Kalbrian Syndrome Interview

 

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band? 

1.Kalabrian Syndrome is an instrumental trio (guitar, bass, drums) that blends in heavy rock, psychedelic, drone, ambient and noise elements always in a dynamic frame, that uses all sort of patterns to deliver a story behind every song. 

2.So far you have released a n ep, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style that you went for on the recording? 

2.We wanted it to be straight forward ,no polishing, no editing ,no sort of sound design trickery that the rest of the music business had fed us .So ,we went to the studio played the songs live ,hit the rec button, choose which version of the song works best. Did some mixing and mastering and there you have it.

 3.So far all of your music has been instrumental, are you open to using vocals on future releases? 

3.Really don’t know, Voice is a just another instrument right? With one major difference….the frequencies that produces mean something….there are words….so it has to be well tuned and really have something interesting to say….difficult task. If the right person ,that can fill that role comes our way, we re happy to try it. 

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Kalbrian Syndrome'?

 4.Its just and Inside joke between the band and friends ,so as the titles of the songs. 

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the ep cover? 

5.It is a photo taken in our home studio in the middle off a session by our friend kellaki. 

6.Has the band done any live shows or open to the idea? 

6.Of course we are open to the idea ,but covid-19 had other plans. 

7.The ep was released by 'Submersion Records'. how did you get in contact with this label? 7.Submersion Records is a known label in the Underground scene in Thessaloniki and good friends of us. 

8.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of experimental and heavier genres?

 8.its been great so far, we love the fact that different people have different favourite track on the EP. 

9.When can we expect a full length and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future? 

9.Really don’t know, we are constantly writing new material, we have some very exciting tracks so far, we experimenting with some new gear ,new sounds. We would like to have a full length album out somewhere in the beginning of 2022 

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays? 

10.We are 3 very different people ,each and everyone brings his own thing to the table., and I think that is pretty obvious if you listen to the EPI. Now if the topic comes to bands,9 out 10 it will lead to a major pointless argument.

 11.What are some of your non musical interests? 

11.We play for fun …we don’t pay bills from music. All of us have day jobs.. the little time that we can spent in our day for fooling around goes to the band.

Вий/Oblivium/Cursed Monk Records/2020 CD Review

 

  Вий  are  a  band  from  Italy  that  plays  a  mixture  of  sludge  and  funeral  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2020  album  "Oblivium"  which  was  released  by  Cursed  Monk  Records.

  Distorted  amp  sounds  start  off  the  album  before  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  while  also  adding  in  some  high  pitched  screams  which  also  mix  sludge  and  black  metal  together  which  also  throw  in  deep  growls  at  times  along  with  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  the  heaviness  of  funeral  doom  metal.  

  Some  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  some  of  the  music  also  shows  an  influence  of  stoner  metal.  The  riffs  also  add  in  a  small  amount  of  melody  at  times  along  with  all  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  as  well  as  a  couple  of  tracks  also  introducing  spoken  word  parts  onto  the  recording,  when  the  music  finally  speeds  up  a  brief  use  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  and  elements  of  d  beat  can  also  be  heard  on  the  closing  track.

   Вий  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  sludge  and  funeral  doom  metal  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own  along  with  some  touches  of  black  and  stoner  metal.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  occultism,  mythology,  darkness  and  misanthropy  themes.

  In  my  opinion   Вий  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  sludge  and  funeral  doom  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Thanatos"  and  "Anxietaten".  8  out  of  10,.

 

      

Triskelis/Malicon/Ghost Record Label/Broken Bones Records2021 Full Length Review

  

   Triskelis are a solo project from Italy that plays a mixture of stoner, doom and dark metal and this is a review of his album "Malicon" which will be released in 2021 as a joint effort between Ghost Record Label and Broken Bones Records.

  A  very  dark  sounding  intro  starts  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  stoner  metal direction. The  music avoids  the use of a regular guitar along with the slower sections off the songs also adding in the heaviness of doom metal, .

  Synths can also be heard in some parts of the recording while all of the music is instrumental.  At times the music also brings in elements of black and dark metal along with the music also having it's atmospheric moments and all of the music sticks to either a slow or mid tempo direction, one track also adds in a brief use of clean playing.

  Triskelis plays a musical style that takes stoner, dark and doom metal and mixes them together to create a sound of his own as well as keeping everything instrumental while the production sounds very dark.

  In my opinion Triskelis are a very great sounding mixture of stoner, dark and doom metal and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this solo project. RECOMMEND TRACKS INCLUDE "Gormarn" "Tiev" and "Ruatt". 8 out of 10.

Kalabrian Syndrome/Self Titled/Submersion Records/2020 EP Review

 

 Kalabrian Syndrome  are  a  band  from  Greece  that  plays  an  instrumental  mixture  experimental  and  stoner  metal  with  some  elements  of  ambient,  drone,  psychedelic,  blues  and  jazz  rock  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  titled  2020   ep  which  was  released   by  Submersion  Records.

