Naturale Interview

 

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the solo project?

The last few years it has been what I would describe as ambient psychedelic folk. Acoustic guitars, syths and voices play the main role and the tracks really take their time to build. In my mind what really makes this ambient is the willingness to let the sounds develop organically, an idea I have from David Toop which makes it more than a label. It is also a guide when writing/creating the songs. The project started in 2015 when I put out a compilation of tracks I had recorded over a few years on a tape label called It Was Gnarled. I did this without any real goal of doing any specific sound, but I liked distortion and the band Faust which I think shone through. Later I got interested in ambient music and in 2019 I had the chance to have enough peace and quiet to record Meditation Over Mørket. When the record came out three years later I was lucky enough to have quite a few friends who wanted to help me play it live. That has pushed the sound a little bit and has given me new opportunities. The music takes its time and is a lot more based on feeling than on precision. For the longer songs I describe what I would like it to sound like more than showing the others what to play. I think they like that.

2.In 2023 you released a full length, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style that you went for on the recording?

Yeah well, I wanted to do an ambient record. The recording was very loose and without any real ideas in terms of anything being written beforehand. I think I had one song, but that didn't even end up on the record. The music was also inspired by Danish jammy hippie music (something I don't like listening to but has always seemed like a lot of fun to play) and German synthesizer music from the 70's. Part of the interest I had in doing this was also to do music that wasn't based on electric guitar, which I had been doing a lot of before this. It was fun to play some other instruments and see where that took me. And to arrange vocal harmonies. That was also new to me.

3.You also have experience working with other genres with your other bands or projects, how would you compare the music of 'Naturale' to your other musical endeavors?

It's quieter than other things I have done. That's for sure. That gives you new opportunities. One thing is that the lyrics come more into focus which is nice. It has been very interesting to be able to have people be able to hear what you are singing about. Other than that I think it actually is not that different from other things I have been involved with. The looseness of the music and the focus on drones and repetition is something that exists in other things I have done for sure. I like music with a certain looseness.

4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects you have explored so far with this project?

When I recorded the last album I was far out in the swedish countryside in the middle of winter. I live in the city so the darkness and the sounds that came from the woods had an effect on me. It has a lot to do with the feelings of dread that I had moving out into the darkness when I had to. I also related these feelings to winter depression and tried to put a positive spin on it. Coming to terms with the darkness is in a way the main theme. When I was writing the songs I was recording at the same time and when I came to the point where I would have to record vocals I would write the lyrics pretty quickly. It felt like they just came to me and as far as I recall I haven't changed anything. The lyrics are about the effect that the darkness has on people and how there is solace to find in nature. Especially fire. Because honestly the whole b-side of the record is about fire. The last song is a sort of seduction written from the point of view of the fire itself. The topic of the next record will be bureaucracy. Consultancy, ring binders, being trapped in the system. That kind of thing.   

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Naturale'?

In music notation there is a sign that cancels previous sharps and flats on a note. It looks like this: ♮. I felt like the way I was doing music, when I started the project, was musical ideas slowly dissolving and felt this would be a good descriptor. If you look at the physical releases of the things I have done there are also a lot of alchemical signs. In alchemy there is the very concrete practice of dissolving different materials in different liquids but there is also the idea of the individual dissolving into the soul of the world (Anima Mundi). I think the idea of music connecting you to everything in the world is beautiful and this is also part of the meaning. It feels kind of wrong to over explain all of this. It is not very important to understand this, but it is part of the underlying idea.

    

6.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

I just over explained all of the symbols. The photo on the front was taken by Sven from Svensk Psych Aften who helped a lot with this release. Not only did he help put it out, he also helped give me the confidence to put it out and provided feedback that made the songs better. When my original idea for a cover fell through I asked him if he had some photos. He has a cabin in Sweden and he told me that this is a photo taken from the field where he picks magic mushrooms. That has nothing to do with why I used it but it is funny. I like the look of this old barn. It fits the feel of the record nicely.

7.On the studio albums you record everything by yourself but have experience working with other musicians, do you prefer to work solo?

It is fun to record on your own. I can work very intensely that way. Write and record at the same time, and that way do a song in a day. The next record will feature some of the people from the live band I have been performing with. This makes it take a little longer but hopefully it will be worth it. I also love playing with others. Having your own band can feel kind of lonely sometimes.

8.The last album was released through 4 different labels, can you tell us a little bit more about the labels you had worked with on this release?

I already talked a little about Sven. He was very important for this album being released. Yoshiwara Collective, I think, is run by a few people but the person I was in contact with was Danny Angus who has also been very helpful and has introduced me to a lot of interesting music. They are based in Belfast which is a place I have never been, but they have put out some music that is similar to that of Naturale. United Bible Studies for instance. Danny was also very supportive with the album and has probably done the most to spread it. It seems like he has connections all over the world. Vinyltrolden (now Vinyltroll Records) is Manne who is a frequent collaborator and has been very active the last few years mostly with doom, hardcore and post-rock though. Virkelighedsfjern is my own label.

