Doomcult/Talsur/Nameless/2019 Split Album Review

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  album  between  Netherlands's  Doomcult  and  Russia's  Talsur  called  "Nameless"  which  was  self  released  in  2019  and  we  are  going  to  start  off  the  review  with  Doomcult  a  solo  project  who  returns  with  his  mixture  of  the  traditional,  atmospheric  and  funeral  doom  metal  genres.

  His  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  a  very  slow,  dark  yet  heavy  sound  while  all  of  his  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  Vocals  are  mostly  done  in  more  of  a  Venom  influenced  first  wave  black  metal  style  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  being  done  in  a  very  depressive  and  melodic  style.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  the  music  also  capturing  the  darkness  of  funeral  doom  metal.  The  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody,  one  track  also  brings  in  clean  vocals  as  well  as  all  of  the  music  sticking  to  a  slower  direction  and  his  side  of  the  split  closes  with  a  cover  of  Talsur's  "Waters  Of  Loss  which  also  brings  in  a  brief  use  of  keyboards.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Occultism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Doomcult  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  the  traditional,  atmospheric  and  funeral  styles  of  doom  metal,  you  should  check  out  his  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Plague".

  Next  up  is  Talsur  a  solo  project  that  plays  a  very  melodic  form  of  funeral  doom/death  metal.

  His  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  clean  playing  while  most  of  his  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length. A  great  amount  of  funeral  doom  emtal  elements  can  be  heard  in  the  slower  sections  of  the  music  along  with  the  vocals  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  and  the  riffs  also  use  a  great  amount  of  melody.

  When  screams  are  utilized  they  add  in  a  touch  of  black  metal  as  well  as  the  solos  and  leads  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  along  with  some  depressive  crying  being  added  into  the  background  briefly.  Growls  can  also  be  heard  at  times  and  all  of  the  music  sticks  to  a  slower  direction  and  his  side  of  the  split  closes  with  a  cover  of  Doomcult's  "Wrath". The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  loneliness,  despair  and  hopelessness  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Talsur  is  a  very  great  sounding  melodic  funeral  doom/death  metal  solo  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  his  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "The  Hateful  Hour".

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  funeral  and  melodic  doom  metal.  8  out  of  10.

Doomcult/Life Must End/Loneravn Records/2018 Full Length Review

  Netherlands  solo  project  Doomcult  have  returned  with  a  new  album  which  continues  his  mixture  of  traditional,  atmospheric  and  funeral  doom  metal  with  some  dsbm  elements  and  the  recording  is  called  "Life  Must  End"  and  was  released  by  Loneravn  Records.

  Melodic  guitar  leads  start  off  the  album  before  adding  in  some  slow  and  heavy  doom  metal  riffing  while  the  vocals  bring  in  an  80's  influenced  style  which  also  adds  in  a  touch  of  first  wave  black  metal  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies.

  A  great portion  of  the  tracks a re  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  music  also adds  in  the  more  traditional  style  of  doom  metal  with  some  influences  from  the  more  atmospheric  and  funeral  orientated  styles  of  the  genre  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  being  done  in  more  of  an  atmospheric  style as  well  as  some  tracks  also  mixing  in  elements  of  dsbm  which  also  results  in  a  brief  use  of  grim  screams,  one  track  also  introduces  melodic  chants  onto  the  recording  and  all  of  the  songs  stick  to  a  slower  direction.

  On  this  recording  Doomcult  remains  true  to  his  mixture  of  traditional,  atmospheric  and  funeral  doom  metal  while  also  expanding  on  the  elements  of  dsbm,  the  production  sounds  very  old  school  while  the  lyrics  cover  Occultism  and  Death  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Doomcult  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  traditional, atmospheric,  funeral  doom  metal  and  dsbm,  you  should  check  out this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Suffering"  "King  Of  Bones"  and  "Deathwish'.  8  out  of  10.

Doomcult Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?



Doomcult is a one-man band from the Netherlands. Doomcult glorifies doom-metal while introducing some DSBM and proto-black influences.



2.In July you had released a new ep, what are some of the things you have done different musically with the new material that you have not been able to do on your previous releases?



The first release by doomcult contained ideas which originated way back in time. I started writing doom songs a long time ago, but I was never in a band that played such music. I was too busy playing in all kind of bands to really take the time to craft these doom riffs into songs. That changed a couple of years ago. This resulted in the first album ‘End All Life’ which was released by Morbid Syndicate in 2016. The new release only contains new material and no old ideas. I think it better reflects my current state of mind.