  Atmospheric  sounding  drones  start  off  the  ep  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  stoner  metal  direction  while  the  melodies  add  in  touches  of  blues  rock.  All  of  the  music  is  also  instrumental  along  with  some  bass  guitar  leads  also  being  utilized  at  times  and  the  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  distorted  style.

  A  lot  of  the  music  also  sounds  improvised  while  the  music  also  has  its  psychedelic  and  experimental  moments.  Elements  of  avant  jazz  can  also  be  heard  in  the  song  structures  along  with  a  couple  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  as  well  as  all  of  the  tracks  also  sounding  different  from  each  other  and  towards  the  end  touches  of  ambient  can  also  be  heard  and  the  closing  track  also  adds  in  a  small  amount  of  clean  playing.

  Kalabrian  Syndrome  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  experimental,  ambient,  drone,  psychedelic,  jazz,  blues  rock  and  stoner  metal  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own  as  well  as  keeping  everything  instrumental  while  the  production  sounds  very  dark.

  In  my  opinion  Kalbrian  Syndrome  are  a  very  great  sounding  instrumental  mixture  of  experimental  and  stoner  metal  with  some  touches  of  ambient,  drone,  psychedelic,  jazz  and  blues  rock  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Ashtomouth"  and  "Villa  Romantica".  8  out  of  10.

Tuskar/The Monolith Sessions/Riff Rock Records/2019 EP Review

  United  Kingdom's  Tuskar  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  their  mixture  of  stoner,  sludge  and  doom  metal  with  some  black  metal  touches  from  their  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2019  ep "The  Monolith  Sessions"  which  was  released  by  Riff  Rock  Records.

  A  very  distorted  sound  starts  off  the  ep  before  going  into  a  heavier  musical  direction.  Elements  of  sludge  and  doom  metal  can  also  be  heard  in  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  while  the  first  track  is  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Vocals  are  done  in  most  of  an  angry  shouting  and  screaming  style  while  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  when  the  music  speeds  up  as  well  as  adding  in  a  touch  of  black  metal.  Dark  sounding  melodies  can  also  be  heard  in  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  most  of  the  music  sticking  to  mostly  a  slow  or  mid tempo  style  as  well  as  mixing  in  some  influences  of  stoner  rock

  On  this  recording  Tuskar  remains  true  to  the  mixture  of  stoner,  sludge  and  doom  metal  from  their  previous  releases  along  with  some  touches  of  black  emtal.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Tuskar  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  stoner,  sludge  and  doom  metal  with  some  touches  of  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "The  Tide".  8  out  of  10.

Tuskar/The Tide, Beneath, The Wall/Riff Rock Records/2018 EP Review

  Tuskar  are  a  duo  from  The  United  Kingdom  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  mixture  of  stoner,  sludge  and  doom  metal  with  a  touch  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  ep  "The  Tide,  Beneath,  The  Wall"  which  will  be  released  in  December  by  Riff  Rock  Records.

  Distorted  guitar  amp  noises  start  off  the  ep  before  adding  in some  very  heavy  doom  metal  riffs  which  also  capture  the  heaviness  of  sludge  while  most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  the  vocals  adding  in  a  clean  stoner  rock  touch  as  well  as  adding  in  some  aggressive  screams.

  A  decent  amount  of  melody  can  also  be  heard  in  the  guitar  riffs  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  add  in  blast  beats  and  black  metal  elements  along  with  the  music  also  having  its  progressive  and  psychedelic  moments  and  at  times  the  riffs  also  go  into  more  of  a  mid  tempo  direction  which  gives  the  songs  more  diversity  and  clean  playing  can  be  heard  briefly  on  the  closing  track.

  On  this  recording  Tuskar  remains  true  to  their  mixture  of  stoner,  sludge  and  doom  metal  while  still  having  a  slight  black  metal  influence,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  mythology  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Tuskar  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  stoner,  sludge  and  doom  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "The  Wall".  8  out  of  10.

Sumeru/Summon Destroyer/Medusa Crush Recordings/2018 Cassette Review

  Sumeru  are  a  band  from  Australia  that  plays  a  mixture  of  stoner,  sludge  and  doom  metal  along  with  some  elements  of  groove,  death  and  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  album  "Summon  Destroyer"  which  will  be  released  on  cassette  in  October  by  Medusa  Crush  Recordings.

