1.Can you give us an update on going on with the musical project these days?

You caught me with a broken leg. I can’t move around much or play the gear I usually use in my daily routine. That's brings thoughts.

Right now, I’m thinking about simplifying the setup and brainstorming new musical ideas and approaches.

I plan to return to normal operations in the next few months.

2.In December you had released a new album, musically how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

This release is different in many ways. It’s more raw and straightforward in execution—noisier and more abstract, inspired by a primitive, fast-paced reality.

All tracks were recorded live on a reel-to-reel tape recorder with no extra mixing or post-production. The sound is natural, with lots of field recordings and rhythmic parts recorded as live jams.

3.What are some of the themes and concepts you bring out with your musical style?

I like dynamic sound and rhythm-focused production.

My music often reflects society’s mess, transforming stress and aggression into sound. I’m more into rhythmic structures and sonic jokes than melody.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Urbanfailure'?

It reflects how we’re failing as a species—how our urban expansion goes against nature and feeds greed, how we’re losing our connection to the environment and to ourselves.

For me, it means playing my best and letting the noise carry the message.

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

The artwork was created by my long-time friend Vladmira Pčolová.

We’ve worked together on many releases. She has this great ability to translate music and message into visual art.

The front is mostly typography, made exclusively for this release using cut-out pieces. The back is an amazing scenery drawing, representing the release's vibe and state of mind.

6.With this project you record everything by yourself, do you prefer to work solo?

No I prefer working and playing with friends, but it is much easier to make and record music alone :-)

I wish we will record something soon with my other project.

7.What are some of the best shows that you have played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

The gig in Vienna with Fuckhead was crazy blast, gig on Brutal assault was amazing, but I love most of gigs, people who loves this music are great.

I do HW only performance, it is live ride reflecting all the inputs. Sometime I play with vj friends, some time just fog and lights.

8.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?

I’d love to do a short tour, but my current situation makes that pretty unlikely.

I’m planning to play local gigs, and I’m open to more if the opportunity comes.

This year, we’ll play at the Hardby Samoty festival—an improvised Urbsounds gig with Shutcoo, Makkatu and Vrtacky podesate hodine.

9.Can you tell us a little bit more about 'urbsounds.sk'?

Urbsounds is a small record label focused on music I like—mostly wild and noisy electronics.

Most of the artists are friends, and we share similar musical tastes.

Releases are usually small runs on cassette or vinyl, released irregularly :-) Same with our parties.

10.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of noise and electronic music?

Overall, I feel positive. I’m glad there’s still a scene out there. It’s great to have friends all over. a lot of interesting stuff happening in music.

11.Where do you see yourself heading into as a musician during the future?

Nothing too bright :-) I just want to play some new tracks, explore new directions, and keep it fun and evolving.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that you are currently listening to nowadays?

Mostly weird and crazy electronic music, plus old-school grind with a hardcore edge—like Total Fucking Destruction, Dropdead, Infest, Noisear, Spazz—some death and black metal too. The Slovak scene is quite fragmented, but still active and kicking. Mates Hlukar and Dead Janitor are killing it, and Maraki always throws insane live sets. Venta Protesix is wild. I broke my leg on my way home from a crushing Crypta and Aborted show. It must mean something...

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Stray in the chaos until errors will prevail.

  Urbanfailure  are  a  solo  project  from  Slovakia  that  plays  a  mixture  of  noise,  experimental,  IDM  and  industrial  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2024  album  "ShortCutsHarshMellow"  which  was  released  by  urbsounds.sk.

  Harsh  noises  and  power  electronics  start  off  the  album  while  a  lot  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  short in  length.  When  programmed  beats  are  utilized  they  also  bring  in  elements  of  IDM  and  industrial  along  with  the  music  also  getting  very  experimental  at times  and  all  of  the  recording  sticks  to  an  instrumental  direction.

  A  lot  of  the  music  sounds  very  improvised  while  a  great  portion  of  the  songs  also  sound  very  different  from  each  other.  Synths  can  also  be  heard  on  a  few  tracks  and  natural  sounding  noises  are  also  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  album,  spoken  words  can  also  be  heard  briefly

  Urbanfailure  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  harsh  noise,  experimental,  IDM  and  industrial  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  his  own  as  well  as  keeping  everything  instrumental  while  the  production  sounds  very  dark.

