A Tribute To Bathory/Antichrist Magazine/Grand Sounds Promotions/2022 Compilation Review

 

  This  is  a  review  of  a  compilation  of  bands  doing  cover  songs  from  Sweden's  Bathory  a  band  that  was  very  influential  on  the  black,  viking  and  thrash  metal  genres  as  well  as  being  considered  one  of  the  originators  of  black  metal,  the  album  was  released  as  a  joint  effort  between  Antichrist  Magazine  and  Grand  SOunds  Promotion  and  we  will  review  each  track  one  by  one.

  Germany's  Reactorbeast  brings  us  "Hades"  which  they  mix  their  thrash  metal  style  in  with  the  first  wave  style  of  black  metal  style  of  the  song  as  well  as  bringing  in  a  more  German  approach  of  thrash  metal  vocals  to  the  track.

  Germany's  Hateful  Agony  brings  us  "Reaper"  where  they  take  the  classic  German  thrash  metal  style  along  with  the  first  wave  black  metal  rawness  of  the  genre  as  well a s  bringing  in  an  early  death  metal  approach  to  the  vocals.

  Italy's  Orgrel  brings  us  "Necromancy"  which  they  also  add  in  some  second  wave  touches  to  the  song  as  well  remaining  true  to  the  original  vision  of  the  track.  and  the  riffs  and  leads  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody.

  Poland's  Vephar  brings  us  "Sacrifice"  where  they  take  this  song  and  change  things  around  their  old  school  style  of  death  metal  but  also  retaining  the  black  metal  elements  of  the  original  version.  

  Sweden/Indonesia's  Nattmaran  brings  us  "In  Conspiracy  With  Satan"  where  they  take  their  punk  influenced  mixture  of  black,  thrash  and  speed  metal  and  also  bring  in  an  even  more  raw  version  of  the  original  song.  

  Slovakia's  Demonic-Eyed  brings  us  "Raise  The  Dead"  and  they  add  more  crust  and  hardcore  style  punk,  thrash  and  crossover  elements  in  which  where  not  presented  on  the  original  version  of  the  track.

  Norway's  Myrholt  brings  us  "War"  and  they  take  the  first  wave  nature  of  the  track  and  mixes  it  in  with  more  a  second  where  Norwegian  black  metal  metal  as  well  as  taking t he  vocals  into  more  of  an  aggressive  direction.

  Canada's  Winterhearth  brings  us  "Born  For  Burning"  where  they  take  the  song  into  more  of  modern  blackened  thrash  metal  direction  that  is  still  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  old  school  style  of  the  original.

  Sweden's  Helvetestromb  brings  us  "Sadist  (Tormentor)"  where  they  take  some  raw  black  metal  and  crust  punk  elements  in  to  create  a  song  that  is  more  brutal  than  the  original  version  of  the  track.

  Spain's  Gorguina  brings  us  "The  Return  Of  Darkness  And  Evil"  where  they  take  the  or9iginal  track  and  mixes  it  in  with  the  raw  aggression  of  the  second  wave  style  as  well  as  giving  the  vocals  more  of  a  grim  approach.  

  Poland's  Dominance  bring s us  "Massacre"  and  they  also  take  the  music  into  more  of  a  raw  second  wave  black  metal  style  than  the  original  version  as  well a s  taking  the  vocals  approach  into  more  of  an  aggressive  direction.

  Spain's  Nuclear  Revenge  brings  us  "Woman  Of  Dark  Desires"  and  they  also  bring  in  more  modern  blackened  thrash  metal  touches  to  the  track  as  well  as  remaining  true  to  the  old  school  vision  of  the  song.          

  Australia's  Zkarv  brings  us  "Call  From  The  Grave"  and  also  adds  in  some  ambient  elements  to  update  the  song  for the  modern  era  as  well  as  keeping  the  tracks  man  focus  rooted  in  more  of  a  black  metal  style.

  Italy's  Avtotheism  brings  us  "Equimanthorn"  which  starts  out  with  some  synths  before  going  into  more  of  a  brutal  and  technical  direction  of  death  metal  as  well  as  retaining  the  black  metal  elements  of  the  original  version.

  United  Kingdom's  Craven  Idol  brings  us  "Chariots  Of  Fire"  which  also  brings  in  more  of  a  horror  movie  vibe  than  the  original  version  as  well  as  adding  in  a  lot  more  rawness  of  brutality  to  the  track.  