3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects you explore with the music?



Doomcult is about abuse of power, propaganda, loss of self-control and blasphemy. To translate these topics into words, many references to occult themes are introduced.



4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Doomcult'?



Well, I think the name is a perfect match with the music, since it’s doom and thematically it covers occult themes. It is a powerful name.



5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the ep cover?



It is a devil that I met when I visited Germany. It was on the door of an old building, which was a fire station. I manipulated the photo a little to make it appear more alive. I thought it was cool to use a devil from the fire station and combine it with the title Ashes. Hahaha.



6.With this project you record everything by yourself, are you open to working with other musicians or do you prefer to work solo?



Well, I really like playing in a band. Playing together with other musicians gives new ideas and creativity. I would really like to do some doomcult songs with a complete band. Unfortunately, there are not too many doom fans among the musicians that I know. They all play much too fast… Maybe in the future.



7.The new ep was released by Loneravn Records, can you tell us a little bit more about this label?



Loneravn Records is a label from the Ukraine that is specialized in doom-metal in all its forms. It is worthwhile checking out their roster.



8.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of doom metal?



So far, it has been great. As for all underground bands it is hard to grab the attention of people. There is so much great music, there are so many great bands to discover. However, the people that did discover doomcult come from all over the world and they appear more positive then I could ever imagine. Many hail the atmosphere in my music. Of course, all these positive things doesn’t affect me being doomed. hahaha



9.Where do you see yourself heading into as a musician in the future?



For the near future, doomcult will release it’s second full length album. All music is recorded and mixed. This will be either at the end of 2018 or the start of 2019. I hope to release a split album sometime at the end of the winter. In the meanwhile I will continue writing and recording new material.



10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?



I either listen to Manowar or to Slayer… If there is some spare time, maybe My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost and some old Anthema. I’m really into Dautha and Necros Christos the last few months. And of course Urfaust and Celtic Frost…



11.How would you describe your views on occultism?



I drink my coffee out of the skull of a goat. For the rest I merely use references to the goatlord and the occult for describing all dark parts of our brains as humans.



12.What are some of your non musical interests?



The human mind.

Doomcult/Ashes/Loneravn Records/2018 EP Review

  Doomcult  are  a  band  from  the  Netherlands  that  plays  a  very  atmospheric  form  of  doom/death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  ep  "Ashes"  which  will  be  released  in  October  by  Loneravn  Records.

  A  very  dark,  heavy  and  melodic  doom  metal  sound  starts  off  the  ep  while  most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  some  angry  shouts  also  being  added  into  the  music  at  times  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  When  guitar  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  dark  and  melodic  style  while  elements  of  depressive  black  metal  are  added  into  some  parts  of  the  music  along  with  the  vocals  also  adding  in  more  of  an  80's  extreme  metal  style  at  times  and  all  of  the  songs  stick  to  either  a  slow  or  mid  tempo  direction  and  clean  vocals  are  added  onto  the  closing  track.

  Doomcult  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  traditional,  funeral  and  90's  era  atmospheric  doom/death  metal  styles  and  mixes  them  together  with  more  of  an  old  school  thrash/black  metal  style  vocal  to  create  something  original,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  aggressive  and  misanthropic  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Doomcult  are  a  very  great  sounding  original  and  atmospheric  funeral  doom/death  metal  band  and  if  you  are  looking  for  something  very  original,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Black  Fire".  8  out  of  10.

Doomcult Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?

At the moment I’m recording music for the second album. Seven new songs of doom-worship \\m//. Hopefully, the new album can be released somewhere this winter.

2.Recently you have released a new album, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording?

Doomcult is a doom band. I think you nailed it quite well in the review of the album. It’s a mixture of traditional doom, atmospheric doom and there’s some funeral stuff. It was the Peaceville three (Anathema, Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride) that raised my interest in doom back in the 90’s and I like to think of their early material as being quite influential.

3.I have also read that you have played other styles of metal before forming a doom metal band, what are some of the metal styles you have worked with in the past?

I would call it plain metal. A bit thrash, a bit stoner, a bit of everything. For those interested, we were named Bulldozer Breed.

4.The lyrics on the recording have a concept to them, can you tell us a little bit more about the song writing?