Saturn/W.AA/Ukhan Records/2021 Compilation Album Review

 

  This  is  a  review  of  a  compilation from  Ukhan  Records  called  "Saturn"  which  consists  pf  artists  and  musical  projects  in  the  drone,  ambient,  glitch,  industrial,  experimental  and  techno  with  the  song  themes  revolving  around science  fiction,  astronomical,  alchemical,  mythological  and  archetype  subjects  and  the  album  was  released  in  2021  by  UKhan  Records  and  called  "Saturn"  and  we  will  review  each  track  one  by  one.

  Shortwave  Research  Group  brings  us  "Lua  Mater"  which  starts  out  with  some  electronic  drones  along  with  some  ambient  synths  and  programmed  beats  a  few  seconds  later  and  sticks  to  an  instrumental  direction.

  Petrolio  brings  us  "19°  7′  6″  +  44°53'56_04 N  +  08°12'28_44 E"  which  starts  out  with  some  ambient  style  synths  which  also  add  in  a  variety  of  many  different  sounding  keys  and  glitches  while  also  mixing  in  some  electronic  sounds  before  going  into  a  more  experimental  direction.  programmed  beats  can  also  be  heard  at  times.   

  Bad  Girl  brings  us  "Land"  which  starts  out  with  some  drum  beats  and  field  recordings  before  adding  in  some  electronic  style  drones  and  glitches  before  adding  in  some  programmed  beats  and  spoken  word  samples  as  the  track  progresses.

  Roberto  Memoli  brings  us  "Divisione  di  Cassin'"  which  starts  out  with  some  techno  style  synths  and  programmed  beats  while  also  add  in  some  touches  of  glitch  and  idm  and  also s ticks  to  an  instrumental  direction.

  Marco  Pianges  brings  us  "Mimas"  which  starts  out  with  some  electronic  style  drones  before  adding  in    glitches  and  programmed  electronic  beats  as  well  as  always  sticking  to  an  instrumental  direction.

  For  The  Flory  Of  Nothing  brings  us  "Cassiel"  which  starts  out  with  electronic  style  drones  and  noises  while  also  bringing  in  a  very  ritualistic  style  which  also  gets  very  experimental  sounding  at  times,  guitar  sounds  are  also  added  into  the  track  and  when  synths  are  utilized  they  also  add  in  a  touch  of  ambient.

  InHum'AwZ  brings  us  "Sideral"  which  starts  out  with some  ambient  style  synths  and  drones  before  adding  in  some  glitches  and  electronic  beats  which  also  adds  in  elements  of  techno  into  the  track.

  Ad-Just  brings  us  "God's  Sickle"  which  starts  out  with  glitches  and  programmed  beats  while  also  being  mostly  rooted  in  an  electronic  style  along  with  some  elements  industrial,  techno,  idm,  and  ambient.

  The  Diish  brings  us  "Capro"  which  starts  out  with  some  programmed  industrial  style  beats  and  experimental  soundscapes  and  noises  before  adding  in  some  elements  of  techno  and  electronic  dance  music.

  M.  Irrlicht  brings  us  "Yamaloka"  which  starts  out  with  some  drones  and  experimental  soundscapes  while  the  track  is  also  over  7  minutes  in  length  and  after  awhile  programmed  beats  and  glitches  are  also  added  into  the  music.

  Quindicesimo  Arcano  brings  us  "Orbite  di  un  pianeta  defunto"  which  starts  out  with  some  harsh  noises  and  power  electronics  before  adding  in  some  ambient  style  drones  and  synths  and  also  sticks  to  an  instrumental  direction.

  Rino  Sorbello  brings  us  "Cut"  which  starts  out  with  some  distorted  sounding  drones  and  electric  guitars  which  are  also  all  improvise  along  with  some  melodic  guitar  solos  and  leads  a  few  seconds  later.

