Audoynaud Interview

 

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?

1.      We are AUDOYNAUD, a duo of two brothers. Romain writes the lyrics and sings, and Pierre composes the music. Together, we make a French dark folk that is deep, intimate, and adventurous.

2.In March you had released your first full length, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style that you went for on the recording?

1.      We released Hyperboréen in 2024. It’s a dark folk album where the voice and lyrics play a central role. The record also leans toward dark ambient, building textured soundscapes with electro-acoustic techniques. We mainly use acoustic instruments, recorded in our own studio and edited by ourselves.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects you have explored so far with the music?

1.      The album is called Hyperboréen. We imagined it as a journey into an imaginary Far North. The natural elements represent feelings and emotions; it is an invitation to introspection and silent communion.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Audoynaud'?

1.      It is our family name, which we also share with our older sister Charlotte, who creates the visuals for the project, and our younger sister Mathilde, who is always a source of inspiration.

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

1.      It is a photograph taken by Charlotte Audoynaud with her medium format film camera, in the area around our studio in Puisaye (Burgundy). This is where our music comes to life.

6.Currently there are only 2 members in the band, are you open to expanding the line up or do you prefer to remain a duo?

1.      AUDOYNAUD is a project in collaboration with many musicians we have met along the way. We like to see the studio as a hub, a center, around which many artists and musicians gather.

7.On the new album you also have a few quest musicians, can you tell us a little bit more about who they are and also their contributions to the recording?

1.    They are musicians we collaborate with on various projects within our label Eaux Sombres. We invite them to come and play in the studio, and Pierre collects the recorded material. From this material, he arranges the sounds like an electro-acoustic composer. On Hyperboréen we have collaborated with Evelyne Coen on oboe and English horn, Jean-Marc Ladet on violin, Michel Granon on accordion, and David Michelet and Léo Ducatez on nylon-string guitar. We have also worked remotely with the guitarist Rai Castells, who is based in Spain.

8.Can you tell us a little bit more about your label 'Eaux Sombres'??

It is a label born from the desire to create, together with the studio, a space for free, experimental, and improvised music. It is a project rooted in a specific place, and it aims to bring together unique artists.

9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of the more underground and experimental genres of music?

10.What is going on with some of the other musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part of?

Pierre Audoynaud is involved in the electro-organic improvisation group ReBis, whose album Sans motif apparent was the label’s second release. He is also working on several upcoming projects that will be released through the label.

11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

We have two projects in progress. One is an album reworking songs by Current93, and the other is a close collaboration with the guitarist David Michelet.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

As for styles, we can talk about dark folk, doom, drone, noise, experimental music, and electro-acoustic music. For composing Hyperboréen, we were inspired by Current93, Swans, Asmus Tietchens, Françis Dhomont, and the artists on the Shelter Press label.

Audoynaud/Hyberboreen/Eaux Sombres/2025 Full Length Review

 

  Audoynaud  are  a  duo  from  France  that  plays  a  mixture  of  dark  folk,  drone,  doom  metal  and  electro-acoustic  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2025  album  "Hyberboreen"  which  was  released  by  Eaux  Sombres.

  

   Avant  garde  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  before  adding  in  some  stringed  and  folk  music  instruments  a  few  seconds  later.  Vocals  are  done  in  more  of  a  clean  style  while  the  recording  also  adds  in  a  great  amount  of  drones  along  with  some  whispers  also  being  utilized  briefly  and  acoustic  guitars  are  also  added  on  some  of  the  songs.

  

  Organic  sounds  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  the  album  while  some  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  At  times  the  more  distorted  side  of  the  music  and  electric  guitars  also  adding  in  a  touch  of  doom  metal  along  with  each  track  also  taking  the recording  into  a  different  direction  as  well  as  keeping  true  to  a  dark  folk  style,  spoken  words  are  also  added  on  the  closing  song.

  

  Audoynaud  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  dark  folk,  drone,  doom  metal  and  electro-acoustic  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their own.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  lyrics  cover  poetic  themes.

  

  In  my  opinion  Audoynaud  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  dark  folk,  drone,  doom  metal  and  electro-acoustic  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  duo.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Lisiere"  and  "Granite".  8  out  of  10.

Margolis/Fiebig/Emerge/Tripolar Exercises/Attenuation Circuit/Pogus Productions/Gebrauchtemusik2024 Collaboration Album Review

 

  Germany's  musical  projects  Margolis,  Fiebig  and  Emerge  team  up  on  this  recording  and  go  for  a  mixture  of  drone,  electroacoustic  and  musique  concrete  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2024  album  "Tripolat  Exercises"  which  was  released  as  a  joint  effort  between  Attenuation  Circuit,  Pogus  Productions  and  Gebrauchtemusik.

  Field  recordings  start  off  the  album  before  adding  in  some  recycled  sounds  and  home  made  instruments.  Most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  music  also  has  its  experimental  and  avant  garde  moments  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  great  amount  of  drones.