  A  very  dark  and  ritualistic  sounding  intro  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  melodic  chants  in  the  background  before  going  into  a  heavier  doom  metal  direction  while  also  capturing  the  heaviness  as  sludge  as  well  as  the  solos  and  leads  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

  Elements  of  groove  and  stoner  metal  can  also  be  heard  in  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  the  riffs  also  bringing  in a  decent  amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies  as  well  as  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Vocals  bring  in  a  very  rough  yet  melodic  style  along  with  some  aggressive  screams  and  shouts  while  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  at  times  as  well  as  some  death  metal  growls  and  black  metal  influenced  riffing  also  being  utilized  at  times  as  well  as  some  psychedelic  elements  also  being  used  briefly,  a  couple  track  also  brings  in  a  brief  use  of  acoustic  guitars  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  for  a  few  seconds  there  is  also  a  small  amount of  blast  beats  and  there  is  also  an  instrumental  which  also  introduces  stringed  instruments  onto  the  recording.

  Sumeru  plays  a  musical  style  that  mixes  sludge, s toner  and  doom  metal  together  along  with  some  touches  of  groove,  black  and  death  metal  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Indian  Occultism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Sumeru  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  stoner,  sludge  and  doom  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Temple"  "Dura!  Durga!"  and  "A  New  Ritual".  8  out  of  10.

Spaceslug/Eye The Tide/BFSD Records/2018 CD Review

  Spaceslug  are  a  band  from  Poland  that  plays  a mixture  of  sludge,  stoner  and  doom  metal  with  some  black  metal  touches  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  album  "Eye  The  Tide"  which  will  be  released  in  July  by  BFSD  Records.

  Atmospheric  sounding  drones  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  powerful  sounding  bass  guitar  leads  which  also  takes  the  music  into  more  of  a  proto  and  stoner  metal  direction  while  the  guitar  solos  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  as  well  as  the  songs  also  mixing  in  the  heaviness  of  doom  and  sludge  metal.

  Melodic  vocals  can  also  be  heard  at  times  while  all  of  the  tracks  are  very  long and  epic  in  length  along  with  some  acoustic  guitars  also  being  used  at  times  as  well  as  the  music  also  bringing  in  a  great  amount  of  psychedelic  elements  and  at  times  the  music  adds  in  influences  of progressive  rock  and  when  screams a re  utilized  they  bring  in  a  touch  of  black  metal  and  also  adds  in  blast  beats  when  the  music  finally  speeds  up.

  Spaceslug  plays  a  musical  style  that  is  mostly  rooted  in  sludge,  stoner  and  doom  metal while  also  mixing  in  black  metal,  psychedelic  and  progressive  rock  elements  to  create  something  very  original,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  the  deepest  and  darkest  parts  of  the  universe.

  In  my  opinion  Spaceslug  are  a  very  great  sounding  psychedelic  mixture  of  stoner,  sludge  and  doom  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Spaced  by  One" a nd  "Words  Like  Stones".  8  out  of  10.

Cokegoat/Barren Heir/2018 Split Album Review

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  album  between  Illinois's  Cokegoat  and  Barren  Heir  which  will  be  self  released  in  June  of  2018  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Cokegoat  a  band  that  plays  a  mixture  of  stoner  and  doom  metal.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  avant garde  style  stringed  instruments  before  going  into a   heavier  direction  while also  introducing  sludge  style  screams  onto  the  recording  which  also  have  a  touch  of  hardcore  to  them  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  post  metal  style  along  with  the  riffs  also  bringing  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  while  desert  style  folk  instruments  and  acoustic  guitars  can  also  be  heard  briefly  as  well  as  a  small  amount  of  clean  vocals,  psychedelic  elements  can  also be  heard  on  a  couple  of  the  tracks.

  Cokegoat  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to  their  mixture  of  stoner  and  doom  metal,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  life,  death,  earth  and  the  moon  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Cokegoat  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  stoner  and  doom  metal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of   the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Rainbow  Calley"  and  "Pig  On  A  Horse".

  Next  up  is  Barren  Heir  a  band  that  plays  a  mixture  of  sludge  and  doom  metal  along  with  some  experimental,  psychedelic  blues,  hardcore  and  black  metal  elements.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  clean  playing  while  both  of  their  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  before  going  into  a  heavier  doom  metal  direction  which  also  captures  the  heaviness  of  sludge  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  bringing  in  elements  of  blues  rock.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  their  side  of  the  recording  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  some  of  the  guitar  leads  also  add  in  elements  of  post  metal  along  with  the  vocals  also  adding  in  hardcore  style  shouts  and  at  times  the  music  also  adds  in  touches  of  psychedelia  and  black  metal.

  Barren  Heir  plays  a  musical  style  that  is  mostly  rotted  in  sludge,  post  and  doom  metal  while  the  black  metal,  hardcore,  blues,  psychedelic  and  hardcore  elements  gives  the  songs  more  originality,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Barren  Heir  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  sludge  and  doom  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Tracing  Light  Pt.  1".

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  stoner,  sludge  and  doom  metal.  8  out  of  10.

Absent/Towards The Void/World War Now Records/2018 CD Review

 Absent  are  a  band  from  Brazil  that  plays  a  mixture  of  psychedelic,  sludge,  stoner  and  funeral  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  album  "Towards  The  Void"  which  will  be  released  on  February 23rd  by  World  War  Now  Records.