  NCT333  closes  the  compilation  with  "Black  Bile's  Control"  which  starts  out  with  some  ambient  style  synths  and  drones  while  also  having  some  experimental  soundscapes  in  the  background  before  mixing  in  a  heavier  industrial  metal  sound  and  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  briefly.

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  compilation  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of   drone,  ambient,  glitch,  industrial,  experimental  and  techno.  8  out  of  10.

For The Glory Of Nothing/Garmonbozia/Ukhan Records/2021 EP Review

 

  For  The  Glory  Of  Nothing  are  a  musical  project  from  the  United  Kingdom  that  plays  a  mixture  of  ritual,  ambient,  industrial  and  idm  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  ep  "Garmonbozia"  which  was  released  by  Ukhan  Records.

  Idm  style  sounds  start  off  the  ep  along  with  some  spoken  word  samples  a  few  seconds  alter  while  all  of  the  drum  beats  are  programmed.  Elements  of  industrial  are  also  utilized  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  as  well  as  the  synths  also  being  very  heavily  rooted  in  am  ambient  and  whispered  vocals a r e also  utilized  at  times.

  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  ritualistic  sounding  while  the  synths  also  add  in  a  variety  of  many  different  sounding  keys.  All  of  the  tracks  also  sound  very  different  from  each  other  along  with  all  of  the  songs  sticking  to  either  a  slow  or  mid  tempo  musical  direction.

  For  The  Glory  Of  Nothing  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  ritual,  ambient,  industrial  and idm  and   mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  song  themes  focus  on  the  sex  magick  of  Aliester  Crowley,  Jack  Parsons  and  L  Ron  Hubbard  in  the  O.T.O  and  the  UFO  phenomena  from  the  writings  of  Valle,  Hynek  and  Keel.

  In  my  opinion  For  the  Glory  Of  Nothing  are  a  very  great  sounding   mixture  of  ritual,  ambient,  industrial  and  idm  and  if  you  are a  fan  of  those  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  musical  project.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "And  Its  Color  Is  Green"  and  "Anti-World  overnight".  8  out  of  10.

  NCT333  are  a  solo  project  from  Italy  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  mixture  of  industrial, ambient  and  down  tempo  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2021  ep  "Controra"  which  was  released  by  UKhan  Records.

  Electronic  sounds  start  off  the  ep  while  all  of  the  drum  beats  are  also  programmed  along  with  the  synths  also  adding  in  elements  of  ambient.  Sampled  voices  can  also be  heard  briefly  as  well  as  the  music  also  adding  in  a  great  amount  of  industrial  and  down  tempo  touches  and  a  couple  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  Powerful  sounding  bass  can  also  be  heard  at  times  while  all  of  the  tracks  also  sound  very  different  from  each  other.  Most  of  the  songs  are  also  instrumentals  along  with  some  idm  style  sounds  also  being  mixed  in  at  times  and  towards  the  end  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard.

  On  this  recording  NCT333  takes  industrial,  ambient,  electronic  music  and  down  tempo  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  very  apocalyptic  sounding  recording.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  song  themes  focus  on  heatwaves  and  their  damages  towards  the  world.  

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  NCT333  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  industrial,  ambient  and  down  tempo,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "It  Hides  In  The  light"  and  "Twilight  Redemption".  8  out  of  10.

Laüstic/La Canzone del Cefaloforo/Cursed Monk Records/2021 EP Review

 

    Laüstic  are  a  band  from  New  York  that  plays  a  mixture  of  experimental,  noise  idm  and  extreme  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  ep  "La  Canzone  del  Cefaloforo"  which  was  released  by  Cursed  Monk  Records.

  Experimental  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  clean  chants  a  few  seconds  later  while  the  music  also  has  its  avant  garde  moments.  Idm  and  industrial  style  beats  are  also  added  into  some  parts  of  the  recording  as  well  as  some  elements  of  noise  also  being  utilized  at  times  and  the  keyboards  also  add  in  touches  of  ambient.

  Most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  semi  clean  electric  guitars  can  also  be  heard  at  times.  Vocals  are  done  in  mostly  a  clean  style  along  with  some  spoken  word  parts  also  being  added  into  some  parts  of  the  recording  as  well  as  some  black  metal  screams  also  being  utilized  briefly.