  Poland's  Mystic  Rites  brings  us  "A  Fine  Day  To  Die"  which  is  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  starts  out  with  some  clean  playing  as  well  as  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  clear  vocals  before  going  into  more  of  an  aggressive  black  metal  direction.

  U.S.A's  Luminous   Veil  brings  us  "For  Those  Who  Die"  which  starts  out  with  some  epic  battle  sounds  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  which  also  adds  in  a  more  modern  black  metal  approach  to  the  original  version.

  Netherlands's  Gorge  Of  War  brings  us  "Dies  Irae"  which  he  takes  the  original  and  mixes  it  in  with  some rawer  black/war  metal  touches   and  experimental  elements  but  keeping  the  song  very  brutal.

  Scotland's  Nemeta  brings  us  "Shores  In  Flames"  which  is  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  vocals  are  also  done  in  a  very  clear  pagan  style  as  well a s  adding  in  some  blast beats  and  grim  black  metal  screams  that  where  not  present  in  the  original  version.

  Italy's  Spiritual  Deception  brings  us  "Father  To  Son"  which  they  take  into  more  of  a  brutal  death  metal  direction  that  is  very  different  from  the  original  version  as  well  as  sounding  like  a  complete  different  track.

  Italy's  Ardeat  brings  us  "Home  Of  Once  Brave"  which  they  take  into  more  of  a  brutal  blackened  death  emtal  style  that  is  completely  different  from  the  original  viking  metal  version  of  the  songs.

  New  Zealand's  Beltane  brings  us  "One  Rode  To  Asa  Bay"  which  is  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  as  well  as  being  very  melodic  at  the  same  time  and  the  band  stays  away  from  the  black  metal  approach  of  their  original  material  to  remain  true  to  the  classic  viking  metal  style  of  the  song.

  Italy's  Hymnodya  brings  us  "Under  The  Runes"  which  is  a  lot  more  in  a  death  metal  style  than  the  original  while  also  keeping  the  viking  metal  spirit   that  was  very present  on  the  track  when  it  was  released. 

  U.S.A's  Ob  Nixilis  brings  us  "Bond  Of  Blood"  which  starts  out  with  some  clean  playing  before  going  into  more  of  an  atmospheric  viking/black  metal  direction  which  also  mixes  in  a lot  of  melodic  death  metal  elements.

  Australia's  Heathen  Foray  brings  us  "Man  Of  Iron"  which  they  mix  some  melodic  death  metal  and  pagan  black  metal  elements  into  the  track  as  well  as  keeping  the  feeling  of  the  original  track.   

  Chile's  Raving  Panic  brings  us  "The  Stallion"  which  is  done  in  a  very  melodic  yet  epic  pagan  metal  style  while  also  adding  in  some  elements  of  folk  metal  and  the  track  also s ticks  to  a  slower  direction.

  Brazil's  Hellish  War  brings  us  "The  Woodwoman"  which  starts  out  with  some  acoustic  guitars  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  while  the  vocals  are  done  in  mostly  a  clear  power  metal  style.

  Brazil's  brave  brings  us  "Gods  Of  Thunder  Of  Wind  And  Of  Rain"  where  they  take  the  track  from  Bathory's  viking  metal  era  and  give  it  more  of  a  power  or  traditional  metal  touch as  well  as  keeping  the  heaviness  of  the  original.

  Italy's  Altar  Of  The  Witch  brings  us  "Nordland"  a  track  that  is  very  long  and  epic  in  length  an d  they  take  the  viking  metal  style  of  the  original  and  mixes  it  in  with  elements  of  traditional  doom  metal.

  Columbia's  no  Raza  brings  us  "Ring  Of  Gold"  which  starts  out  with  some  acoustic  guitars  and  synths  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  and  melodic  direction  and  the  band  also  brings  in  more  of  a  death  metal  style  to  the  song.

  Brazil's  Buaiteoir  brings  us  "Foreverdark  Woods"  a  track  that  is  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  the  band  also  brings  in  more  elements  of  folk  music  to  create  a  different  version  of  the  original  song  as  well  as  remaining  true  to  its  pagan  roots.