  Powerful  sounding  bass  guitars  along  with  some  psychedelic  elements  and  clean  playing  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  sludge  metal  direction  while  the  clean  vocals  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  stoner  and  traditional  metal  feeling  and  all  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  70's  metal  style  while  the  riffs  also  bring  in  the  heaviness  of  funeral  doom  metal  along  with  some  clean  playing  and  spoken  word  parts  also  being  used  briefly  as  well  as  some  mid paced  riffing  also  being  used  at  times  and  as  the  album  progresses  the  guitar  leads  start  bringing  in  a  more  modern  and  atmospheric  style.

  Absent  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  psychedelic,  stoner,  sludge,  heavy  and  funeral  doom  metal  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of t heir  own,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  chaoism,  ophiolatry,  misery,  and  altered states  of  consciousness  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Absent  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  psychedelic,  stoner,  sludge  and  funeral  doom  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Ophidian  Womb"  and  "Funeral  Son".  8  out  of  10.

Tuskar Interview

1. For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

Tyler: We are just a couple of guys making some angsty music together. We just make the music we want to hear and hope other people want to hear it too.

Tom: Yeah, from our beginnings just jamming in a room we've continued to go where the wind takes us, like Pocahontas.



2. How would you describe your musical sound?

Tom: Imagine you have a big cauldron of music and you throw in some doom, sludge, black, and maybe a bit of Madonna and that's pretty much Tuskar.

Tyler: We are trying to create something a little bit different from the scene, we take inspiration from all the great bands around us but put our own twist on it. We feel it helps that we're both pretty young so we have a fresh approach to how doom should be done.



3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?

Tyler: Well the first EP is based around the Celtic goddess Arianrhod. The majority of the lyrical content is based around fate and the concept of time. Like life is short, so control your own destiny.



4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Tuskar'?

Tom: As much as Tyler doesn’t want to admit it, we are named after a video game character, we were in the pub and struggling for a name so I just thought of the doomiest sounding character I could think of. No deep shit here haha.



5.Currently there are only 2 members in the band, are you open to expanding the line up or do you prefer to remain a duo?

 Tom: While the idea has crossed our minds I think we both enjoy the dynamic of being a two piece - less people to organise, less people to have creative differences with, and less people to share rider beer with.

Tyler: Yeah I don’t think we're gonna expand anytime soon, but it’s never going going to be completely off the table.





6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

Tyler: Playing with Monolord was one of my favourite shows, they are such an on point band live! And as for our show I try to create energy on the stage that translates across into the crowd, despite me being in the same place I try to never stay static on stage.

Tom: I think our shows are a bit like a journey. There's a beginning, a middle and an end and hopefully you’re in a different place than when we started.



7.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?

 Tyler: Yeah we have a few more shows to finish the year off, including an awesome hometown show supporting Red Fang. Then we are gonna leave the beginning of 2018 off to work on the new EP and then hit the road in March and April, hopefully hitting Europe in the process!



Tom: There's some killer lineups we’ve been added to in November and December that I can’t wait to play, we're going to be on the road from the 30th of Nov to the 3rd of Dec including our first headline show.



8.Currently the band is signed to 'Riff Rock Records', can you tell us a little bit more about this label?

 Tom: Riff Rock is great, ever since we got on board they’ve been behind us all the way. We definitely wouldn’t be speaking to you guys now if it weren’t for them haha.

Tyler: Leigh has really helped us find a footing with the the scene and beyond so we can’t thank him enough, also he's real good for buying Guinness.





9.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of stoner, sludge and doom metal?

Tyler: I’ve been really surprised with the response from afar that we have been getting. Got to give a big shoutout to Ygor Silva from Brazil for helping spread our music on a global level.



Tom: Yeah I’m so glad that our music is being enjoyed by people from all corners of the world, I just hope we can go out and play for them one day!



 10.When can we expect a full length album and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Tom: We have plans for a full length at the end of next year but nothing is set in stone, we will just go with what feels right, we don’t want to release something that isn’t the best of what we have.

Tyler: Yeah as we change as musicians we are going to change as a band so our music won’t ever stay the same. With each release we are going to experiment more and more, with everything from styles, instrumentation, composition, the lot! Hopefully you won’t ever be able to expect what's going to come next.



11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?



Tyler: So many bands have influenced our style, we try to keep our sound as separate from anything that’s around at the moment  and I feel like we’ve achieved that. Listening wise, I think I can speak for both of us when I say we listen to such broad range of music, but recently I’d say the main band I’ve been listening to is Aussie sludge/death titans ‘LO!’.

Tom: Everything we listen to ends up changing what we write one way or another, whether it be bands like Mastodon and Conan to artist such as Thundercat and Kendrick Lamar (as unlikely as that sounds) so it’s hard to pinpoint specific influences. At the moment I’m spinning Mars Red Sky’s album ‘Apex III(Praise for the Burning Soul)’ pretty much on repeat.