  All  of  the  drum  beats  are  also  programmed  along  with  each  track  also  sounding  very  different  from  each  other.  A  touch  of  psychedelia  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  when  the  music  finally  speeds  up  a  small  amount  of  melodic  riffing,  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes.

NCT333 Interview

 

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the musical project since the recording and release of the new ep?

I am currently writing new songs and refining other compositions that are going to be released soon.

I combine music composition with the study of the topics covered, merging myself as much as

possible with a specific psychic environment.

2.In December you had released a new ep, musically how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

"Aion" has more metaphysical and ascetic temper; that's the reason why I used less rhythmic drive,

since rhythm is more linked to the instinctive human nature. Regarding the harmonic structure, I

followed concepts of dronic and hypnotic composition to better achieve the psychic tension and

monoideism, pivotal of the ascetic process.

3.This is also your first release since 2015, can you tell us a little bit more about what has been going on during that time frame?

Actually in July 2020 an anthology entitled "Dead Friends Dream Coldriver" was released for the

"Golden Catrame" label. In there I have collected compositions produced between 2012 and 2020 but

absent in the 2015 album "Black Summer of Trisomic Lovers". True to be told, in recent years I have

been quite erratic in composition due to the economic and job instabilities I had to face.

4.The song themes on the new ep cover Occultism, Gnosticism and Alchemy, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in these topics?

Since I was a teenager, I had the suspicion that the totality of existence does not resolve itself inthe mere

material aspect. Therefore I have been attracted to books, comics and films that concern topics such as

supernatural, magic and occultism.

At my 20's, I discovered Julius Evola and the cultural movement of Traditionalism (authors such as Guenon,

Schuon and others). Thus, I integrated these interests into a more organic concept of spiritual evolution by

approaching doctrines as Alchemy, Hindu, Buddhist and Islamic asceticism. Recently I have tried to

bring these studies back into the category of the Christian tradition in which I grew up and so I tried to

deepen the Gnostic and esoteric thought of the first centuries of Christianity.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'NCT333'?

The "NCT333" moniker combines two elements.

"NCT" is the beginning of my tax code.

The number "333" is taken from Crowley's kabbalistic exegesis in reference to the entity “Choronzon”,

whose function is to nullify the ego. The name therefore represents the purpose of dissolution of the false

ego, referring to the social and psychic aspect of profane individuality, linked to "name" and "form".

6.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the ep cover?

The artwork for "Aion" is edited by Ubu Khan. The image was chosen because it encloses the colors of

the three alchemical phases recalled as track title's names.

The concept we wanted to point up is the bursting of the dimension of otherness into the contingent

manifestation during the contemplation of a void corner, an image strictly close to mental stillness as a

necessary mean to perceive the subtlest aspects of reality.

7.Have you done any live shows with this musical project or open to the idea?

So far I have never managed to find legitimacy for my electronic live. For about 20 years I have been

wondering what form it could take to acquire meaning. I played my own compositions while performing

as a DJ, but I never did a real live show with this project. It is my intention to do a full live when I'll find

the right answer.

8.The new ep was released on 'Ukhan Records, can you tell us a little bit more about this label?

"UKhan Records" is a small and new label with a very clear and strong idea about musical and aesthetic

style which get correspondences with my works. For this reason I decided to collaborate with them as an

artist and as artistic producer for other artists's releases under the label, scheduled in 2021.

9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of dark ambient and industrial?

Thanks to the work of the label, this is the first time that my works are known abroad. I have received

interest good feedback from America to Eastern Europe and this makes me very proud.

I was recognised an original and not conventional approach to these genres and this is a source of

satisfaction for me.

Obviously the name NCT333 is rather unknown outside Italy and a new label has not too consideration

on magazines and webzines at the moment. For this reason, I sincerely thank those who like you, with

sincere interest and genuine passion, has give me space to

10.Where do you see yourself heading into musically during the future?

