Viscera///'3/Release Yourself Through Desperate Rituals/WOOAARRGH/2017 CD Review

  Viscera///  are  a  band  from  Italy  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  very  experimental  and  psychedelic  form  of  post  metal with  touches  of  black  and  sludge  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017  album  "'3/Release  Yourself  Through  Desperate  Rituals"  which  will  be  released  in  May  by  WOOAAARGH.

  High  pitched  blackened  sludge  screams  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  heavy  riffing  and  melodic  chanting  a  few  seconds  later  and  most of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length and  the  riffs  also  bring  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard.

  Elements  of  crust  and  grindcore  can  be  heard  during  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  and  when  guitar  leads  are  utilized  they  bring  in  a  more  melodic  post  metal  approach  while  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  amount  of  melody  in  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  the  slower  sections  also  being  very  heavily  influenced  by  doom  metal.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  hear  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  tremolo  picking  can  also  be  heard  in  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  melodic  singing  and  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  there  is  also  a  brief  use  of  crust/hardcore  style  back  up  shouts  and  the  music  also  brings  in  a  great  amount  of  psychedelic  elements  while  other  tracks  also  bring  in  experimental  and  avant  garde  touches  as  well  as  a  brief  use  of  radio  station  samples.

  On  this  recording  Viscera///  takes  experimental,  psychedelia,  crust,  grind,  black,  doom,  sludge  and  post  metal  and  mixes  them together  to  create  something  very  original,  the  production  sound s very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Viscera///  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  experimental,  psychedelia,  crust,  grind,  black,  doom,  sludge  and  post  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Uber-Massive  Melancholia"  and  "In  the  Cut".  8  out  of  10.

Viscera/// Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?


We were born in 2000 as a death-grind outfit with a different name. In 2003 we became Viscera and in 2006 finally Viscera///. What else…maybe we’ll go deeper with the next questions.


2.So far you have released a few length and a split ep, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on both of the recordings and also how do they differ from each other?


Our releases history perfectly describes our musical path in its entirety. The early days production is more harsh and bonded to grindcore and death metal, but the more we grew up the more our style has become open to many new influences and, slowly but painfully, doom, psychedelic, drone, ambient and black metal elements took permanetly place into our style.


3.The band has been around since 2000 but so far has only put out 2 releases, can you tell us a little bit more the gap in between recordings?

It’s true we’ve only published only two full-lenght albums but you can count many other parallel releases. But if the question is strictly about the proper albums things, well, i can just say that we take all the time we need before we decide to book the studio and get it.



4.On the ep you had team up with Abaton, how would you compare their own musical style to yours?


Briefly, I guess that Abaton’s way is far more cerebral compared to ours, which is more immediate.


5.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?


I always write about myself and how I see things. And it’s never positive stuff. 


6.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Viscera///'?


The monicker Viscera(///) came out during the grind days. It’s just gore stuff but we decided to keep it. The “///” have been added later because the australian Viscera complained about the homonymy.


7.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?


We have been playing so many shows in the last 15 years that it’s kinda rough to find some specific highlights…maybe a couple of years ago at Incubate Festival in Tilburg (NL) or a couple of months ago in Jerusalem, but that was more about the fact we were in fucking Israel! And about “how” we fit on stage, I can just say it’s real pain because I suffer from stage fright and the other two guys have similar problems. I guess the audience can feel the suffering and it definitely works.


8.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?


Of course. We’ll have an eurotour in october with fellows Fleshworld, then some one-shot gig around Italy. Besides we are working on 2016 and it seems that something hot is gonna happen.


9.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of drone, sludge and doom metal?


I think that really few people clearly understand what we effectively want to come out with. Maybe due to this and other reasons basically no one gives a fuck about about us.


10.When can we expect another full length and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?


New album will be recorded this summer but we don’t think this new release will open a brighter future to us.


11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?


Our main influences are Godflesh, Carcass, Celtic Frost, Paradise Lost, industrial music and psychedelic stuff from the 70’s, but lately we are crazy for 80’s music, specially Phil Collins. 


12.What are some of your non musical interests?


Cinema, crime facts, the bloodiest events in history, covert politics, loathing and one of us owns a motorcycle.


13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Viscera/2 As Zeitgeist Becomes Profusion Of The I/ConSouling Sounds/2011 CD Review

  Viscera  are  a  band  from  Italy  that  started  out  as  a  grindcore  band  but  evolved  more  into an experimental  drone/doom  metal  band  with  this  recording  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2011  album  "2  As  Zeitgeist  Becomes  Profusion  Of  The  I"  which  was  released  by  ConSouling  Sounds  in  the  year  of  2011.

  Drums  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  drumming  with  some  blast  beats  being  utilized  at  times,  while  the  sound  effects  bring  elements  of  drone,  ambient  and  experimental  to  the  recording,  as  for  the  bass  playing  it  has  a  very  dark  tone  with  riffs  that  follow  the  riffing  that  are  coming  out  of  the  guitars  and  at  times  they  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow,  mid  paced,  to  fast  riffs  that  combine  doom,  drone,  experimental  and  post  rock  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own  with  a  good  amount  of  melody  being  thrown  into  the  riffing  as  well  as  some  soft  and  clean  playing,  while  the  lead  guitars  when  they  are  utilized  are  very  melodic  sounding  post  rock  guitar  solos  and  leads.

  Vocals  are  mostly  clean  singing  vocals  with  some  high  pitched  screams  which  brings  a  black  metal  feeling  to  the  recording  as  well  as  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  samples,  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  everyday  themes,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  strong,  powerful,  heavy  and  professional  sound  with t he  songs  being  long  and  epic  in  length  where  you  can  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording.  

  In  my  opinion  Viscera  are  a  very  great  sounding  hybrid  of  experimental,  drone,  doom  and  post  rock  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Ballad  Of  Barry  L"  and  "Um  ad-Dunia".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.