12.What are some of your non musical interests?

Tyler: To be honest music takes up pretty much all of my life, but when I’m not playing, booking and organising shows I’m a bit of a foodie and I love to cook. Also can’t forget drinking Guinness.

Tom: My free time is taken up by two things when I’m not playing - my girlfriend and good ol' PC gaming.

Tuskar/Arianrhod/Riff Rock Records/2017 EP Review

  Tuskar  are  a  duo  from  the  United  Kingdom  that  plays  a  mixture  of   stoner,  sludge  and  doom  metal  with  some  touches  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017  ep  "Arianrhod"  which  will  be  released  on  October  20th  by  Riff  Rock  Records.

  Distorted  amp  noises  along  with  some  drum  beats  start  off  the  ep  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  direction  which  also  mixes  in  the  heaviness  of  sludge  and  doom  metal  while  the  clean  vocals  are  mostly  rooted  in  a  stoner  rock  style  and  some  of  the  riffs  also  bring  in  a  small  amount  of  melody.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  while angry  screams  are  also  utilized  at  times  along  with  some  black  metal  elements  also  being  added  into  some  parts  of  the  music  and  as  the  ep  progresses  a  brief  use  of  clean  guitars  can  also  be  heard  as  well  as  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  a  couple  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  Tuskar  plays  a  musical  style  that  is  mostly  rooted  in  sludge,  stoner  and  doom  metal  while  some  black  metal  elements  can  also  be  heard  at  times,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Tuskar  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  stoner,  sludge  and  doom  metal  with  a  touch  of  black  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Where  Strides  The  Collossus"  and  "Crimson  Skull".  8  out  of  10.

Burke And Hare Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?
We are a two piece sludge/stoner metal band from Hertfordshire, UK. The band consists of me (Tom) on guitar and vocals and Jack on drums.

2.So far you have released an ep, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording?
Heavy as fuck haha! We were basically concentrating on getting the best riffs that we could but also making it interesting. Like we love to have heavy swing timings to get your hips moving but also some brutal breakdowns where possible.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?
To be honest we don’t really focus too much on the lyrics. Its mostly what comes to mind when we’re jamming the songs out in practise. Rhino Ket is a just a surreal one about what if a Lion had a fight with a Rhino on ketamine? A1M is about driving up and down a motorway while stoned. Those two songs I didn’t really think too much about lyrical content. Suburban Coven was the exception though. It was inspired by an old women who lives round the corner from me and she has her three bins lined up outside her house, she lives at number 6, so when the bins are out they say 666. It just got my imagination going about her being a witch and being part of a coven in the heart of suburban England.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Burke And Hare',?
William Burke and William Hare were two serial killers in Edinburgh in 1828 who robbed graves and murdered people to sell their corpses to a doctor at the Royal College of Surgeons, so he could use them in his anatomy lectures. It sounds like a good basis for a metal band name don’t you think?

5.Currently there are only 2 members in the band, are you open to expanding the line up or do you chose to remain a duo?
We have talked about maybe adding another member but when you get down to it me and Jack have this telepathy with each other. We’ve been in bands together for a long time and its made us tight as a musical unit. We have both done separate things of course but when we get back into that rehearsal space together and back on stage, its like nothings changed and your ready to take on the world together. God that makes us sound like a married couple haha!

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?
I think we’ve enjoyed every single show we’ve done. We’d always come home from a gig and say to each other “that was the best one” only to say the same thing after the next gig. Locally though in Hertfordshire there’s a great metal scene. You always feel the love at the gigs and you end up making friends at every show, whether its yours or someone else's. London is always a treat to play as well. In terms of stage performance, we just try to have fun. Not take ourselves seriously and just have a laugh.

7.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?
We are trying to get some shows together for later this year. Our last show was in April but it feels like an eternity has past so we want to get back to gigging ASAP.

8.Can you tell us a little bit more about 'Moon Song Records'.?
Moon Song Records was a label started by a couple of mates of ours at university. We recorded and released our first song through them last year and we also recorded a couple of other songs with them and released them as the Moon Song Sessions. The label is sadly no longer running but they had a very eclectic roster of artists and we were proud to be the only metal band to have released music through them.

9.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of stoner and sludge metal?
I don’t know about the rest of the world but we’ve had a very positive reaction whenever we’ve played somewhere. People always seem sceptical about whether a two piece metal band can work but they always come up to us and say how massive we’ve sounded for just two guys.

10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
Probably tuning lower. We are suckers for tuning low. Maybe drop Q if we can managed that haha!

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
Eyehategod are the biggest influence on the band, no question about that. But also fuzzy stoner bands like Fu Manchu and Kyuss. The Melvins too, we mustn't forget them. Jack and me love our deathcore as well, so thats why we love our breakdowns. Bands like Suicide Silence, early Thy Art is Murder and Carnifex we listen to all the time on our journeys to practise and gigs. What I’m listening to nowadays is mostly industrial stuff like Throbbing Gristle and Godflesh. Jack I know is partial to some indie and emo like Mac DeMarco and Sunny Day Real Estate. To be fair I love those bands too.