Lately I have been interested in some archaic musical traditions characteristic of southern Italy whose

origins can be traced back to residues of the pagan Bacchic and Dionysian rites of the Greek-Roman

tradition. I would like to be able take possession of these expressive codes and combine them in my

musical production. Also I would like to write soundtracks for videogames which, in many case, have

become a new art form that I really appreciate and has a lot of expressive potential

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

My basic music culture can be traced back to post-punk and the seminal bands of darkwave and

industrial. In the first teen-age I was also listening to extreme metal (mainly black, death and doom)

influenced by a dear friend (owner of the black metal band "Fear of Eternity") who was very passionate about this genres.

I started to like electronic music in my late teens thanks to the influence of my friends "Loozoo" a band

that dealt with these sounds. My favorite electronics bands are Scorn, Coil and Pan Sonic. Nowadays I

am very interested in some aspects of the louder and noisy Shoegaze, for example I am literally in love

with the sound of "A Place To Bury Strangers" and I really appreciate some works of "Raveonettes",

"Singapore Sling" or the Italians "Kill Your Boyfriend ". I'm also intrigued by the sound of so-called

Trap-Metal by artists like Ghostemane, Bones, Scarlxrd and Suicideboys.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?  

We are all experiencing difficult times in which the material and psychic conditions of existence have

become, and are likely to become more, harder and it is easy to get discouraged and collapse. In this

situation, my humble advice is to take advantage of it to discern the most futile aspects from the important

ones of existence and work on it, not letting yourself be involved, more than necessary, by the silly

diatribes and false problems that characterize and substantiate this era of chaos and dissolution. In

conclusion, I would like to thank my woman and close friends who have supported me so far in this

project.

Kaschade Interview

 

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the musical project since the recording and release of the new album?

Spontaneous. From the base. Example in which you need to wrestle to get the end result. The discipline of composing. Or as jazz musicians say - we get inspiration from everywhere. Like the cycle of nature or the creation of the universe.

2.In October you released a new album, musically how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

All albums are ambient but with psychedelic addition. Of course experimental. And this new one is mostly electronic. The album is thoroughly done. Step by step. Handwork. It’s an ambient psychedelic album. Traces of jazz music. And too much of experimental space music with dark moods. Is more based on a themes, on a solo, on improvisation, on a point, comma.

3.From 2016 there was no music being released while there was an album released every year from 13 to 16, can you tell us a little bit more about what has been going on during that time frame?

Yes, there was no music at the time. But in 2017 I work more compositions for "Performance" album. 2018 I started to compose two singles for the "Nightmares" and it was issued in 2019. Besides, in 2018 I make music for a documentary "Surrealisam". It's about a Kaschade music. Also I recorded one song with Danish ambient jazz guitarist Alex Jønsson. 2019 was a year for exploring technique on synthesizer and saxophone. Track "Kim the Vampire" and "Chlorine Punk" was boring. Kim is epic and I need to much time to compose and arrange that. That's it.

4.What are some of the themes and images you bring into the newer music?

I don't want to localize compositions and create worlds near worlds in foggy fantasy. The listener has the full right to walk through the valley of light and to snatch monsters from the womb.

5.On past references you made references to Oscar Wilde, Phillip K. Dick and> Ron Hubbard in the song titles, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in there writings and are there any other authors or writers that have been influential to you?

6.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Kaschade'?

Kaschade is a musician who saw a Koala in the bathroom along with Grey alien. Grey alien was wearing a wig and had neon blue water over it. Also, Kaschade is a German surname but it sounds like a marzipan and wild chestnut perfume.

7.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

It’s a green organism and it fly using outgrowth . Outgrowth like fungal disease. They are mutating little balls  from the plasticine and caught lichen. Many alien organism you can see in Surrealisam and in a upcoming documentary. First i painted according to role models as Leonadro da Vinci and  Rembrandt van Rijn. Than came cartoon How the Grinch Stole Christmas! from 1966. Grinch, Pink Panther, The Ant and the Aardvark, they improved my drawing. That's it.

8.Have you done any live performances with this solo project?

I have two music visual performance. This epidemic situation interrupted another two performance. I don’t know. I have plane also to promote a music documentary on festivals. But really I feel more happy when I compose a music. Everything is a discography and nothing more.

