Sobaki Tabaka Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?  We have completed our new album, its Russian and English versions. In the later the vocals are done by Patrick Stevens (Hypnoskull) and Rachael Kozak (Hecate). We hope to release it in Europe or the USA.

2. Can you tell us a little bit more about the double compilation album that has been previously released which contains plenty of different bands and artists doing their own versions of your own songs?  Our project member Sergei Ulik has been living in Switzerland for many years. That’s him who suggested the musicians he’s friendly with working out their version of an  ST  song. The response was surprisingly high. It’s a big event for us as it was a completely new experience for Sobaki Tabaka  since most of our musicians are based in Russia.

3. Which your original material  (?) how would you describe your musical progress over the years? Initially the press and our audience identified our genre as ‘Industrial’ although it’s a very vague noon and phenomenon in music. I tend to think that all this me we have been working out our own music genre.

4. What are some of the themes you bring into your music? This is a very complicated question since the concepts are different from album to album, and the lyrics is prey abstract. I would suggest you listen to our new album, its English version, for beer understanding. We have plans to make French and German versions as well.

 5. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Sobaki Tabaka'?
Sobaki Tabaka  can be translated as ‘dogs grilled under heavy press’ (by analogy with ‘grilled flattened chicken’ dish which sounds in Russian like ‘tsyplionok tabaka’). ‘Dogs’ refer to all people while the press can be interpreted as politics, the state, propaganda, daily reality and all that is associated with it.

6. The band has a history that goes back to the 80's, what is it that motivates you to keep going after all of these years? The musical project  Sobaki Tabaka  started in 1996. That’s a project, I’d like to emphasize, as before each of us was playing another kind of music in his own band.

7. What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?  One of the best shows we’ve had was about 3 years ago when we were joined by Kristof Hahn from  Swans . That was both unforgettable and unpredictable. On the stage we are a band of psychopaths. Kristof Hahn also joined us for our new album.

8. Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?  We had tours to Lausanne and Geneva. We wish and plan to come with a tour to Europe.

9. You have different line-ups for both Russia and Europe, can you tell us a little bit more about it?  As I mentioned before,  Sobaki Tabaka  is not a band but a musical project which allows musicians  to whom our whole idea sounds appealing  participate in it. Besides, it is good to be in contact with musicians in Europe since Russia being considered a rather dangerous country, many Russian citizens have a problematic visa issue to your wonderful dreamland.

10. On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your recordings by fans of industrial, noise and underground music? A booking agency we work with brings lots of European and American bands. Many of those musicians have been welcomed in my house. Aer having some vodka, they usually start asking for playing some of our music. As a rule, it makes them highly thrilled. As for our shows, we can only see people listening with their mouths open which we consider as a high compliment.

11. When can we expect new material and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?  We already have a freshly new album. It will be released in Europe in early 2019. It’s not that important  though. 20 years later the music from our new album will sound as relevant.  The same as our first album of 1996. Which musical direction in the future? – God knows…

12. What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays? Personally for me, at different mes it was different music.  Voivod, Slayer  and other ‘heavy’ bands in the 80-s. In the early 90-s it was  Missing Foundation, God, Einstürzende Neubauten and  The The . Now I listen to new  Ulver  and Brazilian music,  Marcela Mangabeira (Sobregal)  as an example.

13. What are some of your non musical interests?  Fighting the Pun regime.

14. Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts? Final words are usually said at funerals, hence no final words or thoughts. Just – to be continued

Sobaki Tabaka/XX-XXIV/Wooaaargh/2018 Double Tribute Album Review

  Sobaki Tabaka  are  a  band  from  Russia  that  plays  a  mixture  of  industrial,  dark  ambient  and  sludge  and  this  is  a  review  of  a  tribute  album  to  them  called  "XX-XXIV"  which  will  be  released  in  November  by  Wooaaargh  and  consists  of  many  bands  and  we  will  review  the  songs  one  by  one.

  khost  brings  us  "The  New  Body"  which  starts  out  with  some  atmospheric  soundscapes  along  with  some  heavy  sludge  metal  riffing  a  few  seconds  later  while  industrial  style  vocals  and  screams are  also  used  at  times  as  well  as  the  music  always  sticking  to  a  slower  direction  and  the  music  also  mixes  in  elements  of  drone.

