The Black Dahilia Murder/Servitude/Metal Blade Records/2024 Full Length Review

Detroit,  Michigan's  The  Black  Dahilia  Murder  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  melodic  form  of  death  metal  with  elements  of  hardcore  and  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2024  album  "Servitude"  which  was  released  by  Metal  Blade  Records.

Field  recordings  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  keyboards  a  few  seconds  later  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  while  the  screams  also  bring  in  elements  of  black  metal.  Death  metal  growls  are  also  utilized  at  times  and  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  brutal  sounding  blast  beats.

Touches  of  hardcore  are  also  added  into  the  mid  tempo  sections  of  the  songs  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  as  well  as  one  track  also  being  a  brief  acoustic  instrumental  before  returning  back  to  a  heavier  direction.

On  this  recording  The  Black  Dahilia  Murder  remain  true  to  the  melodic  style  of  death  metal  that  they  have  established  on  previous  releases.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  a  meteor  that  hits  the  planet  and  people  somehow  survive  and  revert  to  cannibalism.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  The  Black  Dahilia  Murder  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  enjoy  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Panic  Hysteric"  "Asserting  Dominion"  and  "Utopia  Black".  8  out  of  10.

The Black Dahila Murder/Verminous/Metal Blade Records/2020 CD Review

Detroit,  Michigan's  The  Black  Dahilia  Murder  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  the  melodic  style  of  death  metal  with  some  touches  of  hardcore  and  black  metal  from  their  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2020  album  "Verminous"  which will  be  released  in  April  by Metal  Blade  Records.

Nature  sounds  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  lot  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  while  the  vocals  bring  in  a  mixture  of  screams  and  growls  along  with  the  music  also  mixing  in  elements  of  melodic  death  metal.

When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  while the  mid  tempo  sections  of  the  songs  are  very  heavily  rooted  in  hardcore.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  all of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

Tremolo  picking  can  also  be  heard  in  some  of  the  faster  riffing  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  black  metal  feeling and  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  classical  guitars  can  be  heard  before  returning  back  to  a  heavier  direction,  spoken  word  samples  can  also  be  heard  briefly  on  the  closing  track.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  death,  violence,  horror  and  occultism  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  The  Black  Dahila  Murder  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  enjoy  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Godlessly"  "Sunless  Empire"  "The  Wereworm's  Feast"  and  "Dawn  Of  Rats".  8  out  of  10.

Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  a  very  fast  sound  along  with  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  while  the  vocals  are  a  mixture  of  death  metal  growls  and  screams  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

A  great  amount  of  melody  can  also  be  heard  in  the  guitar  riffing  while  all  of t he  musical  instruments  having  a very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  some  elements  of  groove  metal  also  being  utilized  at  times  and  he  also  brings  in  Duran  Duran,  Prince,  Inxs,  and  Tom  Petty  covers  as  well  as  adding  in  a brief  use  of  piano's,  spoken  word  parts,  synths  and  clean  playing,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  real  life  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Death  On  Fire  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  melodic  death  and  thrash  metal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Hope"  and  "You  Got  Lucky".

They  also  bring  in  a  new  wave  version  of  Darkthrone's  "Transylvanian  Hunger"  before  closing  their  side  of  the  split  with  an  original  song  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness  and  nature  themes.

In  my  opinion  Corpse  Paint  And  Dayglo  are  a  very  great  sounding  blackened  new  wave  band  and  if  you  are  looking  for  something  very  original,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Transylvanian  Hunger".

In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  melodic  death,  black  metal  and  new  wave,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  8  out  of  10.

Khiral interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of the new album?

Jouni: Since we got all of the recording done, I think we all suffered a some kind of studio hangover. Now things are looking good and we have been rehearsing and writing new material, so it’s been very exciting times in camp Khiral as the album got released couple weeks ago.

Tuomo: We’ll be having an album release gig in Germany, and after that we get to concentrate on new material. Gigs will be done if interesting opportunities should arise, so like Jouni said, exciting times are at hand.