9.The last few albums have been released by 'Interphone Records', can you tell us a little bit more about this label?

Performance and this new record is under Interphone Records. Interphone is only record label who registered my albums. Another albums was under records labels in England and Belgium. Interphone Records take care about my albums. And it is possible that they will publish next year my "Nightmares" album on the vinyl.

10.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of experimental, ambient and noise?

This are not popular genres. But this is gift for a superlative above-average listeners. One of this genres are just a little land but for other people. This is a universe.

11.Where do you see yourself heading into as a musician during the future?

Most musicians are not fans of the issue like I am - what are these role models. I think, I know, the plans are easier. A normal organized person should plan even if everything is unpredictable. Promotion of the album -Nightmares as well as the music documentary - Dreams.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

I always say what I listen to first. I had role models before, before the first album was released. I always tried to put other people's music aside and start composing in my own way. This is how our own worlds are created.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

It's important just to be alive and creative. To be a positive person and nothing more. That important.

  Kaschade  are  a  solo  project  from  Germany  that h as  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  mixture  of  a  mixture  of  ambient,  experimental  and  psychedelic  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2020  album  "Nightmares"  which  was  released  by  Interphone  Records.

  Dark  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  while  the music  also  gets  very  experimental  and  avant  garde  sounding  at  times.  All  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  some  video  game  style  sounds  also  being  added  into  some  parts  of  the  recording  and  guitar  sounds  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  music.

  The  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  programmed  beats  while  the  music  also  adds  in  a  decent  amount  of  idm,  industrial  and  electronic  music  touches.  When  synths  are  utilized  they  also  bring  elements  of  ambient  onto  the  album  along  with  the  music  also  getting  more  diverse  as  the  album  progresses.

  Noises  are  also  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording  along  with  the  music  also  adding  in  some  influences  of  weird  jazz.   All  of  the  tracks  are  instrumental  and  also  sound  very  different  as  well  as  having  its  psychedelic  moments,  saxophones  and  neo-classical  can  also  be  heard  briefly  while  the production  sounds  very dark.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Kaschade  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  ambient,  experimental,  idm  and  psychedelic  music,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Kim  The  Vampire"  and  "Nightmares".  8  out  of  10.

CNJR Interview

 

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?

CNJR is a project I started because I had stopped making music in my life and I needed something to push me and get me back into the studio. When I set out to begin, I didn't have a clear vision of what CNJR would sound like, I just began experimenting in the studio and letting my influences and what was exciting me at the time lead the way. I wanted to commit to letting the creativity push the music, rather than a pre-decided vision. What resulted is an odd mixture of analog and soft synths, retro psychedelics, alternative rock and industrial, electronic music, all meeting in an experimental mix mash of indie electronic. In addition to letting the music do what it wanted to do, I also wanted to be transparent and truthful with my emotions. Being in a relatively dark place in life, and battling with depression and trauma and identity and being queer, all of this influences the sound into a relatively meloncholic and dark sound.

> 2.Recently you have released a new album, musically how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

My initial releases were almost 100% instrumental. They were heavily electronic, focused more on synthesizers and beats. When I set out to make the new record I wanted to incorporate more organic instruments, I wanted to explore adding in guitars, and I wanted to use my voice both as an instrument and a tool for lyrical expression. So... the new album really moves out of the instrumental electronic space, into a more indie electronic space with actual songs. I've been really enjoying fusing these two worlds together and feel like the aesthetic of CNJR has progressed into a more definitive direction.

> 3.A lot of your lyrics cover science fiction and dystopian themes, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in those topics?

Yeah, I have a background in radical politics and radical communities, which simply put colors the way I see the world. Being anti-capitalist, anarchist, being sharply opposed to people in a set community having different access to that community's resources, is really frustrating in relation to seeing what is going on in the world. The injustice, the division, the violence and atrocities, the poverty, it is all very very real. I often jokingly say 'THIS IS THE DYSTOPIA', and that really sums up why speculative fiction, speculative science fiction, and dystopian themes speak to me. Because, ultimately, I view them as simple analogies that are merely describing right now. As far as storytelling goes, I believe that these kinds of analogies are really powerful, they can accompany someone's experience of the world, they can lead people from being relatively apathetic to radicalized. So, there is always an aspect of dystopian storytelling in my art, even if it's abstract.

