of your tracks, how did you get in contact with these musician's and can you also tell us a little bit more about the contributions on the recording?

James Plotkin did the mastering. I was looking for someone with expertise in doom to bring out the best of our music in the final result and he was the first one that came to mind, since i am fan of all his work as musician and the bands he´s working with.

Mories is a friend of mine. We started to chat 4 years ago when i interviewed him for my blog. We met in the last two Roadburn editions so when i asked him to join in for a small part in this recording, he accepted and sent me his piece really quickly. He worked on some violins, voices and ambiences for the song Archaic.

8.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?

We are unsigned and looking for labels that can support us in europe and/or USA which, places where we plan to tour.

9.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of doom, sludge, and death metal?

It´s been fantastic. We receive a lot of messages from people around the world supporting us and trying to help with something, including booking a concert in their city, publishing us in their website. We are really happy about the reception of the EP

10.When can we expect a full length album and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

We are working on the songs for the full length to be recorded in the beginning og 2015. It was supposed to be a new EP, but instead we decided it was to come out as whole album. These tracks are even more darker, gloomer and harsher. In the meantime, we are working on a collaboration with Bemonio, a dark ambient/drone band from Brazil to be recorded soon and this is coming out a really monolithic piece of sludge doom.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Dude, when we came with the idea for this band, i always had in my mind something that could sound as Anathema on Serenades and Pentecost III, but with a sludge approach and all that atmosphere of bands such as Asunder, Graves at Sea, Grief, Noothgrush. Other bands that influences me a lot when i am creating are old Katatonia, October Tide, Thergothon and the might Mournful Congregation which i had the chance to see live and that shit was soul crushing, almost a religious experience.

Nowadays i am listening to Arvo Pärt.

12.What are some of your non musical interests?

Literature, old horror and sci-fi movies, collecting skulls, comics and a pint of Guiness.

Jupiterian/Archaic/2014 EP Review

  Jupiterian  are  a  band  from  Brazil  that  plays  a  mixture  of  funeral  doom,  sludge,  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2014  ep  "Archaic".

  A very  distorted  sound  along  with  a  great  amount  of  reverb  starts  off  the  ep  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavy  doom  metal  direction  along  with  some  deep  death  metal  growls  and  after  awhile  the  music  starts  utilizing  more  melody  and  adding  in  elements  of  sludge  as  well  as  some  atmospheric sounds  which  takes  the  recording  into  more  of  a  funeral  doom  direction.

  You  can  hear  black  metal  screams  being  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording  at  times  along  with  some  melodic guitar  leads  as  well  as  the  first  track  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  on  the  second  track  a  brief  use  of  clean  playing  is  added  into  the  song  before  making  a  return  to  a  heavier  musical   direction  and  on  the  last  track  they  bring  in  a  very  long  and  epic  10  minute  song  that  also  brings  in  spoken  word  samples  from  a  1950's  film  while  also  keeping  around  a  very  melodic  and  heavy  sound.

  Jupiterian  takes  a  very  melodic  and  heavy  style  of  funeral  doom  and  adds  in  elements  of  sludge  along  with  some  death  metal growls  and  a  touch  of  black  metal  to  create  their  own  musical  sound,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  for  being  a  self  released  recording  while  the  lyrics  cover  mythology,  cosmos,  occultism,  Lovecraft,  Horror  and  Science  Fiction  themes.  

  In  my  opinion  Jupiterian  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  funeral  doom,  sludge  and  death  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Currents  of  Io".  8  out  of  10.