  Brazil's Battle  Raven  brings  us  "Mother  Earth,  Father  Thunder"  which  starts  out  with  some  clear  pagan  chants  and  vocals  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  yet  melodic  direction  that  also  captures  a  very  epic  atmosphere.

  Italy's  Manehidag  closes  the  compilation  with  "Vinland"  where  they  take  the  viking  metal  style  of  the  original  version  and  also  mix  it  in  with  a  touch  of  black  metal style  to create  a  more  original  version.

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a very  great  sounding  compilation  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  fans  of  all  of  the  different  phases  of  Bathory.  8  out  of  10.

Ulcerate/Stare Into Death And Be Still/Debembur Morti Productions/2020 CD Review

 

  

Ulcerate  are  a  band  from  New  Zealand  that  has  had  music  reviewed   before   in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  technical  form  of  death  metal  with  elements  of  black  and  sludge  metal  and  this  is  a  review   of  their  2020  album  "'Stare  Into  Death  And  Be  Still"  which  was  released  by  Debembur  Morti  Productions.

  Atmospheric  sounding  synths  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  while  most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  Dark  sounding  melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  death  metal  growls  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  technical  style  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  elements  of  sludge  metal  are  also  added  into  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  fast  tremolo  picking  showing  an  influence  of  black  metal  as  well  as  some  dissonant  structures  also  being  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing.  one  track  also  introduces  clean  playing  onto  the  recording  and  at  times  the  music  also  gets  very  atmospheric  sounding.  The  production  sounds  very  prof4essional  while  the  lyrics  cover  death  reverence  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Ulcerate  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  technical  death  metal  with  some  elements  of  black  and  sludge  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Lifeless  Advance"  "Inversion"  and  "Dissolved  Orders".  8  out  of  10.

  -S-  are  a  duo  from  Poland  that  plays  a  musical  style  that  they  describe  as  being  'dark  occvlt  funk'  which  shows  the  music  mixing  doom/death  metal  with  a  clarinet  and  elements  of  experiential,  funk  and  jazz  music  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2020  ep  "Zabijanie  Czasu  I"  which  was  released  by  I,  Voidhanger  Records.

  Drums  start  off  the  ep  along  with  some  clarinets  and  bass  guitars  a  few  seconds  later  while  the  music  also  has  its  avant  garde  and  experimental  moments.  The  spoken  word  parts  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  ritualistic  feeling  along  with  the  slower  sections  also  adding  in  the  heaviness  of  doom  metal.

  The  only  track  that  is  presented  on  the  recording  is  also  over  26  minutes  in  length  while  the  music  also  adds  in  elements  of  jazz  and  funk  music.  The  whole  ep  also  sounds  very  improvised  along  with  some  clean  playing  also  being  added  into  some  parts  of  the  track  as  well  as  some  more  aggressive  vocals  also  being  utilized  at  times.

  -S-  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  avant  garde,  experimental,  jazz  and  funk  music  and  mixes  it  in  with  the  heaviness  of  doom  and  death  metal  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own. The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Polish  and  cover  Occultism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  -S-  are  a  very  great sounding  dark  occvlt  funk  duo  and  if  you  are  looking  for  something  that  is  very  original,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  8  out  of  10.

A Tribute To Tiamat/Antichrist Magazine/2020 Compilation Album Review

 

  Tiamat  are  a  band  from  Sweden  that  has  been  around  for  almost  30  years  and  started  out  playing  more  of  a  first  wave  style  of  black  metal  before  evolving  more  into  a  doom/death  emtal  direction  than  the  goth metal  style  which  they  are  the  most  well  known  for  on  this  is  a  review  of  a  compilation  album  with  bands  doing  cover  versions  of  their  songs  which  will  be  released  by  Antichrist  Magazine  on  September  30th  and  we  will  review  the  tracks  one  by  one.

  Myrholt  brings  us  "Ancient  Entity"  which  starts  out  with  some  dark  yet  heavy  riffing  along  with  some  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  a  few  seconds  later.  The  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  along  with  the  synths  also  giving  the  music  more  of  an  atmospheric  feeling  and  elements  of  doom  metal  can  also  be  heard  in  the  slower  sections  of  the  song  as  well  as  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

  Verdoemd  brings  us  "I  Am  The  King  Of  Dreams"  which  starts  out  with  some  heavy  riffing  along  with  some  blackened  screams  a  few  seconds  later.  When  the  music  speeds  up a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  can  be  heard  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies,  the  song  also  adds  in  a decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and fast  parts  as  well  as  the  solos  and  leads  also  bringing  in  a  very  melodic  style  and t he  vocals  also  use  a  shouting  approach  at  times.