2.Recently you have a new album, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording and also how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

Jouni: Heavy and crushing! I think we sound... well, fresh and natural. Not overly produced and hopefully that is what people and audience will hear too!

I don’t think that our sound really differs from the past, just evolved and the results are now there for everyone to hear.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the newer music?

Jouni: Tuomo might give you a more detailed and insightful answer, but I think future topics could be anything between slaying dragons and what we feel and see around us, hahah! There could be more personal feelings too.

Tuomo: The lyrics on ’Chained’ involved mainly the downsides of modern society, and I see no reason why these subjects couldn’t be handled even further. If there’s one certainty in this world, it’s the fact that ignorance will never disappear. But personal feelings, experiences and individual situations (eg. getting stuck in airport safety inspection) make good stories too, so there’s really nothing keeping me from writing about whatever I feel like writing. ;)

In a nutshell, whatever I write lyrics about, I want the listener to be able to somehow relate to the subject.

4.Originally the band was known as 'Ivana Red' what was the cause of the name change and also the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Khiral'?

Jouni: I think ‘Ivana Red’ was more of a “pop” oriented style of music, because of Mari (singer at that time).

And when Mari left the band, rest of the guys changed the name and style! And knowing the guys it’s only natural that they started to play more and more heavier stuff.

If my memory serves me correctly, name Khiral came from chiralization, which means some kind of mirror effect, opposites!?!

Tuomo: Yeah, that’s pretty much the meaning of it, things having two sides.

5.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

Jouni: Well, best show is always the one coming up, meaning all of our shows are just pure greatness and we always try to top the previous one. 😂

We’re just getting started and all shows so far have been great and we are always excited to play live. Of course there is always something to improve. I like to think our stage performance is energetic and fun, at least we have fun on stage and hopefully it shows to audience too!

6.Do you have any touring or show plans for the new album?

Jouni: Well, there’s always something cooking in our Khiralpot, but they are more of long distance plans at the time.

As I’m writing this we all sit on a plane on our way to Germany to play a show in Munich.

Tuomo: Khiralpot, I like it! That’s a keeper! And yeah, there are plans, but we’ll see what happens. ;)

7.Originally the band played more of a hardcore style, what was the decision behind going into more of a metal direction?

Jouni: As I said above, I think that Mari leaving the band is the main reason that Khiral evolved into what it is today. Final touche-ups took place when Tuomo and I joined the band in  early 2016 and when Markus [drummer] started to give us heavier beat in spring 2017.

8.On a worldwide level how the feedback been to your music by fans of extreme metal?

Jouni: So far feedback has been great, I think people really like what we are doing! Of course we realize that we can’t please everyone and there’s always going to be someone who thinks we suck ass. That’s just the way it is!

Tuomo: There have been many positive reviews on ’Chained’ around the world, and great number of radio stations focusing on metal have played our music, and that’s absolutely wonderful. Many people have found us and expressed their liking towards what we’re doing, and it’s just amazing to see how Finnish metal is appreciated around the globe.

9.What is going on with the other bands or musical projects that some of the band members are a part of?

Tuomo: I do vocals in this Motörhead tribute band called Iron Wrist. We’re throwing gigs every now and then. Me and Jouni also have a project band called Bloodruin, which is a sort of an outing valve for all that music that Jouni has in his head but doesn’t quite fit in Khiral’s concept. Joni plays bass in a death/thrash band Sorrowed.

10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Jouni: Hopefully we evolve musically as a band. I don’t want to make ‘same’ album over and over! You got to grow to keep things interesting.

Luckily, our new “in writing” material seems to do just that, it’s very interesting period going on in Khiral. Now, don’t get me wrong. I love the older songs and our debut album ‘Chained’, but those songs are from the period when Tuomo wasn’t in the band, I wasn’t in the band and Markus wasn’t in the band so it’s a kind of coalition of ‘old’ Khiral and current Khiral. We all put our little stamps on the songs that made them what they are, and I’m proud of them, but now we have a whole new situation when there are ideas flying around and we’re starting to put them together and everyone is giving their 110% from the start!