12.What are some of your non musical interests?
Jack is the cool one out of the two of us. He’s a proper good skater. I’m the boring one who likes to read and watch films all day.

Burke And Hare/Self Titled/2017 EP Review

  Burke  And  Hare  a  band  from  the  United  Kingdom  that  plays  a  mixture  of  stoner and  sludge  metal  with  touches  of  black  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  and  self  titled  2017  ep.

  A  very  heavy  stoner  metal  sound  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  some  death  metal  growls  and  sludge  elements  a  few  seconds  later  and  after  awhile  high  pitched  screams  are  added  onto  the  recording  and  they  also  add  in  a  touch  of  black  metal  while  touches  of doom  metal  can  be  heard in  the  slow  riffs.

  At  times  the  riffs  bring  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  briefly  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  and  the  music  also  brings  in  a  great  mixture  of  both  slow  and  mid  paced  parts  as  well  as  adding  in  the  energy  of  punk  rock  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  sound  very  powerful  and  ritualistic  spoken  word  parts  are  added  on  the  closing  track.

  Burk  And  Hurke  plays  a  musical  style  that takes  stoner  and  sludge  metal  and  mixes  it  with  touches  of  black,  death  metal  and  punk  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Burke  And  Hurke  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  stoner  and  sludge  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "A1m". 8   out  of  10.

Fleshpress/Hulluuden Muuri/2017 Full Length Review

  Finland's  Fleshpress  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  that  is  also  in  the  stoner,  sludge  and  doom  metal  mixture  of  previous  releases  along  with  some  black  metal  elements  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2017  album  "Hulluuden  Muuri".

  Distorted  amp  noises  start  off  the  album  before  going  into a   very  fast  direction  that  also  uses  a  decent  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  music  a  black  metal  feeling  along  with  some  high  pitched  screams  and  when  guitar  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  distorted  style.

  A  great  amount  of  sludge  and  doom  metal  elements  can  be  heard  in  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  along  with  the  vocals  also  adding  in  screams  more  close  to  that  genre  and  a  couple  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  music  also  gets  very  progressive  at  times  along  with  a  touch  of  psychedelic  traces  and  most  of  the  music  sticks  to  a  slow  direction.

  Fleshpress  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to  the  sludge,  stoner,  and  doom  metal mixture  of  previous  releases  while  also  having  some  psychedelic  and  black  metal  elements,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Finnish  and  cover  misanthropy,  anger  and  disgust  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Fleshpress  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  sludge,  stoner,  and  doom  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Lunastuksen  Ajan  Vera  Riiti"  and  "Voiman  Taydellinen  Toteutuminen".  8  out  of  10.

Jagged Vision/Death Is This World/Fysisk Format/2017 CD Review

  Jagged  Vision  are  a  band  from  Norway  that  plays  a  mixture  of  hardcore,  stoner  and  doom  metal  with  a  touch  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017  album  "Death  Is  This  World"  which  was  released  by  Fysick  Format.

  A  very  heavy  hardcore  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  screaming  and  growling  vocals  a  few  seconds  later  and  a  small  amount  of  melody  can  also  be  heard  in  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  fashion  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  A  great  amount  of  doom  metal  influences  can  be  heard  in  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a small  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  and  as  the  album  progresses  elements  of  black  metal  are  added  onto  the  recording  as  well  as  some  influences  of  stoner  and  djent  and  a  brief  use  of  acoustic  guitars  can  also  be  heard  before  returning  back  to  a  heavier  direction  and  some  of t he  vocals  also  add  in  a  melodic  tone  mixed  in  with  the  aggressive  screams  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  Jagged  Vision  plays  a  musical  style  that  is  mostly  rooted  in  hardcore  while  mixing  in  elements  of  djent,  stoner,  doom  and  black  metal  to  create  something  very  original,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Jagged  Vision  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  hardcore  and  doom  metal  with touches  of  djent,  stoner  and  black  metal  and  if  you  are  a fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Betrayer"  "I  Am  Death"  "Seven  Seals"  and  "Palehorse".  8  out  of  10.

Lord Interview

1. Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording of the new album?

Steven Kerchner (vocals): We've been busy since recording last August integrating our current drummer Tony Petrocelly into the creative process. We've got a handful of new songs for an upcoming EP, as well as a song in the works for an upcoming 7in split with our friends in Endmaker.


2. You have a new album coming out in May, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording and also how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?