  Pantheon  brings  us  "In  A  Dream"  which  starts  out  with  some  symphonic  style  synths  while  the  track  is  also  very long  and  epic  in  length.  Elements  of  doom  metal  can  also  be  heard  in  the  slower  sections  of  the  song  along  with  the  vocals  being  mostly death  metal  growls  as  well  as  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a   decent  amount  of  melody,  black  metal  screams  are  also  utilized  at  times,  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  briefly.  

  Xenos  brings  us  "Smell  Of  Incense"  which  starts out  with  some  heavy  yet melodic  riffing  while t he  solos  and  leads  bring  in  more  of  an  old  school  metal/rock  style.  Vocals  are  done  in  more  of  A  Celtic  Frost  and  first  wave  black  metal  style  along  with  some  elements  of  doom  metal also  being  added  into  the  slower  sections  of  the  song.  

  Ekku  brings  us  "The  Sleeping  Beauty"  which  starts  out  with some  clean  playing  along  with  some  symphonic  elements  a  few  seconds  alter  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  and  melodic  musical  direction.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  along  with  the  vocals  adding  in a   mixture  of  grim  black  metal  screams,  growls  and  spoken  word  parts.

  Zanpanzer  brings  us  "The  Scapegoat"  which  starts  out  with  some  heavy  riffing  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  high pitched  black  metal  screams. Clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  briefly  along  with  some  clean  playing  also  being  utilized  and  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody,  when t he  music  speeds  up  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  and  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them. 

  Ironthorn  brings  us  "Whatever  That  Hurts" which  starts  out  with  some  slow  doom  metal  style  riffing  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody.  Clean  playing  can  also  be  heard at  times  along  with  the  clean  vocals  also  adding  in  more  of  a  goth  metal  or  hard  rock style  and  the  guitar  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

  The  Revenge  Project  brings  us  "The  Ar"  which  starts  out  with  some  clean  playing  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  Elements  of  doom  metal  can  also b e  heard  in t he  slower  sections  of  the  song   along  with  the  songs  also  giving  the  song  more  of  a  goth atmosphere  and  the  vocals  are  mostly  blackened  death  metal  growls.  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly

  Astralbone  brings  us  "Gaia"  which  starts  out  with  some  acoustic  guitars  and  psychedelic  sounding  keyboards.  Elements  of  doom  metal  can  also  be  heard  in  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  along  with  the  vocals  being  mostly  death  metal  growls  as  well as  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

  Tyhja  brings  us  "Phantasma  de  Luxe"  which  starts  out  with  some  acoustic  guitar  playing  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  neo-folk  feeling.  Grim  black  metal  screams  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  the  track  along  with  some  depressive  sounding  cries  also  being  utilized  briefly  and  the  song  also  sticks  to  a  slower  direction  as  well  as  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

  Alphastate  brings  us  "Brighter  Than  The  Sun"  which  starts  out  with  some  hard  and  heavy  riffing  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  heavy  metal/rock  style.  The  clean  vocals  also  give  the  song  more  of  a  gothic  rock  feeling  and  all  of  the  music  also  sticks  to  a  mid  tempo style.

  Savoath  brings  us  "Cain"  which  starts  out  with  some  nature  sounds  along  with  some  synths  a  few  seconds  later.  Clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  at  times  along  with  the  slower  riffs  also  adding  in  elements  of  doom  metal  as  well  the  clean  vocals  also  adding  in  more  of  a  goth  metal  style  and  touches  of  industrial  can  also  be heard  at  times.

  Rogue  Ogre  closes  the  compilation  with  "Equinox  Of  The  Gods"  which  starts  out  with  some  dark  yet  melodic  riffing  while  the  vocals  are  done  in  a  rough  yet  somewhat  clean  style  as  well  as  adding  in  a  few  growls.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard,  synths  also  give  the  song  more  of  an  atmospheric  feeling  and  female  vocals  can  also  be  heard  briefly  towards  the  end.