Tuomo: Couldn’t have said it any better. We now have two guitarists with quite different approach to composing songs,  so it’ll be an adventure in itself to see what the new material will end up being like. But rest assured, it’ll be Khiral all the way!

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Jouni: Wow, let’s try to keep it short, I think we all listen a bit different bands and only thing common I can think of is Metal, in general!

I know Matti got his kicks from Lamb Of God and Behemoth among others and Joni is our true old school death metal guy who got lost in delta blues a while ago!

Markus is a bit mystery to me on this subject and Tuomo just listens about everything from Battle Beast to Cradle Of Filth.

Personally my biggest influences were mainly in old school thrash, Metallica, Testament, Slayer, Exodus etc. but of course you gotta have some Kiss and W.A.S.P and Mötley Crue and Whitesnake in the mix and not forgetting Pantera!

Nowadays, it’s pretty much the same but also a lot of acoustic stuff like Blackmore’s Night and as a Finn you can’t forget Tapio Rautavaara!

Tuomo: Jouni summed it up pretty well there. As for myself, like JJ mentioned, I like to listen to many kinds of heavier stuff, perhaps mainly focusing on melodic death metal, folk metal, viking metal and symphonic black metal.

12.What are some of your non musical interests?

Jouni: Recently I started drawing again, I haven’t done it in years so it’s been really fun to try to draw something. I also like writing my feelings on paper, kind of like diary but more in a lyrical form or poem.

Tuomo: I read a lot. And I mean a lot, I have a book in reading all the time. I can’t even go to sleep without reading first! And I also study Japanese martial art tradition.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Jouni: Enjoy the album and see you on the gigs! Horns up!

Tuomo: Behave! ;)

Corbian Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

Corbian was founded in 2014 in Offenbach, Germany. Our music combines elements of Melodic Death Metal with Black and Thrash Metal influences.

2.Recently you have released your first album, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording?

Thick. We have a dominant bass, brutal Guitars, brutal Drums and aggressive Vocals. It's a full slap in the face.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?

Our Lyrics focus on aggression, hate, anger and loss."The Darkness" is our take against war. But it's not only the lyrics that transport the message, you can feel it in our music, too.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Corbian'?

The name "Corbian" was coined by our old guitarist. It's actually a non-sense word, that just sounds cool - it has no deeper meaning.

5.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

We try to be as energetic as possible when playing live. It's great fun, because when you give 100%, the crowd will, too. Our best shows were in our home domain, like at the Hanauer Bürgerfest or in Frankfurt.

6.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?

We always have shows planned. We'll be doing some around Frankfurt in the near future. As far as touring we're hoping to be able to hit the road through Germany and/or Europe this year.

Organisation for that has already begun.

7.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?

We're not actively looking for a label, since we feel that you don't necesserly need a label these days anymore. We had offers, but none were attractive to us, yet.

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of melodic and extreme metal?

Feedback has been great. A lot of people from everywhere contacted us after the release and we're featured in a variation of Online Radios worldwide, it's amazing!

9.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

With "Supremacy of Fire" we set a solid ground for our musical development. For the future we try to stay true to our Death and Black Metal roots, but we also try to write more challenging and slightly more complex stuff for your enjoyment.

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Our biggest influence is definitely Amon Amarth. We have various other influences, to name a few: Black Sabbath, Slayer, Behemoth, Slipknot, Immortal,... We love those bands and still listen to them today.

11.What are some of your non musical interests?

We all share a mutual love for gaming, however we don't really have the time for great hobbies besides our commitment to music.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

We want to thank all our fans and listeners for their overwhelming support this far. It's been a real blast!