  Alan  Dubin  brings  us  "Chujie"  which  starts  out  with  atmospheric  sounding  drones  along  with  some  grim  spoken  word  parts  that  add  in  a  touch  of  black  metal  before  evolving into  sludge  and  industrial  style  screams  along  with  some  programmed  beats  and  synths  also  being  used  at  times  as  well  as  soem  harsh  noise  elements.

  Oddateee  brings  us  "Hui  Bez  Hleba"  which  starts  out  with  some  electro  industrial  elements  along  with  some  programmed  beats  while  industrial  style  screams  can  also  be  heard  quite  a  bit along  with  the  music  adding  in  elements  of  noise  rock,  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly.

  John  3:!6  brings  us  "Greh  Bogatstvo  Lyubov  I  Azart"  which  starts  out  with  some  atmospheric  sounding  drones  before  going  into  more  of  an  industrial  direction  along  with  some  programmed  beats  and  bass  guitars  as  well  as  some  heavy  riffs  and  aggressive  vocals  are  also  used  at  times.

  BKGD  brings  us  "Audio  Chujie  Strangers"  which  starts  out  with  some  programmed  beats  along  with  some  elements  of  early  industrial while  the  music  also  gets  very  experimental  and  avnat  garde  at  times

  GSDahlquist  brings  us  "Beside  You"  which  starts  out  with  some  ambient  style  synths  and powerful  sounding  bass  guitars  while  spoken  word  parts  also  being  used  at  times  before  going  into  more  of  an  industrial  direction  which  also  utilizes  programmed  beats.

  Gnaw  Their  Tongues  brings  us  "The  new  Body"  which  starts  out  with  atmospheric  sounding  drones  along  with  some  elements  of  underground  electronic  music  a  few  seconds later  while  black  metal  screams  are  also  utilized  at  times  and  spoken  word  parts  are  also  used  briefly  as  well as  some  touches  of  classical  music.

  Maspin  Dosasivaya  brings  us  "Ledenec  Jizni"  which  starts  out  with  some  elements  of  ambient  along  with  some  spoken  word  parts  a  few  seconds  later  while  the  music  also  brings  in  a  great  amount  of  atmospheric  sounding  drones.

  Styxian  Industries  brings  us  "V  Tele  Hrista"  which  starts  out  with  some  heavy  guitar  riffing  along  with  grim  black  metal  screams a   few  seconds  later  while  the  music  also  mixes  in  elements  of  industrial  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard.

  Headscan  brings  us  "The  New  Body"  which  starts  out  with  some  programmed  beats  and  industrial  style  vocals  while  the  music  is  done  in  more  of  a  electronic  style  along  with  a  small  amount  of  ambient  noise  elements.

  end  user  brings  us  "Chujie"   which  starts  out  with  some  ambient  elements  and  programmed  beats  while  drones  can  also  be  heard  at  times  as  well  as  a  touch  of  the  more  underground  industrial  style.

  Angela  Martyr  brings  us  "Angel  Moi"  which  starts  out  with  drum  beats  before  adding  in  synths  and  black  metal  screams  before  taking  the  music  into  a  heavier  industrial  metal  direction  along  with  some  heavy  riffs.

  Roman  Urodovskikh  brings  us  "Golova"  which  starts out  with  electronic  music  elements  and  powerful  sounding  bass  before  going  into  more  of  a  harsher  industrial  direction  while  also  being  very  experimental  at  the  same  time  and  clean  vocals  are  also  used  at  times.

  BkGD  returns  with  "Audio  Morning  In  Te  Subway"  which  starts  out  with  ambient  style  soundscapes  before  adding  in  some  programmed  beats  while  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  dub  style  vocals  along  with  some  elements  of  dance  music.