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  compilation  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  Tiamat,  black,  doom,  death,  goth  and  heavy  metal.  8  out  of  10.

Nequient Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording of the new album?

We've played local gigs and did some light touring while continuing to write new material. Though we've taken a while to put out a proper full-length, now that we've settled on a stable lineup and a sound we're happy with, we don't plan to have any long waits between our future releases.

2.You have a new album coming out in May, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording and also how does it differ from from previous demo's and ep?

A big change was setting aside the buzzsaw-style HM-2 distortion in favor of a cleaner guitar sound where you can pick out individual notes more easily. Our guitarist, Patrick, was the primary composer for this album, so his style guided the songwriting and choices of tones. The riffs have become more complex and varied than on the band's previous releases. I think our d-beat and sludge roots are still readily apparent, but we're also digging deeper into influences from other metal subgenres. There are some rhythmic left turns along the way that allow our drummer, Chris, to show off his chops even more than in the past. Keenan, our bass player, is the most recent addition to the band, and I think he brings a unique melodic sensibility to the low end that adds some really interesting layers to a lot of sections.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the newer music?

The biggest lyrical inspiration is the current political state of the world, which I find endlessly horrifying and infuriating. The Trump presidency, Brexit, the Flint water crisis, mass shootings, and Middle East turmoil all come up somewhere along the way. I do also find space to address some more personal situations, reference several of my favorite authors, pay tribute to some of the great artists who have died in recent years, and make fun of overly self-important metal guys.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Nequient'?

It's an archaic term that means "not being able." That gives the name both a certain punk rock snarkiness and the benefit of being good for search engine optimization. We have one of those curious situations where the guitarist and bass player who orginally decided to call the band "Nequient" have since departed at different points over the years, but our sound evolved in an organic enough way that we never felt any need to change it.

5.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

We've opened for a lot of great bands, but I think we particularly liked playing in a direct support slot for Zeal & Ardor on one of their first U.S. shows late last year. There were some technical hiccups, but it was great playing in a room where people were all so excited to see this band for the first time. On tour, we tend to have the best times in smaller cities, where crowds are a little more enthusiastic and we always seem to make new friends. Places like Bloomington, Indiana and the Quad Cities have been particularly excellent in that way. Also, there was the time we played at an arcade bar here in Chicago with Big Trouble in Little China projected behind us - that was pretty cool.

6.Do you have any touring or show plans once the new album is released?

Yes, we'll be celebrating the album release on May 18th with a weekend of shows in DeKalb, Illinois, Minneapolis, and Chicago. Then, in July, we'll be headed toward the East Coast for several dates that we'll be announcing shortly.

7.The new album is coming out on 'Nefarious Industries', how did you get in contact with this label?

Several bands we knew, like Mine Collapse and Jar'd Loose from Chicago and Tovarish from Rhode Island, had worked with Nefarious in the past, so I dropped them a line. We share in the same DIY ethos, so we've been enjoying working together.

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of extreme metal and hardcore?

It's too early to say, but we've never been the sort of band to worry too much about catering to a particular market or set of tastes. We just try to make music that we're all excited to play.

9.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

The next album will probably have some more collaborative songwriting with both Keenan and Chris contributing more riffs. I think for the most part we'll continue to write fast, heavy hardcore songs with influences from various forms of extreme metal. However, I could definitely see possibilities for some experiments with longer, more conceptual  pieces, as well as some increasingly technically demanding sections.

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

The band started from a desire to play crust inspired by bands like Amebix, Disfear, Disrupt, and Skitsystem, along with some Eyehategod-style sludge. Influences from metallic hardcore groups such as Converge, Botch, and Coalesce have definitely come into play on some of the more recent material. We also borrow ideas from old school death metal like Death, Morbid Angel, and Obituary, as well as classic black metal bands like Darkthrone.

So far this year, I've been most enjoying the new albums from Antigama, Rivers of Nihil, Lychgate, and Judas Priest. Probably my most anticipated release for the year is Janelle Monáe, though, so we'll see how I feel in a couple weeks.

11.What are some of your non musical interests?

I do a lot of reading and writing. I'm particularly into 19th-century British poetry, science fiction, and comic books.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Thanks for helping us to get the word out about the record. We can't wait to get on the road and play for some new people.