Throughout  the  recording  you  can  hear  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  the  solos and  leads  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  fashion  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments sounding  very  powerful  and  as  the  album  progresses  back  up  gang  shouts  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  one  track  also  brings  in  a  brief  use  of  classical  guitars

A  very  hard  and  heavy  sound  starts off  the  ep  along  with  a  great  amount  of  melody  and  the  vocals  use  a  good  mixture  of  death  metal  growls  and  high  pitched  screams  while  the  guitar  solos  and  leads  remain  true  to  a  melodic  musical  direction  and  you  can  hear  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  in  the  faster  sections  of  the  music.

Throughout  the  recording  you  can  hear  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  the  mid  tempo  sections  are  very  heavily  influenced  by  metalcore  and  they  also  add  in  a  small  amount  of  shouts  and  spoken  word  parts  and  the  whole  ep  remains  very  heavy  from  beginning  to  ending  of  the  recording  and  they  also  bring  in  a  cover  of  Dismember's  "Of  Fire".

Six  Reasons  To  Kill  creates  a  recording  that  shows  the  music  getting  more  heavy,  brutal  and  aggressive  sounding  while  also  remaining  true  to  the  music  style  they  have  established  on  previous  recordings,  the  production  sounds  very professional  while  the lyrics  cover  politically  and  socially  critical  topics.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Six  Reasons  To  Kill  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  enjoy  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Rote  Erde".  8  out  of  10.

Letallis Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of the new album?

Since the release it's mainly been promotion. But overall the main focus/next big step is getting the band line up together so we can start playing live as much as possible. Hopefully even tour in the near future.

2.Recently you have released a new album, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording and also how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

Overall I'd say most songs are about the journey. Where on the last album we weren't as adventurous with where the songs went, on Resonate a lot of it has sections that don't repeat often. Instead of having the song build up to one part its more about having multiple points of interest in the song and how they can mesh together. Also the production took a step up from the last record.

3.Originally the band played thrash, what was the decision behind adding in more of a melodic and brutal death metal sound?

I think just being younger with the influences at the time and wanting to play fast was the main drive. As time's gone by the music I've listened to has gotten heavier so thats definitely crept into the writing. Also wanting to have more memorable riffs/melodies to get stuck in someones head was more important this time around.

4.This is the first album to be released in 6 years, can you tell us a little bit more about what has been going on during that time frame?

After releasing our first album, The World Awakened, all the members except myself went in different directions. Between then and now a lot has happened. Going to school for audio engineering, jobs, and life in general getting in the way. Building the album myself from start to finish was a great learning process, but it had a lot of moments of doubt and uncertainty of what to do next. Along with other things in my life keeping my busy that's what ultimately led to the album taking so long.

5.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the newer music?

The concept behind Resonate was to create music that would hit home with people on a very fundamental level. Good or bad. Some are more positive like Within Reach/Resonate while others explore a darker side of what it means to be human (Idle Fears, The Darkness Of Mere Being). And a few others are just my adoration for certain aspects of nature/the universe (In All Forms/Viridian). The album explores many different topics all of which resonate deeply with me and reflect the aspects of myself during the making of the record.

6.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Letallis'?

At the time the band chose a few normal english names but never felt we landed on something solid. One day at practice we just went on a latin dictionary site and messed around. We landed on Letallis and it seemed metal enough. It means "mortal, deadly, or fatal". Today I kind of like the idea of it being something mortal. Something human.

7.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

Playing a day spot at the Vans Warped Tour was a big highlight for us. We also had the chance to play at the Starland Ballroom which was amazing. Just being able to play the same places as your favorite bands and idols is a blast. We like to keep a tight sound live, and we always make sure to bring lots of energy and have fun. When the crowd see's us goofing around and rocking it out they want to join in.

8.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?

It ultimately it depends on when the band comes together. Hopefully sooner rather than later. I'd like to have a full band for gigs and touring.

9.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?

A label would definitely be good but going the DIY route has helped me learn a lot. It pushes one to figure out what steps to take and really hone in on a vision. Some albums have been sent to labels so hopefully that'll start a dialog between us.

10.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of extreme metal?

It's been great. Thanks to the bandcamp analytics I've been able to see who's been checking out the music from all over the world. A lot of underground metal sites from places like Russia, Italy, Mexico and more. Places I would have never find out otherwise. So globally its looking pretty good.