  Guvibosch  brings  us  "Live  In  Me"  which  starts  out  with  programmed  beats  and  ambient  elements  while  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  briefly  along  with  some  elements  of  dance  music  as  well  as  getting  very  experimental  at  times.

  John  3:16  returns  with  "I  Refuse"  which  starts  out  with  some   ambient  style  drones  and  distorted  spoken  word  parts  before  adding  in  some  bass,  heavy  riffs  and  programmed  beats  that  adds  in  a  touch  of  noise  rock  and  post  rock  style  guitar  leads  can  also  be  heard  briefly.

   Dave  Phillips  brings  us  "Let  Me  Breathe  You  In.  Live  In"  which  starts  out  with  some  programmed  beats,  screams  and  soundscapes  while  the  music  also  gets  very  experimental  at  times  along  with  a  decent  amount  of  heavy  riffing  and  tortured  voices  are  used  in  the  background  briefly.

  Convulsif  brings  us  "Absolutnoe  Net"  which  starts  out  with  atmospheric  sounding  drones  while  the  track  is  11  minutes  in  length  before  adding  in  some  ambient  style  soundscapes  and  distorted  sounds  along  with  some  bass  guitars  also  being  utilized  at  times  as  well  as  the  music  also  having  its  experimental  and  avant  garde  moments  and  spoken  words  are  also  added  into  some  parts  of  the  tracks  and  when  screams  are  utilized  they  add  in  a  touch  of  black  metal.

  The  Austrasian  Goat  brings  us  "Dosasivaya  Ledenec  Jizni"  which  starts  out  with  ambient   style  synths while  atmospheric  sounding  drones  can  also  be  heard  at  times  and  all  of  the  music  is  instrumental.

  Christian  Garcia-Gaucher  brings  us  "Life  In  Me"  which  starts  out  with  some  distorted  sounding  drones  while  the  track  is  over  6  minutes  in  length  along  with  some  spoken  word  parts  also  being  used  at  times  and  after  awhile  the  music  starts  adding  in  some  noise  rock  style  riffing  and  you  can  also  hear  a  great  mixture  of  both  heavy  and  clean  riffs.

  Cosmic  Ground  bring  us  "Venki  Zabvenyia"  which  starts  out  with  some  ambient  style  drones  while  the  track  is  11  minutes  in  length  as  well  as    the  music  also  getting  very  experimental  at  times along  with  some  spoken  word  parts  and  whispers  also  being  added  into  some  parts  of  the  track,  clean  vocals  can  also  be  heard  in  the  background  briefly.

  Kernal  brings  us  "Trees  Shade  Curves"  which  starts  out  with  some  atmospheric  sounding  drones  while  the  track  is  over  9  minutes  in  length  along  with  some  spoken  word  parts  also being  utilized  at  times  and  towards  the  end  programmed  beats  are  added into  the  music.

  Swarm  Intelligence  brings  us  "V  Tele  Hrista"  which  starts  out  with  some  elements  of  industrial  and  noise  before  adding  in  some  ambient  style  synths  before  adding  in  touches  of  a  more  underground  electronic  music  style. 

  Phillippe  Petit  brings  us  "Yatchita  Yu  Knigu  Parouski"  which  starts  out  with  sci-fi  orientated  soundscapes  and  ambient  elements  while  the  music  also  gets  very  experimental  and  avant  garde  at  times.

  Terminal  Sound  System  brings  us  "Venki  Zabveniya"  which  starts  out  with  some  am  radio  sounds  before  adding  in  some  spoken  word  parts  while  elements  of  drone  and  noise  are  also  utilized  at  times  and  after  awhile  programmed  beats  start  making  their  presence  known.

  Yantra  Mindir  closes  the  compilation  with  "Trees  Shade  Curves"  which  starts  out  with  some  industrial  sounding  noises  while  the  music  also  mixes  in  atmospheric  soundscpaes  and  elements  of  ethnic  music  as  well  as  some  spoken  word  parts.

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  industrial,  dark  ambient,  sludge,  black  metal,  dance  and  experimental  music.  8  out  of  10.