> 4.Can you tell us a little bit more about the name 'CNJR'?

CNJR is the word Conjure without vowels. I believe that music can be a form of magic, that it impacts people deeply, that it can save lives, that it can connect to people emotionally in a way that other forms of art or language cannot. When I was thinking of words that may describe what I wanted to do with music, the word conjure stood out, because ultimately I wanted to conjure a mood, an emotion, a feeling, that is true and honest in it's expression of what I'm feeling while surviving this world, and also is true and honest enough that other people may connect to it. The idea of conjuring a raw expression, and that being something that may impact the life of another person, is the foundation of the name.

> 5.How would you describe the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

Well, while leaving some subjectivity intact, I'll just say that the cover art for the name album represents a certain anguish that I think is the root of the emotional palette on the new album.

> 6.With this project you record everything by yourself, are you open to working with other musicians or do you prefer to work solo?

I would love to work with other musicians. Collaboration is a big goal of mine with this project. Hopefully the project grows and becomes an avenue for such collaborations to take place. I would really enjoy to do some singles with other artists that I respect, and have been reaching out to a few already.

> 7.What are some of the best shows that you have played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

I have not had the opportunity to do many CNJR live shows yet. I have played a handful of shows in the United States, as well as a handful of shows in Germany. My favorite one thus far was probably the Future Archive Recordings showcase event in Berlin last year, because I got to perform in a basement full of weird old objects and pipes coming out of the ceilings and all kinds of doomy vibes. Thus far, CNJR shows have been performed solo, but I really do not enjoy performing solo and have been working on future tours and shows including live drums and possibly another person doing bass and synths. The big vision for live shows is to have a full band, and a visual backdrop.

> 8.The new album was released on 'Future Archive Recordings', can you tell us a little bit more about this label?

Future Archive Recordings was a label that I helped start. It is a collaborative project between Little People, Sun Glitters, Arms and Sleepers, and myself. Since the inception it has grown to be more of a traditional label, releasing for other artists as well, like Blockhead, Yppah, and more. It is a really fun project because all of the artists are people i've known for a long time or worked with in other capacities or have some kind. It's kind of like a big family helping each other and providing a really professional and competitive release platform for ourselves. Ultimately, the majority of FAR releases are in the downtempo electronic genre, and as my music shifts into a more indie electronic space I may be looking to branch out to some other label releases in the future.

> 9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of experimental and dark indie?

Well, it is hard to say. I think most people don't tend to send feedback to artists after listening to music. However, I have been getting some people here and there reaching out and expressing how the music has impacted them, which has been really rewarding for me to hear. I love hearing from people and hope to have more one on one conversations with fans in the future. Ultimately, making music is a partially social thing, and interacting with other people around how the music makes them feel is really important to me. I definitely feel like the music is fairly experimental and dark, so it is not for everyone, but there are definitely a lot of people out there who connect with the emotional aesthetic behind the project.

> 10.Where do you see yourself heading into as a musician during the future?

I really hope to be able to do soundtrack work for video games and shows, more collaborations with other musicians, more experimenting with how the music can be performed live, and more songs that include singing and storytelling. I'll never stick to one genre probably, so it is going to be a long journey of experimenting with lots of sounds and palettes, but the theme uniting all of it I think will be rawness and emotion.

  CNJR  are  a  solo  project  from  the  United  States  that  plays  an  experimental  mixture  of  dark  indie,  post  rock,  electronic  music,  IDM,  synthwave,  darkwave,  down  tempo  and  witch  house  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2020 ep  "I  Can  See  The  Church  Burning  Through  The  Binoculars"  which  was  released  by  Future  Archive  Recordings.

  Synths  start  off  the  ep and  also  give  the  songs  more  of  a  cinematic  atmosphere  while  also  adding  in  a  variety  of  many  different  sounding  keys.  At  times  the  music  also  captures  the  soundtrack  atmosphere  of  a  dystopian  science  fiction  soundtrack  as  well  as  adding  in  a  great  amount  of  programmed  beats.