12.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

I'd like to expand a bit of everything. Heavier, softer elements along while weaving in more diverse musical influences with  a lot of dynamics. Overall just exploring the different places I can go with it. Even expanding lyrical topics.

13.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

During our first record Lamb of Gods Ashes of the Wake was a big influence on us. The guitar riffs and song structure played a big role. Lately the metal I listen to on a regular basis has gotten a bit heavier. Bands like The Black Dahlia Murder, Behemoth, Fleshgod Apocalypse and Revocation have been on a pretty regular rotation. Outside of metal its been a lot of movie soundtracks and a whole bunch of other things.

14.What are some of your non musical interests?

I'm pretty rusty but I love to skateboard. There are some pretty killer parks in NYC. That along with doing sound design for post in my spare time. Just exploring the city in general is always an adventure.

15.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Don't forget to download a free copy of Resonate on bandcamp. It was a definitely journey for me and hope it is for everyone else out there!

Letallis/Resonate/2014 Full Length Review

Letallis  are  a  band  from  New  York  that  plays  that  plays  a  mixture  of  progressive,  melodic  death  metal  and  metalcore  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2014  album  "Resonate".

A  very  dark  and  melodic  guitar  lead  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  heavy  riffing  and  a  few  seconds  later  metalcore  style  growls  are  added  into  the  music  and  the  music  at  times  also  gets  brutal  when  blast  beats  are  utilized  and  after  awhile  the  music  starts  incorporating  more  melody  and  progressive  metal  elements.

Most  of  the  music  sticks  to  mostly  a  slow  to  mid  paced  musical  direction  while  they  also  have  their  fast  moments  at  times  and  also  utilizes  a  decent  amount  of  death  and  metalcore  style  breakdowns  and  as  the  album  progresses  clean  playing  and  acoustic  guitars  can  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  progressive  feeling  when  they  are  utilized.

When  high  pitched  screams  are  utilized  briefly  they  bring  a  black  metal  feeling  to  the  bands  musical  style  and  on  some  tracks  the  music  starts  going  for  more  of  a  modern  day  melodic  death/thrash  metal  sound  along  with  a  brief  use  of  nature  sounds  and  towards  the  end  of  the  album  the  band  also  brings  in  a  couple  of  long  and  epic  in  length  tracks  along  with  a  brief  use  of  clean  singing  vocals.

Letallis  takes  the  progressive  metal  genre  and  mixes  it  in  with  the  heaviness  of  melodic  death  metal  as  well as  bringing  in  elements  of  metalcore  to  create  an  album  that  is  still  very  extreme  yet  original  at  the  same  time,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  for  being  a  self  released  recording  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  real  life  themes.

In  my  opinion  Letallis  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  progressive  metal,  melodic  death  metal  and  metalcore  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Within  Reach"  "Dissonant  Mind"  'How  Vast"  and  "Resonate".  8  out  of  10.

Thanks For Your Pain Interview

1)For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

The band was founded in 2011. Few years were spent for searching style of music in which we would like to play. Finally as result of our searching, has become our album "Anywhere Is Everywhere" which was released at begining of 2014. Previously we have issued EP "The Road To Eternity" and single "Change Your Fate", but they can’t be compared to our full-length album.

2)Recently you have released a new album, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording?

We have put all the best which we could during the process of recording our full-length album "Anywhere Is Everywhere". Heavy and melodic riffs, melodic vocal, which no one can repeat, strong bass which has similar sounding with Korn and Madvayne, inexpressible , strong , difficult and beautiful parties of solo guitar's. Moreover, acoustic guitars, fortepiano and cello, are presented in the bonus-track "My Motherland", where we have shown, that we can use not only electro instruments, but also classical as well.

3)On the album you had mostly melodic vocals, are you planning on using aggressive vocals in the future or do you prefer to keep the vocals melodic?

By now we are working on the new album, we leave the possibility presence of extreme vocal, but anyway we'll still keep melodic vocal in a priority.