Will Rivera (guitar): We pride ourselves on never having any two of our releases sound the same or staying in one niche for too long. After having gone in a more cerebral and progressive direction on Awake, we wanted Blacklisted to be a much more visceral experience. Awake was much more of an introspective album, whereas Blacklisted moves the focus to the outside world and the music needed to reflect what we're exposed to on a daily basis. It's a much angrier and vicious release, but in the end we want to offer hope. It's easy to be the misanthropist or nihilist, but much harder to find a reason to fight through all of the filth and ugliness we see. We definitely branched out musically and anyone who has paid attention to our releases will find a red thread that connects all of our music.  In my opinion, we expanded our sound to truly represent the pedigree of the band members but still retained LORD's signature vibe.

Kerch: I think anytime LORD has a new release or begins writing new material it is drastically evolved or varied from the immediately previous effort.  In this case, Awake was an emotionally supercharged and globally conscious album, whereas Blacklisted is faster, more raw, and while still maintaining a globally conscious edge is also definitely the most pissed off ever lyrically since I joined the band.  


3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the newer music?


Kerch: Mile After Mile, the opening track on Blacklisted, is a song about a man named Tom Mitchell who lost his daughter to childhood cancer.  Seeing the eyes of this man fill with such passion and conviction as he continues to fight to bring more research, more funding, more awareness and more support to children with cancer and their families, convinced me this was a man that is an inspiration to the rest of us.  Rising above personal loss and dedicating his life to his foundation, Stillbrave, he has relentlessly improved innumerable  lives.  This song in particular is about one of his fund and awareness raising adventures where he, just a regular dude, trained and trained in order to run a 200 mile marathon, each mile dedicated to a different child and he's doing it again this year!



4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name LORD?


Will: When LORD began in the Spring of 2005, the name was just meant to invoke something powerful without necessarily aligning us with any belief system or sound.  I was listening to a lot of releases from the Southern Lord label at the time so it just seemed like the logical connection for the sound we were initially going for in the beginning. It's taken on many connotations over the years and we even flirted with a mantra on Chief by enforcing the idea of self revelation and belief, but ultimately it's a term of power.






5.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over years and also how would you describe your stage performance?


Will: I can sum it up in 3 words: Loud, Passionate and Chaotic.  We give it all we have every time we step on stage, because for us it's more than just a rock show, it's truly a method of catharsis.  There always seems to have been a black cloud that has followed this band and the members and instead of letting it destroy us, we unleash that on stage.  For us, it's not about who is the most extreme or even being popular, it's about integrity and being as real as we can be...warts and all.

Kerch: The Stoner Hands of Doom Festival in 2011 is still by far one of the most memorable shows of my entire life.  LORD played immediately after Cough, who features a former band mate from my first band so it was great to play with them.  We got to the venue to find out our then drummer was stranded two and a half hours away and we rushed out to get him and rushed to get back, the whole time questioning if we would make it back in time.  We made it with just moments to spare and the sonic bloodletting that followed ranks in my top five most memorable shows that I've been a part of.

6. Do you have any touring or show plans once the new album is released?


Will: As far as touring plans go, we're looking to do a few long weekend stints and plenty of regional shows throughout the VA/WV/MD area.  We're also hoping to branch out into other regions if time and finances allow.  We're doing this all on our own so it has to work for the 5 of us to take these risks financially without any label support.


7. Currently the band is signed to Heavy Hound Records, can you tell us a little bit more about this label?


Kerch: I was booking a weekly metal show at a local bar here in Northern Virginia with two friends of mine.  After building a supportive community and gaining a lot of interest from more bands in the area, the idea eventually was to be able to offer quality local shows with a revolving door of bands, not just the same ones again and again, and be able to offer these bands inexpensive studio access as well as inexpensive production of said recordings. I met Xeukatre this away and was pleased to be able to record them at K Hole Studios.  Shortly after launching the label the venue closed for unrelated reasons and things lost momentum, but I continued to release albums mostly from bands I'm involved in. 


8. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of stoner and sludge metal?

Will: Not sure how much of a worldwide impact we've had considering no label, lack of distribution and constant setbacks with line-up changes over the years, but I'd have to say that the stoner/doom/sludge scene has always been very good to us and has welcomed us back time and time again despite internal struggles and growing pains.  We wanna make good on people who've invested in this band and be able to be proud of the music that we create without bowing to expectations.  We feel that all we need to do is keep pushing and get ourselves in front of the right audiences.

9. What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part of?

Kerch: Palkoski released our final album in 2016 and I have since been focused mostly on LORD.  More recently however I got more serious about a hardcore grind project called Pain Tank whose debut album will be dropping not long before LORD's Blacklisted album, and I have been playing drums again in a project called Tumba Carcomida. 

Will: Tony is the main man behind the death metal band Construct of Lethe.  I am currently working on the follow-up to the Absent Sky debut and later this year will be releasing the long awaited debut EP by my dark folk project Barren River, which features the vocal talents of Ashleigh Chevalier.


10. Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?