Well, uh, the concept is that we’re all going to die and there is nothing that we can do. Is that doomy enough? hahaha.
Basically, it’s a story of  a conspiracy. It’s a representation of the way that I look at the world. If you look at the amount of money that is being made in the weapon industry, then you start to realixe that some people are making huge profits on war. These people do not want world peace. They want fear. They want hate. They want a new cold war. And they have enough money to be influential... 
So from this scenario, I started writing about those people who buy power and who want to control our minds.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Doomcult'?

It’s a cool name and it fits the music and the lyrics.

6.Originally this band started out as a solo project but you have expressed interest in forming a full band, has this worked out yet and have you been able to find the right members?

Doomcult is still a solo project. I first want to finish the second album. From there, I’ll think of how to continue. If needed, my old band mates from Bulldozer Breed agreed to participate for live performances. 

7.Are you planning on doing any live shows with this band?

It would be really great to do some live shows. Hopefully, there will be some opportunities in the future.

8.The album was released on 'Morbid Syndicate', are you happy with the support they have given you so far?

It’s great that Morbid Syndicate showed interest in Doomcult and that they released the album. Of course, some more PR would be helpful, but still, they helped me out quite well.

9.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of doom metal?

The music that ended up on the album ‘End All Life’ had been haunting my brains for years, but since I was always occupied with bands with other styles, there was never an opportunity to do anything with that music. Eventually, I decided to record the songs by myself. When I finished the album and launched Doomcult, it felt awesome to share my ideas with the scene and to express my interest in dark and doomish music. Signing a deal and talking to metal webzines, it has all been more than I hoped for. Many hails to you hatredmeanswarzine for showing your interest for the underground!
Anyway, to answer you question : so far, reviews have been really positive, moreover Doomcult appeared on compilations in Portugal, France and Canada. The hardest part of course is to reach the right people: doomheads interested in plasphemous doom. There are so many great bands and they all want your attention.

10.Where do you see this band heading into musically during the future?

I’m satisfied with the musical style of Doomcult. I’ll stick to the conspiracy / anti-religion lyrics as well. So these aspects will stay. As mentioned, I’m working on the second album. I think that there is maybe some more influence from DSBM music. Furthermore, the slow songs might be even more slow than they were on ‘End All Life’.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

I only listen to Manowar. Period.
Okay, and to old Anathema, Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride… and Urfaust… and Ggu:ll… and Worship… and Reverend Bizarre. And a lot more. Also, I’m very curious to hear the new 40 Watt Sun.

12.Does Satanism or Occultism play any role in your music?

I’m an atheist. I do not believe in some bearded guy that lives in the sky, nor do I believe in a goatlord living underneath my feet. Satanism and occultism do play an important role in my lyrics, since they provide for the right atmosphere and imagery. In think ‘welcome to God’s cremation’ sounds a lot better than ‘welcome to the era where all that you value as beautiful and nice is absent’.

13.What are some of your non musical interests?

Reading about music. I just finished ‘Louder that Hell’. I had some good laughs…

 Doomcult  are  a  band  from  the  Netherlands  that  mixes  the  traditional,  atmospheric  and  funeral  styles  of  doom  metal  together  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2016  album  "End  Of  All  Life"  which  was  released  by  Morbid  Syndicate.

  A  very  dark  and  melodic  doom  metal  sound  starts  off  the  album  and  the  solos  and  leads  also  use  a  great  amount  of  depressive  melodies  and  after  awhile  grim  vocals  are  added  onto  the  recording  and  they  also  mix  in  rough  style  clean  singing  at  times  and  as  the  album  progresses  the music  starts  getting  heavier.

  Some  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  also  mix  in  influences  from  the  90's  United  Kingdom  atmospheric/doom  bands  while  also  mixing  in elements  of  funeral  doom  at  times  and  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  all  of  the  musical instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  growls  are  also  used  at  times  while  all  of  the  songs  stick  to  a  very  slow musical  direction  and  one  track  also  brings  in  a  brief  use  of  classical  guitars.

  Doomcult  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  the  traditional,  atmospheric  and  funeral  styles  of  doom  metal  and  mixes  it  in  with  a  first  wave  black  metal  vocal  approach  to  create  something  very  different,  the  production  sounds  very  old  school  while  the  lyrics  are  a concept  album  based  upon  desperation  and  despair.

  In  my  opinion  Doomcult  are  a  very  great  sounding  doom  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Master"  "Wrath"  and  "End  All  Life".  8  out  of 10.