4)What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?

Texts in the album mainly based on relations between man and woman. Love and all the consequences of it, as well as pleasures and disappointments. The new full-length album will be different from first.

5)What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Thanks For Your Pain'?

For everyone this phrase has personal meaning , every may find unique understanding for itself. Pain, which was inflicted by someone, can change all your life, in our case for sure, only for better.

6)What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

Each our performance on the stage is the best. We don’t split them by the quality. From every our concert we obtain a huge volume of satisfaction and this gratification is increasing every time.

7)Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?

We are planning to visit a huge amount of festivals in coming 2015. We have applied for a lot of concerts throughout Ukraine and we’re waiting for response from organizers. At the moment we have agreed for few concerts in Kiev.

8)On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of melodic, extreme metal and metalcore?

Every day appear new feedbacks. As the saying goes: Every Jack has his Jill. Mostly of feedbacks are positive, listeners enjoy the music what we make.

9)Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

We’ve almost accumulated all material for 2nd full-length album. Unfortunately I can't divulge any information concerning our new album according to our contract with label. But nevertheless few word I will say, our new album will become more heavy and interesting then "Anywhere Is Everywhere", we are not left without attention lovers of ballads, probably 2 ballads will be included to the album. Guitar riffs will become more interesting and difficult. We’ll do all the best in order to gladden our listeners.

10)What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Each member of the band has his own taste of music. The album which was released at the end of 2013 had succumbed of direct impact following bands: Korn, Metallica, In Flames, The Agonist, Mudvayne, Godsmack и Disturbed.

11)What are some of your non musical interests?

Mainly we’re trying to devote all our free time for the music. Repetitions and creating new songs. So, if say honestly, our main hobby is music.

Electronic  music  sounds  start  off  the  album  before  adding  in  a  more  heavy  and  melodic  sound  along  with  some  clean  singing  vocals  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  the  solos  and  leads  the  band  uses  continue  the  melodic  tradition  of  the  bands  musical  style.

There  is  a  good  mixture  of  both  clean  and  heavy  parts  throughout  the  recording  and  after  awhile  the  band  starts  bringing  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  after  awhile  acoustic  guitars  can  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording   along  with  a  few  power  ballads  being  utilized  at  times.

Soulnerve Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before can you tell us a little bit about the band?
We are a melodic thrash metal band from the Zevenaar, a city in the south of The Netherlands. When we started out back around 2004 as a 4 piece band we played mainly covers of bands like Arch Enemy, Carcass and At The Gates. After a year we started writing songs, did quite a few shows and finally the band disbanded around 2008. A few years ago I breathe new life in Soulnerve and started writing new songs which finally led to what would become our first full-length "The Dying Light" which was released last month (July).
The revived Soulnerve, can be seen as a project at this time and that's a choice I made for a reason. I see so many guys starting a band with great ideas and plans and stuff and finally going their own way after a couple of rehearsals because they musically just can't get along. I wanted to come up with a decent debut and find the right guys after the releases so we can basically skip that frustrating and time wasting part and have kind of a kick start. Currently we are of course promoting our album as much as we can and we are already doing some auditions but we are still looking for some musicians to join us. So, lots of things going on. (STEPHAN)

My reason to join the band was really an adventure in what I was able to deliver with my voice. My recording experience was quite limited but I did have the necessary equipment to deliver high quality recordings to help Soulnerve out. It was a project that during the process has grown on me once I saw all the songs take shape both musically and production-wise and all of the fun that came with it. Looking back, it was really cool to do and I am proud what we have created! I hope Soulnerve will have a complete line-up asap and if my if my voice is needed once more, I am more than happy to oblige.  (KEVIN)

