Coltsblood/Un/2019 Split Album Review

  This  is  a  review  of  a  self  released  split  between  United  Kingdom's  Coltsblod  and  U.S.A's  Un  which  will  be  released  in  February  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Coltsblood  who  return  with  their  mixture  of  sludge  and  funeral  doom  metal  while  also  showing  more  of  a  black  metal  influence  this  time  around.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  atmospheric  sounding  synths  and  a  powerful  bass  guitar  sound  which  also  evolves  into  more  of  a  slower  funeral  doom  metal  direction.  Their  track  is  very  20  minutes  in  length  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  deep  death  metal  growls  along  with  some  black  metal  screams  also  being  used  at  times.


  The  riffs  also  capturing  the  heaviness  of sludge  metal  while  the  music  also  uses  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  when  the  music  finally  speeds  up.  Distorted  guitar  leads  are  also  added  into  some  parts  of  the  music  along  with  the  song  also  adding  clean  guitars  into  some  parts  of  the  music  and  spoken  words  also  being  used  briefly.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  myths.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  track  from  Coltsblood  which  shows  them  mixing  black  metal  in  with  their  mixture  of  sludge  and  funeral  doom  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.

  Next  up  is  Un  who  return  with  their  mixture  of  funeral  doom,  death  and  sludge  metal.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  clean  playing  along  with  some  drums  after  awhile  while  their  track  is  21  minutes  in  length.  When  the  music  goes  into  a  heavier  direction  it  brings  in  more  of  a  slow  funeral  doom  metal  style  which  also  introduces  death  metal  growls  onto  their  side  of  the  recording.

  At  times  the  music  also  mixes  in  the  heaviness  of  sludge  while  the  dark  and  depressive  sounding  melodies  in  the  riffing  go  back  to  the  early  90's  atmospheric  doom/death  metal  era  and  the  song  always  sticks  to  a  slower  direction  as  well  as  some  screams  also  being  used  briefly,  towards  the  end  drones  are  also  added  into  the  music.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the lyrics  cover  death,  emptiness,  grief  and  desolation  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  track  from  Un  which  shows  their  music  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  direction  than  previous  releases  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  sludge  and  doom  metal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  sludge  and  funeral  doom/death  metal.  8  out  of  10.

Coltsblood/Ascending Into Shimmering Darkness/Black Bow Records/2018 CD Review

  United  Kingdom's  Coltsblood  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  their  mixture  of  sludge  and  funeral  doom  metal  and  the  album  will  be  released  on  May  15th  2018  by  Black  Bow  Records  and  is  called  "Ascending  Into  Shimmering  Darkness".

  A  very  dark  yet  heavy  funeral  doom  metal  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  melodic  guitar  solos  and  leads  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  as  well  as  the  vocals  being  mostly  deep  death  metal  growls  and  all  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  while  the  high  pitched  screams  also  add  in  a  touch  of  black  metal  along  with  the  riffs  also  bringing  in  the  heaviness  of  sludge  as  well  as  adding  in  some  more  melody  on  some  of  the  later  tracks  and  as  the  album  progresses  elements  of  crust  punk  can  also  be  heard  at  times  and  a  couple  of  tracks  also  adds  a  small  amount  of  clean  guitars  and  keyboards  onto  the  recording.

  Coltsblood  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to  their  mixture  of  sludge  and  funeral  doom  metal  from  previous  releases,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  myths,  legends,  history,  death  and  human  mind  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Coltsblood  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  sludge  and  funeral  doom  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Mortal  Wound"  and  "The  Final  Winter".  8  out  of  10.

Coltsblood/Into The Unfathomable Abyss/Candlelight Records/2014 CD Review

  Coltsblood  are  a  band  from  the  United  Kingdom  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  that  plays  a  mixture  of  funeral  doom  metal  and  sludge  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  album  "Into  The  unfathomable  Abyss"  which  will  be  released  by  Candlelight  Records.

  The  album  starts  out  with  a  dark  and  distorted  sound  along  with  drums  as  well  as  some  screams  in  the  background  and  after  the  intro  the  music  goes  into  a  more  heavy  funeral  doom  metal  direction  and  after  a  couple  of  minutes  sludge  style  screams  make  their  way  into  the  music  and  after  awhile  dark  sounding  melodies  become  a  part  of  the  recording  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  As  the  album  continues  death  and  black  metal  vocals  also  start  making  their  way  into  the  music  along  with  a  small  amount  of  guitar  leads  an d they  also  bring  in  a  very  fast  song  bordering  on  black  metal  and  crust  along  with  brutal  blast  beats  before  returning  to  a  slower  and  doomier  sound  while  also  speeding  up  again  in  certain sections  of  the  record.

  With  this  album  Coltsblood  continue  their  mixture  of  funeral  doom  metal  and  sludge  while  also  bringing  in  a  small  amount  of  fast  parts  as  well  as  a  small  dose  of  black  metal  this  time  around  and  this  is  a  very  dark  and  heavy  sounding  recording  and  I  see  this  being  one  of  the  big  highlights  for  doom  metal  in  2014.

  Song  lyrics  cover  dark  myths,  legends,  history,  death  and  the  human  mind,  while  the  production  has  a  very  strong,  powerful,  heavy,  dark  and  professional  sound  where  you  can  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording  as  well  most  of  the  songs  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  from  Coltsblood  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  funeral  doom  metal  and  sludge,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Blood"  "Grievous  Molestation"  and  "Return  To  The  Lake  Of  Madness".  8/5  out  of  10.

Coltsblood/Beyond The Lake Of Madness/Ulthar Records/2013 EP Review

  Coltsblood  are  a  band  from  the  United  Kingdom  that  plays  a  mixture  of  funeral  doom,  drone  and  sludge  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2013  ep  "Beyond  The  Lake  of  Madness"  which  was  released  by  Ulthat  Records.

  "Abyss  Of  Aching  Insanity"  begins  with  some  dark  sounding  guitar  riffs  along  with  some  drone  style  bass  guitars  in  the  background  and  after  awhile  the  music  gets  heavier  along  with  some  drums  and  sludge  style  screams  and  the  bass  guitars  become  a  lead  instrument  along  with  some  amplifier  distorted  sounds  and  after  a  few  minutes  there  is  a  brief  use  of  funeral  doom  metal  style  guitar  leads  and  a  few  minutes  the  song  head  into  a  drone  direction.

  "Beneath  Black  Skies"  begins  with  some  heavy  bass  guitar  riffs  and  amplified  distortion  and  after  awhile  the  drums  and  vocals  start  making  their  way  into  the  song  and  a  few  minutes  later  their  is  a  brief  use  of  guitar  leads  before  going  into  a  more  heavier  sludge  direction  and  as  the  song  moves  on  there  are  some  doom/death  metal  growls  being  utilized  in  some  parts  which   leads  to  more guitar  leads  coming  in  and  out  along  with  the  song  returning  to  its  sludge  roots  and  towards  the  end  amplified  drone  sounds  make  their  way  into  the  mix.

  Song  lyrics  cover  dark  myths,  legends  and  history,  while  the  production  has  a  very  dark,  heavy,  raw  and  primitive  sound  while  you  can  still  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording  along  with  the  songs  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  In  my  opinion  Coltsblood  are  a  very  great  sounding  hybrid  of  drone,  funeral  doom  and  sludge  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Abyss  Of  Aching  Insanity".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.