  A  lot  of  the  music  is  also  improvised  while  most  of  the  music  also  sticks  to  more  of  an  instrumental  direction.  All  of  the  songs  also  have  a  different  musical  style  to  them  along  with  the  album  also  adding  in  an  atmospheric  touch  at  times,  voices  and  whispers  are  added  on  the  closing  track.

  Magolis,  Fiebig  and  Emrge  mix  all  3  of  their  differnet  musical  styles  together  to  create  an  album  that  takes  drone,  musique  concrete,  electroacoustic  and  field  recordings  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  something  very  different  while  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  lo-fi.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  collaboration  between  Margolis,  Fiebig  and  Emerge  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  drone,  electroacoustic  and  musique  concrete,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACSK  INCLUDE  "Man  Folded  Reality"  and  "Elephant  Muted  Factories".  8  out  of  10.

Demetrio Cecchitelli/Dwell/Dornwald Records/2021 Full Length Review

 

  Demetrio  Cecchitelli  is  a  solo  artist  from  Italy  that  plays  a  mixture  of  experimental,  avant  garde,  ambient,  electroacoustic,  glitch  and  post  rock  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2021  album  "Dwell"  which  was  released  by  Dornwald  Records.

  Ambient  style  synths  start  off  the  album  while  the  songs  also  being  in  a  great  amount  of  electronic  music  sounds  along  with  all  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  Glitches  can  also  be  heard  at  times  as  well  as  all  of  the  songs  also  sticking  to  an  instrumental   musical  direction.

  Each  track  also  sounds  very  different  from  each  other  while  some  songs  also  do  into  more  of  an  experimental  and  avant  garde  direction.  Some  of  the  tracks  also  add  in  the  more  melancholic  side  of  post  rock  along  with  all  of  the  music  also  being  improvised  and  as  the  recording  progresses  the  music  also  starts  getting  more  diverse  and  clean  guitars  are  also  added  on  the  closing  track.

  Demetrio  Cecchitelli  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  experimental,  avant  garde  ambient,  electroacoustic,  glitch  and  post  rock  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  his  own  as  well  as  keeping  everything  instrumental  while  the  production  sounds  very  dark.

 In  my  opinion  Demetrio  Cecchitelli  is  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  experimental,  avant  garde,  ambient,  electroacoustic,  glitch  and  post  rock  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  solo  project.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Dwell  I"  and  "Dwell  III".  8 out  of  10.

Moljebka Pulse/Komoku/Cyclic Law/2019 CD Review

  Moljebka  Pulse  are  a  solo  project  from  Sweden  that  plays  a  mixture  of  experimental,  drone,  field  recordings  and  electroacoustic  music  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2019  album  "Komku"  which  was  released  by  Cyclic  Law.

  A  very  experimental  and  avant  garde  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  drones  also  being  added  into  some  parts  of  the  music.  Field  recordings  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  all  of  the  songs  as  well  as  most  of  the  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  at  times  the  music  also  gets  very  atmospheric  sounding.

  All  of  the  songs  sound  very  different  from  each  other  which  also  gives  the  recording  a  lot  more  diversity.  Elements  of  electroacoustic  music  are  also  utilized  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  album  as  well  as  all  of  tracks  being  instrumentals  and  at  times  the  music  also  captures  the  atmosphere  of  the  American  Southwest.

  Moljebka  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  experimental,  drone,  field  recordings  and  electroacoustic  music  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  his  own  as  well  as  keeping  everything  instrumental  and  the  production  sounds  very  dark.

  In  my  opinion  Moljebka  Pulse  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  experimental,  drone,  field  recordings  and  electroacoustic  music  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out t his  solo  project.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "A  Reptition  Without"  and  "And  The  Farewell  To  All  that  One  has  Lost".  8  out  of  10.

Emerge/Materia/Attenuation Circuit/2019 Live Album Review

  Emerge  are  a  solo  project  from  Germany  that  has  had music  recently  reviewed  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  mixture  of  experimental,  electroacoustic,  drone,  idm,  improv  and  minimalist  music  and  this  is  a  review  of  his live  2019  album  "Materia"  which  was  released  by  Attenuation  Circuit.

  Field  recordings  start  off  the  album  while  the  live  set  is  over  30  minutes  in  length  along  with  some  voices  also  being  utilized  at  times.  A  great  amount  of  experimental  and  avant  garde  elements  can  also  be  heard  in  the  music  and  as  the  tracks  progresses  traces  of  idm  are  added  into  the  music.

  A  good  amount  of  electroacoustic  sounds  are  also  brought  into  the  live  set  along  with  some  drones  and  elements  of  electronic  music.  the  music  also  brings  in  a  great  amount  of  minimalist  structures  as  well  as  adding  in  a  great  amount  of  programmed  beats  and  all  of  the  music  is  also  composed in  an  improv style.

  On  this  recording  Emerge  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  experimental,  electroacoustic,  drone,  idm,  improv  and  minimalist  music  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  his  own  and  the  production  sounds  very  dark  with  all  of  the music  being  recorded  live.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Emerge  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  experimental,  electroacoustic,  drone,  idm,  improv  and  minimalist  music,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  8  out  of 10.