2.Recently you have released a new album, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording and also how does it differ from the demo you had released in 2008?
We take our influences from a wide variety of styles, from 80's and 90's thrash, melodic (death) metal, new wave thrash and metalcore. I am are more into new wave thrash and Gothenbörg death metal and Kevin (vocals) for example is a huge fan of metalcore and deathcore. We try to use the best of both our own qualities and all the music we are influenced by.
In think that our demo wasn't that much different from our debut album in terms of musical direction. On the other hand, for this full-length debut we took quite some  time to shape the songs as perfect as we could and i think that the songwriting is a lot more mature then it was back in 2008. Our skills and vision developed over the years and that also had it's effect on the songwriting process for our debut album. We wanted the album to be in your face, tight, catchy and with a nice balance between aggressive thrash riffs and slower and more melodic  even melancholic parts.  We also had this album mixed in a professional studio while the demo was just a rough recording with a poor mix.
(STEPHAN)

3.According to the Metal Archives page the band was broken up for a couple of years what was the cause of the split and also the decision to reform?
Well, this is kind of a complicated situation because I wasn't really involved in the split up of the band so I actually don't know the exact reason behind it. After a few years of playing with the band members who were in Soulnerve by that time (2004-2007) I wasn't really happy with the chemistry in the band so i decided to leave. The remaining band members continued with the band and found a replacement guitarist but apparently things didn't work out for them as well anymore so they split up around 2008.  In the years after I left the band I've always been playing guitar and writing and recording new songs. Music is one of the most important things in my life you know, and I always felt the urge  to write music and keep doing this. After a few years I decided to take up where we left off, since I was one of the founding members of Soulnerve and the others had called it quits and were focused on other music. (STEPHAN)

4.The band has been around on and off since 2005 but so far has only released one demo and one full length, other than the break up what was the cause of the gaps between releases?
That's mainly explained above. I don't know why the remaining members have never recorded anything new after I left the band. I started writing new songs around 2010 and took quite some time to do some demoing, finding the right singers and to write the best songs  I could come up with. I also recorded everything except for the scream vocals in my own home studio and I took care of the whole production and promotional process. When this has got to be done next to a full-time job, it will take some time though. (STEPHAN)

5.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?
All the lyrics on the album are about humanity as an uncontrollable machine and the many aspects of our behavior that will probably lead us to our own demise in the end. It’s also about the struggle of living in a society that hardens both emotionally and physically and where it’s hard to find a balance and stay focused on what really matters in life. Songs like ‘They Come For Us All’ and ‘The Dying Light’ for instance are mainly focused on the downfall of the world as a result of human actions, motivated by greed and corruption without considering those consequences. But as with most music, the topics are open for the listeners own interpretation. Take the track ‘My Demise’, which deals with eternal struggles someone can have, whether this means dealing with an addictions or living with some terrible secret, it’s up to the listener to decide. The entire album covers a brought arrange of things that are terribly wrong with the human race, both on a personal and global level. (KEVIN)

6.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Soulnerve'?
There's no specific meaning behind that name, it just popped up in my mind. It sounds cool though, so I think it doesn't necessarily need to have a real meaning. The fictional contraction between the words Soul and Nerve is an interesting one though because one can interpret it as the physical connection with the soul through a nerve system or something like that. Even while the soul is an intangible concept on itself. We definitely want to touch people with our music, inspire them and make them feel good while listening to our stuff, so in that case you can consider the band name is representing this in a certain sense. (STEPHAN)

7.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?
The last shows we did with Soulnerve were almost ten years ago, but we definitely  did some great ones back in the days. Some of the local metal fests and club shows we played in The Netherlands were pretty cool as well as the outdoor festivals.
I think it's important to create a certain energy on stage and share it with your audience.
Most of the times we were one of the opening bands and it's up to you to get the crowd moving and make them having a good time. Besides that, nobody wants to watch a band who's stage performance is boring as hell and in that case you definitely don't stick in anyone's mind, that's for sure. But our music is pretty technically so you'll always need to find a middle way between cutting loose on stage and being able to perform the songs well enough, without making that much mistakes.  (STEPHAN)

8.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?
Not yet. At the moment we are trying to find the right musicians to get a full line-up so we can start practicing the songs and become a live band. So, anyone interested,  keep an eye on our website and contact us in case you think you are the right person of filling a spot in our line-up. (STEPHAN)