9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of drone, psychedelic and folk music?

I haven't felt much of a reaction from folk music people but I also have more of a history with the other groups. In general the reaction has been good. People have reacted positively to the record and to the live performances that have been very different because of the musicians involved. I think people like the vibe of the music; both some of the very slow moving songs and the more lyrically focussed. I always invite people to sit down and all of the band members always sit down too. This helps to support a relaxed environment that gives people the chance to dive into it. It is very introverted music and people seem to vibe with that which makes me happy. The record also seems to be living its own life out there. LIke you reaching out to me one and a half years after the release. It makes me happy to think that people still engage with it and that new people listen to it and like it.

10.Where do you see yourself heading into as a musician during the future?

I want to keep making things and I am getting more and more into collaborating with other bands and artists. I recently did an album with a band called The Plant X Izumisan Ensemble who play dark ambient. It is both nice to play with others and to talk to others about the music I, or they, or we are making. Just like doing this interview it is nice to have a moment to reflect on what it is that I am doing. It is good to have it put into words. In terms of the music that I am working on, the new material has a bit more tightness to it. The songs are a little more controlled and shorter. The elements are basically the same except for a few songs that feature drums in a more prominent role. I am also working on new material with GAIA, Solens Folk and Lucid Grave which are all bands where I mainly play electric guitar.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

The stoner and doom scene of the late 00's and early 10's along with the kraut-rock scene of the 60's and 70's are probably the biggest influences on what I do and have done. I mentioned Faust in the beginning but bands like Suma, Toner Low, Harvey Milk, Hebosagil, Boris, Neu! and Harmonia have definitely influenced my way of playing guitar and writing music. I also find a lot of inspiration in the early industrial bands like Einstuzende Neubauten, Coil and Throbbing Gristle which are all bands I have been listening to recently. I have also been listening a lot to 90's sludge especially Toadliquor and Gasp and 80's noise rock like No Trend. Something a little newer that I have been listening to is the hip hop collective Griselda, apparently also known as dad rap.

  Naturale  are  a  solo  project  from  Denmark  that  plays  a  mixture  of  drone,  psychedelic  and  folk  music  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2023  album  "Meditation  Over  Morket"  which  was  released  as  a  joint  effort  between  Yoshiwara  Collective,  Svensk  Psych  Aften,  Vinyltroll  Records  and  Virkelighedsfjern.

  Field  recordings  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  clean  chants  and  percussion  style  instruments  a  few  seconds  later.  Drones  are  also  utilized  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  while  the  acoustic  guitars  also  bring  in  elements  of  folk  music  and  the  vocals  are  also  done  in  more  of  a  melodic  style.

  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  psychedelic  sounding  while  keyboards  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording.  The  songs  also  add  in  elements  of  60's  and  70's  music  with  a  more  modern  outlook  along  with  most  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  there  is  one  song  that  is  also  an  instrumental  as  well  as  one  song  also  introducing  programmed  beats  onto  the  album.

  Naturale  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  drone,  psychedelic  and  folk  music  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  his  own.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Danish  and  cover  the  human  relationship  with  nature  and  the  effect  the  darkness  of  winter  has  on  the  human  psyche.

  In  my  opinion  Naturale  is  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  drone,  psychedelic  and  folk  music  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  solo  project.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Morket"  and  "Ilden".  8  out  of  10.

Pirkan/Holy Amnesia/Sun & Moon Records/2022 Full Length Review

 

  Pirkan  are  a  band  from  Hungary  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  goes  for  a  mixture  of  drone,  folk,  psychedelic,  experimental  and  world  music  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2022  album  "Holy  Amnesis"  which  will  be  released  on  September  16th  by  Sun  &  Moon  Records.

  Whispers  and  drones  start  off  the  album  while  folk  instruments  are  also  utilized  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording.  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  experimental  sounding  along  with  some  percussion  also  being  utilized  at  times  and  the  folk  instruments  also  add  in  some  ethnic  and  world  music  touches.

  Most  of  the  tracks  are  also  instrumentals  while  some  of  the  songs  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  At  times  the  music  also  goes  into  more  of  a  psychedelic  direction  along  with  some  synths  and  programmed  also  being  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording  as  well  as  one  song  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  clear  vocals  and  each  track  also  sounds  very  different  from  each  other,  throat  singing  can  also  be  heard  briefly.