  When  electric  guitars  are  utilized  they  also  bring  in  elements  of  indie  and  post  rock  onto  the  recording  while  some  of  the  tracks  are  instrumental.  The  songs  also  add  in  some  elements  of  electronic  Music,  IDM,  down  tempo  and  witch  house  along  with  one  track  also  introducing  clean  vocals  onto  the  recording.

  Electronic  dance  beats  start  off  the  album  while  going  for  the  more  underground  side  of  that  genre  while  also  adding  in  a  great  amount  of  programmed  beats.  Glitches  are  also  mixes  into  some parts  of  the music  while  also  mixing  in  a  great  amount  of  power  electronics  and  harsh  noises  and  most  of  the  songs  are  also  instrumentals.

  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  experimental  sounding  while  the  synths  also  bring  in  some  elements  of  dark  ambient  and  drone  when  they  are  utilized.  All  of  the  tracks  also  sound  very  different  from  each  other  along  with  the  music  also  bringing  in  a  very  powerful  bass  sound  on  some  of  the  songs.

MonkeYear/Chelidon Frame/Discontinuation Of Treatment/Yume III/2020 Split Album Review

  This  is  a  review  of  a  3  way  split  album  between  Italy's  MonkeYear,  Chelidon  Frame  and  Discontinuation  Of  Treatment  called  "Yume  III"  which  was  self  released  in  2020  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  MonkeYear  a  solo  project  that  plays  a  mixture  of  rave,  chip-tune  and  industrial.

  After  the  avant  garde  sounding  intro  his  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  electronic  music  elements  while  spoken  word  parts  are  also  utilized  at  times.  All  of  the  drum  beats  are  also  programmed  along  with  the  songs  also  getting  very  experimental  and  adding  in  elements  of  industrial  and  rave.

  Female  and  male  vocals  can  also  be  heard  briefly  along  with  some  touches  of  idm  also  being  utilized  at  times  along  with  all  of  his  tracks  sounding  very  different  from  each  other  along  with  a  brief  use  of  gabber  style  bass.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes.

  In  my  opinion  MonkeYear  is  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  rave,  industrial,  chip-tune,  idm  and  experimental  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  solo  project.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Not  that  Easy-3".

  Next  up  is  Chelidon  Frame  who  returns  with  his  mixture  of  electro-acoustic,  drone,  ambient  and  noise.

  His  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  ambient  style  synths  along  with  some  noises  and  distorted  drones  a  few  seconds  later.  Touches  of  electronic  music  can  also  be  heard  at  times  giving  the  songs  more  of  a  horror  movie  orientated  atmosphere  while  programmed  beats  are  also  used  on  a  regular  basis.

  Spoken  word  samples  are  also  added  into  the  background  along  with  all  of  his  tracks  sounding  different  from  each  other  and  also  mixing  in  a  great  amount  of  electro-acoustic  elements  as  well  as  some  synths  also  being  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  the  production  sounds  very  dark.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Chelidon  Frame  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  ambient,  drone  and  noise,  you  should  check  out  his  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Commutazione".

  Next  up  is  Discontinuation  of  Treatment  a  solo  project  that  plays  a  mixture  of  post  punk  and  daarkwave.

  His  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  avant  garde  style  synths  and  field  recordings  while elements  of  darkwave  and  post  punk  are  also  a  huge  part  of  the  music.  Spoken  word  samples  are  also  added  into  some  parts  of  his  recording  along  with  some  demonic  voices  and  whispers  which  also  adds  in  a  touch  of  black  metal,

  Programmed  beats  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  his  tracks  along  with  some  touches  of  dance  and  electronic  music  also  being  utilized  at  times  as  well  as  some  industrial  sounds  also  being  uses  at  times,  all  of  his  tracks  also  sound s very  different  from  each  other  and  the  production  sounds  very  dark.

  In  my  opinion  Discontinuation  Of  Treatment  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  experimental,  darkwave  and  post  punk  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  solo  project.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Sincerely".

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  underground  electronic  music  8  out  of  10.