  A  very  fast  and  brutal  grindcore  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  while  the  vocals  also  bring  in  a  mixture  of  high  pitched  screams,  death  metal  growls  and  hardcore  style  shouts  while  the  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  fashion.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  riffs  also  bring  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  along  with  the  songs  also  incorporating  elements  of  d  beat  as  well  as  the  slower  sections  adding  in  touches  of  sludge,  when  tremolo  picking  is utilized  during  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  you  can  also  hear  a  small  amount  of  black  metal  influences  and  a  couple  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  Nequient  plays  a  musical  style  that takes  death  metal,  crust,  grind,  hardcore,  sludge  and  black  metal  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  very  heavy  sounding  recording,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark,  violent,  occult  and  drug  themes.

  Cave  Bastard  are  a  band  from  San  Diego,  California  that  plays  a  mixture  of  sludge,  hardcore  and  death  metal  and  on  this  recording  also  introduces  black  metal  influences  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  album  "The  Bleak  Shall  Devour  The  Earth"  which  will  be  released  in  March  by  Accident  Prone  Records.

  Atmospheric  drones  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  sludge  metal  direction  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  fashion  along  with  some  spoken  word  parts  also  being  used  briefly  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  bringing  in  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats.

  Vocals  are  mostly  death  metal  growls  that  also  have  a  touch  of  hardcore  to  them  while  the  riffs  also  bring  in  a  decent  amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  the  music  also adds  in  elements  of  grindcore  and  black  metal  and  throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  crust  elements  can  be  heard.

  On  this  recording  Cave  Bastard  expand  on  their  mixture  of  sludge,  hardcore  and  death  metal  by  adding  in  elements  of  crust,  grindcore  and  black  metal,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover atrocities,  inhumanities  and  corruption  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Cave  Bastard  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  sludge,  hardcore,  crust,  grind,  death  and  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Throes  Of  The  Devourer"  "massacre  Reaction"  and  "Liar  Betrayed".  8  out  of  10.

  Horizon  On  The  Mute  are  a  band  from  Finland  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a mixture  of  drone  and  doom  metal  with  some  elements  of  industrial,  noise  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  album  "Chiliad  Rite"  which  will  be  released  on  January  31st  by  Anesthetize  Productions.

  Atmospheric  sounding  drones  start  off  the  album  along  with  a  great  amount  of  synths  and  they  also  mix  in  with  the  heavier  side  of  the  music  while  the  riffs  are  very  heavily  rooted  in  doom  metal  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  fashion  as well  as  the  vocals  being  mostly  death  metal  growls.

  All  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  music  also  gets  very  atmospheric  at  times  and  when  the  vocals  get  more  grim  you  can  also  hear  a  touch  of  black  metal  along  with  some  clean  playing  also  being  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording  as  well  as  a  small  amount  of  spoken  word  parts.

  At  times  the  music  gets  very  dark  and  melodic  while  some  of  the  tracks  also  show  the  music  bring  in  more  of  an  experimental  and  avant  garde  style  along  with  some  elements  of  noise  and  industrial  and  all  of  the  tracks  stick  to  a  very  slow  musical  direction but  sounding  different  with  every  track.

  On  this  recording  Horizon  Of  The  Mute  keep  the  heaviness  of  doom  and  death  metal  while  also  expanding  on  the  drone  and  experimental  elements,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Eastern  Roman  Empire  and  exploring  the  unknown  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Horizon  On  The  Mute  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  experimental,  drone,  doom  and  death  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Reformation"  and  "Ars  Magna".  8  out  of  10.

  Inner  Dawn  Foundation  are  a  band  from  Russia  that  plays  a  progressive  mixture  of  sludge,  death  and  funeral  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their self  released  2017  ep  "Saturnalia".

  Doom  metal  style  bass  guitars  start  off  the  ep  along  with  some  drones  while  the  riffs  also  bring  in  the  heaviness  of  sludge  as  well  as  the  vocals  also  bringing  in  a  great  amount  of  tortured  screams  and  at  times  the  music  gets  very  ritualistic  and  all  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in length.

  Brazil's  Jupiterian  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  that  continues  the  sludge,  funeral  doom  and  death  metal  mixture  of  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017  album  "Terraforming"  which  will  be  released  in  November  by  Transcending  Obscurity  Records.