  On  this  recording  Pirkan  takes  drone,  folk,  psychedelic,  experimental  and  world  music  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  very  diverse  recording.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  while t he  ylrics  are  written  in  Hungarian  and  cover  shamanism  themes.

  In  my  opinion this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Pirkan  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  drone,  folk,  psychedelic,  experimental  and  world  music,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "An  Offering"  and  "Light  Resonance".  8 out  of  10.

Kirril Interview

 1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit more about yourself and your musical project?

It's a mix of different influences, most of it would probably be best described as industrial. I gravitate a lot towards industrial, distorted, psychedelic and weird music. It is a large part of what I do.

I don't tend to stick to one genre though, I switch from project to project: I need to keep on doing things that are new for me.

2.In the last few years you have also released a great amount of material, how would you describe your musical progress over the years?

Things are a bit less lo-fi then they used to be, and I am also constantly pushing to keep making things darker, weirder. In the beginning things were very focussed on the dance floor on mostly illegal parties, after that I started studying music for 5 years and things got a bit more complex and more and more my own thing over the years.

The influences of the parties of the early days have begun to creep in again lately, combining it with the sound / body of work I have developed so far.

3.You also have a background with illegal parties and living in squats, what impact does this have on the musical style that you play?

The atmosphere of those surroundings and the way of life that comes with it influenced the sound of my music a lot and still often does.

In the very early years, uncertainty of how long we had electricity and could stay somewhere also made me learn how to make things fast and be perfectionistic about the right things and make sure it worked because it would be hard to change later.

I made a lot of quite minimalist tracks and loops, but making sure every sound worked and was the best I could make it. Then making larger collage type things out of those tracks in livesets.

Us throwing regular parties meant I could check well if something worked in large halls and such,/ got a reaction out of a crowd very early and consistently. That time learned me a lot overall

4.A lot of your song themes are inspired by dystopian topics and turbulent nightlife, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in these topics?

It's what I see around me, it connects to how we live.

5.In the last few years you also have released a great amount of material, do you spend a great amount of your time writing and creating music?

Yes, I have worked at it almost every day for the past 17 years. That could be for just an hour or entire days.

6.With this project you record everything by yourself, are you open to working with other musicians or do you prefer to work solo?

I work a lot on my own, but also have put out different collaborations over the years. From one on one collaborations to me leading small teams of different diverse artists.

The last three years were more solo work, but I would like to collaborate more in the future again and have been taking some steps towards that lately. trying some things with different people.

7.What are some of the best shows that you have played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

I have done different kinds of performances over the years. From illegal party´s in dark hallways and basements, to commercial clubs to brightly lit art gallery type environments. Sometimes with a laptop and some midi gear,everything tightly controlled and prepared. Sometimes also with just hardware, modular synths, drumcomputers and cheap guitar pedals and such, more freeform. Lately I have been moving more into combining those two different approaches.

I stil feel more comfortable in dark rooms/ larger halls where I can project large visuals, so that the focus is more on the music and the visual art than on me.

8.What are some of the record labels have you worked with on the releases so far?

In October I put out a self-titled cassette album on Tartarus Records, A Dutch metal label that has been getting more and more into releasing industrial stuff lately. On the 7th of January my Album Nocturnal was released on Revok Records, an industrial techno label based in London and Tokyo.

Most of my work before that was self released and promoted, in 2012 the American darkpsy label Anomalistic Records spread my EP Hardwired quite a bit, which was cool.

9.On a worldwide level, how has the reaction been to your music by fans of industrial, noise and other underground forms of music?

It's hard to tell sometimes this year because so much is just online, and so many events having stopped with the pandemic and all.

I´ve read some great reactions online though.

There's been some good responses in the industrial techno scene.

I was quite surprised to find my release on several release of the week lists of some notable metal blogs/ podcasts. That felt great. My music is far from metal but I do feel a connection to it/ attracted to it, especially to the really dark stuff. It´s a great scene.

It would be great to do some crossover stuff with some metal artists some day.

10.Where do you see yourself heading into as a musician during the future?

Things are going to get darker. And a lot of it more danceable, I am tired of that not being possible (at events), I miss it, it's been enough.

I also have some more slow noise/ industrial projects coming up though that are going to get very dark and weird.

I have a lot of new releases coming up, experimenting in how I can expand my body of work.

I am also working on developing more of a visual world around my music, making that a part of my live performances.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

I am listening an awful lot to The Weeknd to be honest, which a lot of people probably wouldn't expect. I like the world he created around his music. Also a lot of Lil Durk lately (not kiddin here)

On the other side of the spectrum I have been into more extreme noise/ experimental music like Prurient, Nurse With Wound and I´ve been listening to some stuff from the Deathbed Tapes label lately. There's some really great noise on there.

I listen to and am inspired by a quite wide spectrum of music. I like different ways of creating worlds with audio, either with or without vocalists.

