1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of the new album?
1. Dave: Things have slowed down a little lately. We've been recording a few things and we have some ideas in mind, such as making an album about driving which people can listen to while driving. We're also considering another part in the Freedom series but we're not sure yet.
2.Recently you have released a new album, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the new recording and also how does it differ
from the stuff you have released in the past?
2. Dave: I love the sound. I think it differs greatly because we worked with another metal band who already has an established sound.
They sent us some drum tracks and other bits to play with and play over, which was really fun. We typically never used drums until recently, and the drums that GWYF sent us were brilliant.
3.I have noticed the last 2 albums where in 2 different volumes, was this meant to be a double album?
3. Dave: Well not really. We did that album and had a great time doing it and listening to it, but a while late we though "Hey, this doesn't actually sound very metal or powerful at all" but we didn't want to bin it. So we thought "Well let's make part II?" and so we did. We are releasing a 2CD set on our label Satanica, but we're not sure if we want it to be a Best Of compilation or perhaps the Freedom album as a double album.
4.The band started out more experimental but with the new album there is more black metal, is this the direction you will also be doing more of in the future or are you planning on sticking in a more experimental direction?
4. Jimmy: I think that we'll be working towards a more structured black metal sound but we'll still be experimenting trying to find our true sound. There isn't a genre out there that describes us, maybe one day we'll be able to create a defining sound and that will become a new genre ov music.
5.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?
5. Dave: We like to explore sex, death, love occasionally (but usually the loss or hate side) and lately politics. I usually talk with Jimmy and we'll throw some ideas around and then he'll pen some riffs and music together and I'll get some lyrics down. We also did LFOF Part II because after we had the idea, we wanted to get it together for July 4th and luckily we did. One of our collaborators and a good friend, Lanza Manza, played it at his 4th of July party. We were thrilled.
6.I have read that the band was broken up for awhile, what was the cause of the split and also the decision to reform?
6. Dave: Well at the time, we felt BSOFD had run it's course. We hadn't had many ideas and when we did, we typically saved them for our solo albums and we both play pretty different genres seperatly. We stayed in touch however since we're all good friends and then we just started brainstorming more ideas and figured we'd comeback. So far our new work has fared better than our old work.
7.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Banished Souls ov Forbidden Desire'?
7. Dave: There's a bit of a story behind that. About 2 years ago, there were a few bands in our city and they all played the same kind of music, had the same basic names and MANY songs sounded the same. So we tried to think of what metal means to use personally and we came up with souls, banishment, hell, forbidden and desire. We tried to piece those together and it just came out as Banished Souls Ov Forbidden Desire.
8.On the bandcamp page you had plenty of albums, released in the last 2 years, do you feel this band puts a lot of time and effort into creating music?
8. Dave: Well yes and no. The first album we put quite a bit of effort into since at the time, we thought it would be just a one off kind of thing. But then we started getting some attention and we got on Satanica Productions, so we thought we'd keep going. We wanted to make the second album, Fornication In Flames, massive so we rushed it a little and it turned out really bad. Probably our worst if I'm honest.
But when our 3rd album got started, Hands Full Ov Hate, we took it slow and worked on it. We still feel it's our best album to date, both lyrically and musically. From then on, it was varying between quality and speed, so some albums are not as good as others, but we took our time with our recent albums and perfected them.
9.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?
9. Dave: We typically perform at friends parties and birthday parties.
Our best would have to be Jimmy's birthday party, we had a great time and so did everyone else. We don't do anything majorly crazy on stage, aside from some screams and jumping around. We have band t-shirts and we're going to get pig masks soon, so things are going to get really different for onstage shows.
10.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?
10. Dave: I'd really love to but Jimmy is a little hesitant about it, with good reason I suppose. We've had a few people get quite angry towards us and threaten us, so we're unsure on when or where we'd play.
11.According to the fb page the band was worked with both Depressive Illusions and Satanica, do you feel this 2 labels have been very helpful when it comes to getting your music out there heard?
11. Dave: They've been incredibly helpful, especially Depressive Illusions. I can't recall how many units we've sold but we've seen a few people post pictures of they're purchases. I've been told we have followings in most of Europe, especially Ukraine and France. Plus Satanica has really helped in getting us followings in New Zealand and Australia. We've been trying to crack the US and Canadian markets but they're not as big on us as other countries, the Freedom albums have helped us a little though (for Florida in particular).
12.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your recordings by fans
of underground music?
12. Dave: The Ukrainian metal scene seems to really enjoy us as does New Zealand, we've had quite a few messages here and there from people telling us how much they enjoy our music. We're hoping to get into other underground scenes across the globe but it's not something we can force.
13.Are the band members also involved with any other musical projects or bands?
13. Dave: Oh heaps. I'm personally working with a few lo-fi pop artists on mixing and production while also handling a solo career of my own. Jimmy has been working on an exhaustive experimental solo album, which has gotten both praise and also hate. It's mostly just me and Jimmy these days as other members tend to come and go, or just move away unfortunately. We may be getting a new drummer and bass player soon, it's just that they aren't quite into this genre. Until then, we're still looking for a drummer and bass player.
14.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
14. Dave: Well for the older albums, we primarily listened to local bands and got influence from them. But for the more recent albums like LFOF 1, I'd been listening to a lot of The Cure and The Flaming Lips while Jimmy had been listening to a lot of 80s hair metal like Guns & Roses and the like. As for LFOF 2, we looked at metal more and took influence from artists such as God Wrought Your Faith (whom we ended up working with), The Big Isaac, HP Spacecraft and also Chainsaw Penis.
15.What are some of your non musical interests?
15. Dave: I read quite a bit and watch a lot of movies mostly, particularly films like Eraserhead. I'm a massive David Lynch fan.
Jimmy is huge on cars, spending his free time going for long drives or working on his car, while also looking at new cars.
16.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
16. Dave: Not that I can really think of. We'd like to thank all our fans for enjoying us and we're glad they enjoy our music as much as we did making it, and to also keep watching our bandcamp and twitter, since no doubt we'll have new things coming in the next few months.