  Field  recordings  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  powerful sounding  bass  guitars  a  few  seconds  later  which  also  leads  up  to  a  heavier  musical  direction  while  the  vocals  are  a  mixture  of  growls  and  screams  and  a  touch  of  black  metal  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording.

  Jupiterian  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to their  mixture  of  sludge,  funeral  doom  and  death  metal  of  previous  releases  while  also  getting  more  experimental  this  time  around,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Mythology,  Cosmos,  Occultism,  Lovecraft,  Horror  and  Science  Fiction  themes.

Kavrilla Interview

1. For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?
We´re a four piece band  from Hamburg, Germany and founded in the beginning of 2016. We all meet each other pretty much by accident via various earlier bands of ours. We talked about our future plans and what we would like to do as a musician and stuff. Then everything happened real fast. We had some rough sketches in the beginning of the sound that should become Kavrila in the end. We developed it more and more and came up with 4 songs resp. our first EP "Rituals I", which we were very satisfied with. All this was created in a very spontanious and relaxed atmosphere without any particular plans or precise sound ideas.

2. How would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recordings?
Shit-blissfulness on the highest we don´t give a fuck-level possible and human chasms set to music.

3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?
To make it short: Exaggerated scenarios, everyday life shit, personal considerations and observations, experiences, times of suffer, a dark view into the future, abstract stuff. All with a certain room of interpretation for the listener. Our music pretty much sets the tone for the lyrics.

4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name “Kavrila"?
It´s a greek word which means something like disgusting, grotesque or brutal. We thought this sums up our idea and sound of the band perfectly.

5. What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?
Hard to say, every show is kind of special cause we try to lose ourselves during every set. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. We played a show in Wuppertal, Germany last year which was very good. The audience kind of came along with us and this is the best that could happened. Lose yourself in the performances alongside the audience. It´s all pretty chaotic and energetic as well I think...

6. Do you have any touring or show plans for the new album?
Of course, we will play shows until the end of the year in Germany. Next year we would like to touch ground in other parts of Europe as well and of course more Germany. We´re still a pretty fresh and new band. You have to enter some stages to get the word out. We´ll make sure that will happen.

7. Can you tell us a little bit more about the labels you have worked with on the new release?
Backbite Records from Karlsruhe, Germany will release the album on Vinyl, CD and digital. We got in touch through a friend who send him our first EP. He came back to us really quickly and was excited of what he heard. He mediate from the beginning that he would like to work with us. That impressed us very much and so all came up gradually. We think we´re in very good hands with Backbite. Breathe Plastic from the Netherlands and Medusa Crush Recordings from Canada will release the tape version of "Blight". Medusa already worked the tape release of "Rituals I"  and Breathe Plastic did some kind of digital release of it. So we kind of had the perfect team for the album release together already and are very happy with the guys who are involved again for the full-length.

8. On a worldwide level, how has the feedback been to your music by fans of extreme metal and punk?
Well, we´re still kind of work on a reputation here in Germany and then we´ll try to conquer the rest of the world, haha. We hope to get some more attention from outside Germany along the release of our debut. We got some guys who will spread the word and hope for the best. Of course this interview is a chance to reach some people who never heard of us as well. So thanks to you for giving us the opportunity!

9. Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
We don´t make plans so much and concentrate on the next day to come. There are some ideas of course but we´ll see if they will be realized. We will release "Blight" on Aug 4th, this is our future for now. 


10. What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
We have many influences and I´m not talking other bands here in the first place. I would say our influences come from our very near environment; people we deal with, the city we live in or shit we go through. Of course these things are connected with music, no doubt. But I think many factors come into play that are shaping your music and on how it comes out of you.

11. What are some of your non musical interests?
All kinds of stuff man. Skateboarding, movies, art and of course our friends and families.

12. Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Burke And Hare Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?
We are a two piece sludge/stoner metal band from Hertfordshire, UK. The band consists of me (Tom) on guitar and vocals and Jack on drums.