I like it when underground and mainstream influences overlap and something special comes out of that. Artists that really develop their own thing.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Not really at the moment, I think I said most of what I could think of now.

Kirril/Self Titled/Tartarus Records/2021 Cassette Review

 

  Kirril  are  a  solo  project  from  the  Netherlands  that  plays  a  mixture  of  rhythmic  noise,  dark  industrial,  psychedelic,  down  tempo  and  hip  hop  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  self  titled  2021  album  which  was  released  on  cassette  by  Tartarus  Records.

  Dark  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  noises  a  few  seconds  later  while  the  music  also  mixes  in  a  lot  of  programmed  beats.  Elements  of  industrial  are  also  utilized  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  as  well  as  the  music  also  adding  some  touches  of  underground  dance  music.

  Synths  can  also  be  heard  in  the  background  at  times  while  all  of  the  songs  also  stick  to  an  instrumental  direction.  At  times  the  music  also  captures  the  bass  sound  of  hip  hop  along  with  all  of  the  tracks  also  sounding  very  different  from each  other  and  some  songs  also  mix  in  psychedelic  and  down  tempo  influences.      

  Kirril  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  rhythmic  noise,  dark  industrial,  psychedelic,  down  tempo  and  hip  hop  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  his  own  as  well  as  keeping  everything  instrumental  while  the  production  sounds  very  dark.

ZAÄAR/Magická Džungl’a/I, Voidhanger Records/WV Sorcerer/Homo Sensibilis Sounds/2021 Double Album Review

 

  ZAÄAR  are  a  band  from  Belgium  that  plays  a  mixture  of  experimental,  drone,  space  ambient,  free  jazz,  psychedelic  and  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  double  album  "Magická Džungl’a"  which  will  be  released  in  November  as  a  joint  effort  between  I,  Voidhanger  Records,  WV Sorcerer,  and    Homo Sensibilis Sounds.

  Atmospheric  sounding  drones  start  off  the  album  while  all  of t he  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  Ritualistic  sounding  bells  can  also be  heard  briefly  along  with  some  whispered  chants  also  being  added  into  the  background  briefly  and  after  awhile  saxophones  and  elements  of  free  form  jazz  can  also  be  heard.

  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  experimental  and  avant  garde  sounding  while  the  percussion  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  tribal  feeling.  A  variety  of  many  different  style  of  wind  instruments  and  flutes  can  also  be  heard  and  also  adds  in  some  exotic  and  ethnic  touches  and  the  music  also  has  its  psychedelic  moments.

  When  electric  bass  guitars  are  utilized  they  also  add  in  touches  of  doom  metal  along  with  the  music  also  adding  spaced  ambient  sounds  into  some  parts  of  the  recording  as  well  as  each  track  also  sounding  very  different  from  each  other.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  song  themes  focus  on  Drugs, Magick  and  Scientific  approaches  to  consciousness.  

  In  my  opinion  ZAÄAR  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  experimental,  drone,  space  ambient,  free  jazz,  psychedelic  and  doom  metal   and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Respiration  Aérobie"  and  "Grande  Oxydation".  8  out  of  10.

Wilderness Hymnal/Duncan Evans/Until Liars Fear You/Trepanation Recordings/2021 Split Album Review

 

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  album  between  Netherlands  Wilderness  Hymnal  and  United  Kingdom's  Duncan  Evans  called  "Until  Liars  Fear  You"  which  will  be  released  in  November  by  Trepanation  Recordings  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Wilderness  Hymnal  a  solo  artist  that  plays  a  mixture  of  drone,  post  metal,  folk,  psychedelic,  chamber  music  and  glacial  electronics.

  His  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  clean  vocals  and  atmospheric  sounding  drones  while  one  track  also  introduces  clean  guitars  onto  his  side  of  the  recording.  All  of  the  drum  beats  are  also  programmed  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  elements  of  post  metal  can  also  be  heard  at  times.

  Spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly  along  with  some  music  also  adding  in  some  electronic  and  psychedelic  touches  at  times.  All  of  his  tracks  also  sound  very  different  from  each  other  as  well  as  the  percussion  also  giving  the  music  more  of  a  tribal  feeling  when  they  are  utilized  and  some  songs  also  add  in  stringed  instruments.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  lyrics  cover  overcoming  violence  and  escaping  grief  with  some  alchemical  touches.

  In  my  opinion  Wilderness  Hymnal  is  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  drone,  post  metal, folk,  psychedelic,  chamber  music  and  glacial  electronics  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  solo  project.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "I  Buried  My  Teeth"  and  "Three  tempers".

  Next  up  is  Duncan  Evans  a  solo  artist  that  plays  a  mixture  of  dark  folk  and  post  punk.