Will: We've already started writing new material that will be released as a 7" vinyl split w/ Endmaker from Texas and also an EP that will hopefully see a Fall release.  So far, the material seems to be a cross between the progressiveness of Awake and the aggression of the Blacklisted material.  We're firing on all cylinders right now and the writing is definitely broadening our musical scope, with us incorporating influences from outside our usual arsenal.  We experiment with our sound to keep things interesting for us.

Kerch: The upcoming EP we're currently writing has quite a bit of dual percussion between myself and Tony, so it's definitely another journey, very unlike Blacklisted or any other previous effort.  I've chosen a few topics to tackle lyrically.  One song is called “Le Fleur Du Cobalt” and is about the use of child labor in the DRC to mine cobalt and other minerals needed for Western consumption.  Another one, entitled “Scorched” is a telling of the Earth revolting against its inhabitants.



11. What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?


Will: Not many people know this but the idea for LORD was actually conceived when most of the original lineup went to see Crowbar with Entombed and The Mighty Nimbus in February of 2005.  If you add some Celtic Frost, The Melvins and Cathedral, you have the early blueprint for LORD.  Over the years, our sound has evolved and has begun incorporating post metal, death metal, thrash and even traces of old school black metal. My current musical obsessions would have to be Inquisition, Immolation, Karyn Crisis' The Gospel of the Witches, Profanatica and Mark Lanegan.

Kerch: My approach to our 2011 album Awake was heavily influenced by old school hip hop.  Sometimes people think I'm kidding, but I'm telling the truth! There's a raw honesty in a lot of old school hip hop and music that speaks to me, that is transparent, that is honest, that grips me physically with goose bumps or an increased heart rate and this is a quality I seek out in all forms of music.  This is a quality I seek to always include in my own music.  Meaning what I say in my lyrics and being passionate about what I'm saying translates through the experience of performing the song into the listen.  When I listed to what we have created I want to enjoy it too, be proud of something. 

Todd Wuehrmann (guitar): Steve has recently turned me on to Viscera Infest. I think they might be my new favorite band. Soilent Green's Sewn Mouth Secrets in currently in my disc player. 



12. What are some of your non  musical interests?


Will: I can't really say I have any non musical interests.  Music is truly my life's passion.  The only other things that occupy that aspect of my life would be film and writing.  I'd love to write a screenplay someday as well as compile some of my writing.  We'll see I guess, but music is truly what I obsess over.

Kerch:  I need to be active creatively all the time, it's a definitely a healthy outlet for me.  I have three fully active projects right now and I'm still trying to fill my time with playing more music, I can't help myself.  I've also spent a considerable amount of time learning Eyal Yanilov's Krav Maga, at one point even training to becoming an instructor.  I absolutely love spicy food and all kinds of peppers.  I have a pepper garden that is rapidly expanding every year and growing more varieties.  I love to make different hot sauces and spicy treats from my pepper garden and share them with my friends and family.

Todd Wuehrmann (guitar):  Kayaking, hiking, weight lifting. I like to keep my blood pumping.

Chris Dugay (bass): I'm a volunteer firefighter with Citizen's Fire Company in Charles Town, WV and I love hiking civil war battlefields along with other local historic/scenic sites.


13. Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?



Will: I'd like to thank everyone who has supported us through years, all of the people who've taken a chance on booking us, and the bands that have shared a stage with us.  We're sincerely grateful to be able to continue to create our art and have anyone care about what we'd do.  This is something that we would do even if there wasn't an audience, but to have anyone else invest themselves in what we do is truly humbling.

Kerch: I am grateful to everyone who has been a part of this journey through life and the music that LORD has created.  Specifically in correlation to the Blacklisted album, I want to thank Tom Mitchell from the Stillbrave foundation for his role in inspiring and contributing vocals to the song Mile After Mile and the women, among them Amber Lyon of Reset, that inspired the lyrics for the song The Heart of a Hero.

Moribond/Craving/Depressive Illusions/2012 EP Review

  This  is  a  review  of  another  recording  from  Moribond  which  shows  the  music  going  for  more  of  a  funeral  doom  and  stoner  metal  mixture  with  a  touch  of  black  metal  and  the  ep  is  called  "Craving"  and  was  released  by  Depressive  Illusions  Records.

  A very  dark  and  melodic  funeral  doom  metal  sound  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  some  grim  black  metal  vocals  and  elements  of  stoner  rock  can  also  be  heard  at  times  in  both  the  riffing  and  guitar  solos  and  the  second  track  is  a  remastered song  from  the  demo  and  also  keeps  the  acoustic  guitars  and  psychedelic  elements  of  the  original  and  both  of  the  tracks  stick  to  a  very  slow  musical  direction  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Moribond  remained  true  to  the  stoner  and  funeral  doom  metal  mixture  of  the  demo  while  also  using  more  black  metal  vocals  this  time  around,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  depressive  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Moribond  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  funeral  doom  and  stoner  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Craving".  8  out  of  10.