2.So far you have released an ep, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording?
Heavy as fuck haha! We were basically concentrating on getting the best riffs that we could but also making it interesting. Like we love to have heavy swing timings to get your hips moving but also some brutal breakdowns where possible.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?
To be honest we don’t really focus too much on the lyrics. Its mostly what comes to mind when we’re jamming the songs out in practise. Rhino Ket is a just a surreal one about what if a Lion had a fight with a Rhino on ketamine? A1M is about driving up and down a motorway while stoned. Those two songs I didn’t really think too much about lyrical content. Suburban Coven was the exception though. It was inspired by an old women who lives round the corner from me and she has her three bins lined up outside her house, she lives at number 6, so when the bins are out they say 666. It just got my imagination going about her being a witch and being part of a coven in the heart of suburban England.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Burke And Hare',?
William Burke and William Hare were two serial killers in Edinburgh in 1828 who robbed graves and murdered people to sell their corpses to a doctor at the Royal College of Surgeons, so he could use them in his anatomy lectures. It sounds like a good basis for a metal band name don’t you think?

5.Currently there are only 2 members in the band, are you open to expanding the line up or do you chose to remain a duo?
We have talked about maybe adding another member but when you get down to it me and Jack have this telepathy with each other. We’ve been in bands together for a long time and its made us tight as a musical unit. We have both done separate things of course but when we get back into that rehearsal space together and back on stage, its like nothings changed and your ready to take on the world together. God that makes us sound like a married couple haha!

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?
I think we’ve enjoyed every single show we’ve done. We’d always come home from a gig and say to each other “that was the best one” only to say the same thing after the next gig. Locally though in Hertfordshire there’s a great metal scene. You always feel the love at the gigs and you end up making friends at every show, whether its yours or someone else's. London is always a treat to play as well. In terms of stage performance, we just try to have fun. Not take ourselves seriously and just have a laugh.

7.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?
We are trying to get some shows together for later this year. Our last show was in April but it feels like an eternity has past so we want to get back to gigging ASAP.

8.Can you tell us a little bit more about 'Moon Song Records'.?
Moon Song Records was a label started by a couple of mates of ours at university. We recorded and released our first song through them last year and we also recorded a couple of other songs with them and released them as the Moon Song Sessions. The label is sadly no longer running but they had a very eclectic roster of artists and we were proud to be the only metal band to have released music through them.

9.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of stoner and sludge metal?
I don’t know about the rest of the world but we’ve had a very positive reaction whenever we’ve played somewhere. People always seem sceptical about whether a two piece metal band can work but they always come up to us and say how massive we’ve sounded for just two guys.

10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
Probably tuning lower. We are suckers for tuning low. Maybe drop Q if we can managed that haha!

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
Eyehategod are the biggest influence on the band, no question about that. But also fuzzy stoner bands like Fu Manchu and Kyuss. The Melvins too, we mustn't forget them. Jack and me love our deathcore as well, so thats why we love our breakdowns. Bands like Suicide Silence, early Thy Art is Murder and Carnifex we listen to all the time on our journeys to practise and gigs. What I’m listening to nowadays is mostly industrial stuff like Throbbing Gristle and Godflesh. Jack I know is partial to some indie and emo like Mac DeMarco and Sunny Day Real Estate. To be fair I love those bands too.

12.What are some of your non musical interests?
Jack is the cool one out of the two of us. He’s a proper good skater. I’m the boring one who likes to read and watch films all day.

Burke And Hare/Self Titled/2017 EP Review

  Burke  And  Hare  a  band  from  the  United  Kingdom  that  plays  a  mixture  of  stoner and  sludge  metal  with  touches  of  black  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  and  self  titled  2017  ep.

  A  very  heavy  stoner  metal  sound  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  some  death  metal  growls  and  sludge  elements  a  few  seconds  later  and  after  awhile  high  pitched  screams  are  added  onto  the  recording  and  they  also  add  in  a  touch  of  black  metal  while  touches  of doom  metal  can  be  heard in  the  slow  riffs.

  At  times  the  riffs  bring  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  briefly  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  and  the  music  also  brings  in  a  great  mixture  of  both  slow  and  mid  paced  parts  as  well  as  adding  in  the  energy  of  punk  rock  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  sound  very  powerful  and  ritualistic  spoken  word  parts  are  added  on  the  closing  track.

  Burk  And  Hurke  plays  a  musical  style  that takes  stoner  and  sludge  metal  and  mixes  it  with  touches  of  black,  death  metal  and  punk  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Burke  And  Hurke  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  stoner  and  sludge  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "A1m". 8   out  of  10.