  His  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  post  punk  and  new  wave  style  synths  while  the  vocals  are  all  done  in  a  clean  style.  All  of  the  drum  beats  are  also  programmed  along  with  some  electric  and  bass  guitars  also  being  utilized  at  times as  well  as  the  screams  also  adding  in  touches  of  black  metal  and  industrial  when  they  are  utilized.

  The  music  also  has  its  experimental  moments  along  with  all  of  the  tracks  also  sounding  very  different  from  each  other.  Elements  of  folk  music  can  also  be  heard  at  times  as  well  as  the  music  also  capturing  a  very  melancholic  atmosphere  and  acoustic  guitars  and  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  on  the  closing  track.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  lyrics  cover  overcoming  violence  and  escaping  grief  with  some  influences  of  classic  literature.    

  In  my  opinion  Duncan  Evans  is  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  dark  folk  and  post  punk  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  solo  project.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Deadheading"  and  "Mouse  Mask".

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  i  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  drone,  post  metal,  psychedelic,  folk  and  electronic  music.  8  out  of  10.

Laüstic/La Canzone del Cefaloforo/Cursed Monk Records/2021 EP Review

 

    Laüstic  are  a  band  from  New  York  that  plays  a  mixture  of  experimental,  noise  idm  and  extreme  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  ep  "La  Canzone  del  Cefaloforo"  which  was  released  by  Cursed  Monk  Records.

  Experimental  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  clean  chants  a  few  seconds  later  while  the  music  also  has  its  avant  garde  moments.  Idm  and  industrial  style  beats  are  also  added  into  some  parts  of  the  recording  as  well  as  some  elements  of  noise  also  being  utilized  at  times  and  the  keyboards  also  add  in  touches  of  ambient.

  Most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  semi  clean  electric  guitars  can  also  be  heard  at  times.  Vocals  are  done  in  mostly  a  clean  style  along  with  some  spoken  word  parts  also  being  added  into  some  parts  of  the  recording  as  well  as  some  black  metal  screams  also  being  utilized  briefly.

  All  of  the  drum  beats  are  also  programmed  along  with  each  track  also  sounding  very  different  from  each  other.  A  touch  of  psychedelia  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  when  the  music  finally  speeds  up  a  small  amount  of  melodic  riffing,  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes.

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band? 

1.Kalabrian Syndrome is an instrumental trio (guitar, bass, drums) that blends in heavy rock, psychedelic, drone, ambient and noise elements always in a dynamic frame, that uses all sort of patterns to deliver a story behind every song. 

2.So far you have released a n ep, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style that you went for on the recording? 

2.We wanted it to be straight forward ,no polishing, no editing ,no sort of sound design trickery that the rest of the music business had fed us .So ,we went to the studio played the songs live ,hit the rec button, choose which version of the song works best. Did some mixing and mastering and there you have it.

 3.So far all of your music has been instrumental, are you open to using vocals on future releases? 

3.Really don’t know, Voice is a just another instrument right? With one major difference….the frequencies that produces mean something….there are words….so it has to be well tuned and really have something interesting to say….difficult task. If the right person ,that can fill that role comes our way, we re happy to try it. 

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Kalbrian Syndrome'?

 4.Its just and Inside joke between the band and friends ,so as the titles of the songs. 

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the ep cover? 

5.It is a photo taken in our home studio in the middle off a session by our friend kellaki. 

6.Has the band done any live shows or open to the idea? 

6.Of course we are open to the idea ,but covid-19 had other plans. 

7.The ep was released by 'Submersion Records'. how did you get in contact with this label? 7.Submersion Records is a known label in the Underground scene in Thessaloniki and good friends of us. 

8.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of experimental and heavier genres?

 8.its been great so far, we love the fact that different people have different favourite track on the EP. 

9.When can we expect a full length and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future? 

9.Really don’t know, we are constantly writing new material, we have some very exciting tracks so far, we experimenting with some new gear ,new sounds. We would like to have a full length album out somewhere in the beginning of 2022 

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays? 

10.We are 3 very different people ,each and everyone brings his own thing to the table., and I think that is pretty obvious if you listen to the EPI. Now if the topic comes to bands,9 out 10 it will lead to a major pointless argument.

 11.What are some of your non musical interests? 

11.We play for fun …we don’t pay bills from music. All of us have day jobs.. the little time that we can spent in our day for fooling around goes to the band.

  Bobban  Risttevski  is  a  solo  artist  from  Macedonia  and  Occupied  Head  is  a  solo  project  from  Germany  and  together  they  team  up  to  create  a  mixture  of  drone,  ambient,  psychedelic  and  electroacoustic  music  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  collaboration  album  "The  Secret  Teachers"  which  was  released  by  Attenuation  Circuit.

  Atmospheric  soundscapes  and  drones  start  off  the  album  while  the  music  also  adds  in  a  great  amount  of  field  recordings.  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  avant  garde  and  experimental  sounding  along  with  the  music  being  all  instrumental  and  when  synths  are  utilized  they  also  bring  in  elements  of  ambient.

  Most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  programmed  beats.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  great  amount  of  electroacoustic  sounds  along  with  each  song  also  sounding  very  different  from  each  other  and  the  music  also  has  its  psychedelic  moments.

  Boibban  Risttevski  and  Occupied  head  team  up  together  and  bring  in a   mixture  of  avant  garde,  experimental,  ambient,  drone,  field  recordings,  electroacoustic  music  and  psychedelic  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  song  themes  focus  on  Wicca,  Alchemy,  Tibetan  and  Egyptian  Mysticism.

The Joy Of Nature/Goddies/2021 Compilation EP Review

 

  Portugal's  The  Joy  Of  nature  have  returned  with  a  compilation  which  continues  their  mixture  of  experimental  and  neo-folk  form  their  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2021  ep  "Goodies"  which  consists  of  unreleased  and  compilation  tracks.

  A  very  dark  and  experimental  sound  starts  off  the  ep  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  When  acoustic  guitars  are  utilized  they  also b ring  in  elements  of  neo  folk  along  with t he  vocals  being  done  mostly in  a  clean  style  and  the  music  also  adds  in  some  ambient  style  soundscapes.

  The  acoustic  guitars  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  finger  picking  and  full  chords  while  percussions  can  also b e  heard  in  the  background.  The  music  also  has  its  psychedelic  moments  along  with  the  tracks  also  mixing  in  flutes  and  other  folk  instruments  and  the  guitar  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

  On  these  tracks  The  Joy  Of  Nature  brings  in  a  mixture  of  neo-folk,  psychedelia,  experimental  and  ambient  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness,  nature  and  esoteric  themes.

  Emerge  are  a  solo  project  from  Germany  that  has been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  does  2  different  live  sets  one  with  Limited  Liability  Sounds  and  another  with  Gerald  Fiebig  and  brings  in  a  mixture  of  experimental,  drone,  ambient,  psychedelic  and  improv  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  collaboration  album  which  was  released  by  Attenuation  Circuit.

  Atmospheric  sounding  drones  start  off  the  album  while  the  music  also  gets  very  experimental  sounding  at  times.  Field  recordings  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  live  sets  along  with  some  psychedelic  style  soundscapes  also  being  utilized  at  times  and  all  of  the  music  also  sticks  to  an  instrumental  direction.

  All  of  the  music  is  also  improvised  while  the  music  also  gets  more  diverse  sounding  as  the  album  progresses.  Synths  are  also  introduced  on  the  second  track  and  also  takes  the  music  into  more  of  an  ambient  direction  along  with  the  music  also  keeping  a  very  avant  garde  style  as  well  as  incorporating  a  more  lo-fi  atmosphere.

  On  this  recording  Emerge  mixes  his  style  with  Limited  Liability  Sounds  on  one  set  and  Gerald  Fiegig  on  another  set  to  create  a  very  diverse  sounding  recording  while  the  production  sounds  very  dark.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  collaboration  between  Emerge,  Limited  Liability  Sounds  and  Gerald  Fiegig  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  ambient,  drone,  experimental,  improv  and  psychedelia  you  should  check  out  this  album.  8  out  of  10.

 Kalabrian Syndrome  are  a  band  from  Greece  that  plays  an  instrumental  mixture  experimental  and  stoner  metal  with  some  elements  of  ambient,  drone,  psychedelic,  blues  and  jazz  rock  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  titled  2020   ep  which  was  released   by  Submersion  Records.

  Viviankrist  are  a  solo  project  from  Norway  that  plays  a  mixture  of  ambient,  drone,  experimental,  harsh  noise  and  psychedelic  music  and  this  is  a  review  her  live  2018  album  which  will be  re-issued  as  a  4  tape  cassette  box  in  November  by  Ritual  Productions.

  Programmed beats  start  off the  album  along  with  some  power  electronic  and  industrial  elements  a  few  seconds  later  before  adding  in  some  harsh  noises  which  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  the  recording.  Screams  can  also  be  heard  in  the  background  at  times  along  with  the  music  also having  its  experimental  moments.

  Synths  and  demonic  growls  are  also  added  into  some  parts  of  the  recording  along  with  some  touches  of  ambient.  The  music  also  adds  in  a  great  amount  of  diversity  along  with  the  music  also  adding  in  some  psychedelic  and  60's style  science  fiction  soundtrack  movie  sounds  at  times  and  the  second  track  also  brings  in  some  electronic  drones.

Pirkan/Self Titled/Sun & Moon Records/2020 CD Review

 

  Pirkan  are  a  band  from  Hungary  that  plays  a  mixture  of  drone,  psychedelic  and  neo-folk  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  titled  2020  album  which  was  released  by  Sun  &  Moon  Records.

  Nature  sounds  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  acoustic  guitars  a  few  seconds  later  which  also  introduces  elements  of  neo-folk  onto  the  recording.  The  vocals  are  a  mixture  of  clean  male  and  female  vocals  along  with  some  Jew's  Harp's  also  being  added  into  some  parts  of  the  music  and  the  songs  also  mix  in  a  great  amount  of  percussion.

  The  songs  also  mix  in  a  great  amount  of  Hungarian  style  folk  instruments  while  shamanistic  style  chants  also  give  the  music  more  of  a  ritualistic  feeling  when  they  are  utilized.  A  couple  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  as  well  as  the  music  also  getting  very  tribal  sounding  at  times.

  A  couple  of  different  flutes  are  also  brought  into  the  songs  which  also  gives  the  recording  more  diversity,  Cinematic  sounding  drones  and  synths  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  album  as  well  as  all  of  the  tracks  also  sounding  very  different  from  each  other,  when  spoken  word  parts  are  utilized  briefly  they  also  enhance  the  ritualistic  side  of  the  music  and  the  songs  also  mix  in  some  elements  of  Mongolian  folk  music  which  can  also  be  heard  in  the  throat  singing.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Hungarian  and  cover  folklore  themes.

Mothra/Doom Engine/Cold Spring/2020 Full Length Review

  Mothra  are  a  band  from  Japan  that  plays  a  mixture  of  harsh  noise  and  death  industrial  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2020  album  "Doom  Engine"  which  will  be  released  on  August  20th  by  Cold  Spring.

  Industrial  style  beats  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  harsh  noises  and  power  electronics  a  few  seconds  later.  The  music  also  adds  in  a  decent  amount  of  junk  percussion  and  home  made  instruments  while  distorted  screams  and  shots  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  the  recording.

  Acoustic  guitars  can  also  be  heard  briefly  while  the  bass  also  gives  the  music  more  heaviness  and  brutality.  All  of  the  drum  beats  are  also  programmed  along  with  the  music  also  showing  some  influences  of  80's  era  experimental  and  industrial  but  mixed  in  with  a  more  modern  brutality  as  well  as  the  music  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  rhythmic  patterns.

  All  of  the  tracks  sound  very  different  from  each  other  along  with  a  couple  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  at  times  a  touch  of  psychedelia  can  also  be  heard  as   well  as  some  electric  guitars  also  being  heard  briefly.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  lyrics  cover  death,  doom,  darkness  and  violence  themes.

  A  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  instrumentals  while  the  music  also  gets  very  progressive  at  times  along  with  a  great  amount  of  psychedelic  elements  as  well  as  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  as  well  as  some  tracks  also  adding  in  clean  vocals,  as  the  album  progresses  spoke  word  parts,  water  and  nature  sounds  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  the  album  closes  with  a  cover  of  Le  Orme's  "II  Vento,  La  Notte,  II  Ciele".

  On  this  recording  Grandalf's  Owl  creates  more  of  a  progressive  and  psychedelic  style  of  ambient  rock  as  expanding  on  the  sound  he  introduced  on  the  ep  and  the  production  sounds  very  professional.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Gandalf's  Owl  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  progressive  and  psychedelic  ambient  rock,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Winterfell"  "Garmobozia"  and  "Coming  Home".  8  out  of  10.

Iterum Nata Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the musical project since the recording of the new album?

I have been working quite closely with Jussi Pohjanen, the stellar artist who drew the cover art for the album. There will be a small batch of screen prints made out of the artwork available as soon as the album is out. Also, I've been quite busy writing press-releases, newsletters etc. Luckily the record label has helped me a lot with this stuff - kudos to Inverse Records! I have also written some new material, which is...let's call it Qliphothic!

2.In December you have a new album coming out, what are some of the things you feel you have done different musically with this recording that you where not able to do on your previous releases?

When I started to record the first album I had no clue what kind of material I would end up with. With "The Course of Empire" it was much clearer; I already knew the studio and the equipment, and I had a certain musical style in my mind. One could say that this album continues where the first one ended.

Musically the material is a lot darker and not so serene. There are loads of percussion's, which gives the record a certain shamanistic twist. In the first album everything was played by me but in The Course of Empire there's also some featuring musicians (another kudos!).

3.The lyrics on the new album cover Hermetic Philosophy, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in this Western Esoteric Path?

Every song in The Course of Empire has its own correspondence in the seven Hermetic Principles. Hermeticism itself is such a massive concept, that I like to use it as a hypernym which bends over several Western Esoteric schools; it has influenced Rosicrucians, Gnostics, Kabbalists, Freemasons and later for example Thelemites. So there are loads of influences from all of these traditions in the album as well.

4.On your previous album you also covered a lot of Crowley and Thelemic themes, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in the works of Crowley and also do you have an interest in other occultists from the Golden Dawn era or others that expanded on Crowley's teachings such as Kenneth Grant or A.O Spare?

The first album revolved around Thelemic Qabbalah and indeed Crowley's work was heavily present in the lyrics. Crowley was, and still is, a very controversial man, but his influence in the modern Western Esotericism is worthy of respect. One could say that he brought the old traditions into the modern age - even if it was over a hundred years ago. Grant, A.O.S. and others have continued Crowley's work and renewed the Western Current with their own philosophies.

There are many other interesting people in the Western Esoteric field, like Dee, Levi, Blavatsky, Bardon, Jung etc., but in my esoteric studies I try to focus on the deeper philosophy behind these people instead of the people themselves. There's always a risk that one starts to worship another person, or finds himself following someone else's path.

5.What are some of the other esoteric paths that you have an interest in that you have not covered with your music yet?

Maybe some nature-related traditions or Eastern mysticism. You never know the theme of the next album!

We have to keep in mind, that in the end you can call the "Tao" with thousand different names, but it will always be the same!

6.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Iterum Nata'?

It's Latin for "born again". Each moment we are born again, and hopefully as a better version than the previous. Also, these albums are kind of an initiations for me, and a true initiate is always born again after the ceremony.

7.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork on the new album cover?

As said before, it is drawn by Jussi Pohjanen who also made the artwork on the first album. In the cover picture there are references to practices such as Qabbalah, Goetia, Thelema, Tarot, Hermeticism and many more. You should explore it and see what you can find in it!

8.With this project you record everything by yourself but have also worked with full line ups in the past, how would you compare the two?

They are two totally different things. When I'm doing stuff alone, I don't need to care about the schedules or what other people think about the takes. Although at some point it would be better to have a producer who tells me when to stop; for example the vocals can be really hard for me to record by myself.

Also, in other line-ups I am mainly just a guitarist. So I just nail the guitar parts and that's it. In Iterum Nata I need to build everything from a scratch. When I look at the empty project on the computer, it feels like I have a goddamn mountain to climb. But once I get started, it's actually pretty painless!

9.The new album is coming out on 'Inverse Records' a record that is mostly known for metal, do you feel your adding something different music wise to this label?

Inverse has treated me really well and I'm super thankful for those guys about everything - I hope Iterum Nata gives them something in exchange! I'm sure The Course of Empire will also appeal on the metal audience because of the dark occult themes and the bleak aesthetics.

10.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your recordings by fans of folk and occult music?

It has been good, but I'm still just a small name in the scene. The first album was self-published and not well distributed at all, but now when there's a real label behind me, I'm sure lots of new people will hear my music. Hopefully the album gets lots of feedback and reviews!

11.Can you tell us a little bit more about the other bands or musical projects that you are a part of or where a part of in the past?

I have played in dozens of bands from children's music to extreme metal, but nowadays my main focus outside of Iterum Nata is in Hexvessel, The Aeon and King Satan.

I have been a fan of Hexvessel for years and I was so happy when they asked me to join them at the beginning of the year. It is kind of psychedelic folk-rock with a twist of nature mysticism. There's a beautiful new album coming out next year!

The Aeon is a 7-piece dark folk band from my previous hometown, Oulu. We have released one album, "The Songs of the Great Beast", where all the lyrics are by Aleister Crowley. We have been writing some new material and the second album is coming at some point.

King Satan is musically something totally different; it is super provocative and aggressive industrial metal. The lyrics are filled with dark occult themes, once again!

12.Where do you see yourself heading into as a musician in the future?

This is a question which only the reborn future-me can answer! I wouldn't want to become a huge mega-star - I'm happy as long as I can create and play music that feels like my own. For me music is the main way to express myself.

13.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

There are so many of them. I literally grew up with music, for both of my parents are really musical and we had loads of recordings and instruments at home. I have always loved progressive music, as well as anything that's made with feeling. Unfortunately I don't listen to music that much anymore, guess I'm too busy with my own projects. Nevertheless, there are these old favourites, including Pink Floyd, Opeth, Ulver and Camel that I always seem to get back to. Also, the old jazz classics such as Miles Davis' Kind of Blue and Freddie Hubbard's Straight Life keep on appearing to my playlist.

14.What are some of your non musical interests?

I do taiji few times a week and then there are the esoteric studies and practices. I am a social counselor in my profession and I work with the disabled to earn a living.