9.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?
Actually, we haven't sent out any CD's or demo's to any label. As mentioned, Soulnerve 2.0 as i like to call it started out as a project, that's why I worked with sessions singers (Koen and Kevin) for example. Every label wants the bands on their roster to play live as much as possible to get lots of attention and that's something we cannot do yet. But with our future releases we are surely interested in working with a label and booking agencies by the time we are ready to hit the stage. (STEPHAN)

10.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of extreme and melodic metal?
Reviews from both fans and magazines/e-zines worldwide have been awesome so far. In most of the magazines our album got a rating of 8 or even 9 out of 10 and even the magazines that are focused on extreme metal seem to be diggin' our tunes. All great so far! We are always interested in new album reviews, so any magazine or ezine that's interested can contact us. (STEPHAN)

11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
The Dying Light is a very technical album with lots of different styles. I never wanted to limit myself to play just solely one metal style and I like to combine interesting elements of a variety of styles. I don't feel the need to create a whole new style (if that's even possible nowadays) but I think we created kind of an distinctive sound when it comes to compositions and riffing. For the future I have got already some ideas of how I can develop our sound even more in terms of songwriting, melody, riffing, diversity and vocals. One thing that we want to do is keeping the tracks more basic without losing the technical feel. "Less is more" you know.  (STEPHAN)

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
When I started playing guitar back in 1997 I guess, there weren't such things as Guitar Pro and YouTube. So if you wanted to learn songs you either had to figure them out by ear, learn them from someone else or study some tab books. By that time I was just getting into metal and really liked albums such as Ride The Lightning (Metallica) and Seasons in the Abyss (Slayer) I basically learned to play all songs from those albums from tabs and by ear. Ride the Lightning certainly laid down a basis for my playing, because it's also one of Metallica's albums where they showed a great balance between hard riffing and fast songs and lots of melody and groove on the other hand.
Later on I really started to get  in to Megadeth. Dave Mustaine is such a great songwriter and he really influenced me as a guitarist. I also really like Marty Friedman's lead playing because of his great sense for melody and the way he builds up his leads for example. His solo's are like a story on their own and he's still one of my all-time favorite players. Nowadays I like to listen to bands like All That Remains (Oli Herbert is an insane guitarist), Killswitch Engage and Darkest Hour. The latter has been an huge influence in the songwriting process for our debut album, because I really like their way of combining the classic Gothenbörg riffing with metalcore, thrash and lots of melody.
When it comes to guitarists, I'm also a big fan of Steve Vai, Satriani, Dimebag Darrell,Vinnie Moore, Jeff Waters (Annihilator), David Davidson (Revocation) and the guys in Shadows Fall for example.  (STEPHAN)

I jumped a bit later in the metal boat, during the early 2000’s. The usual suspect bands like Slipknot, Soulfly and Korn laid a nice foundation for my need of intense, heavy tunes and also left room for me to explore more technically and melodically challenging music which preserved the ‘heavy’ feel to it. My choice to become a vocalist was made after doing a few local shows and experiencing the freedom a singer has to interact with the crowd. Furthermore, I realize every musician looks at this in a different light ( ;) ), but in my opinion, creating lyrics for a song decides what the subject and mood the song carries with it. In a way, the vocalist can become the face of a song, which to me is a very interesting thing to explore. Nowadays, I enjoy mostly metalcore and deathcore bands like Hatebreed (Jasta’s my favorite frontman) The Acacia Strain, Fit For An Autopsy (their newest album ‘Hellbound’ is INSANE), Caliban and Still Remains to name a few. Other bands worth mentioning are Demon Hunter, Devin Townsend, Dragonforce (I loved the last two albums), Def Leppard and dozens more which slip my mind right now. All of the bands I’ve listened to have shaped me in a way to become the singer I am today.  (KEVIN)

13.What are some of your non musical interests?
Travelling certainly is one of my interests. I'd like meeting new people and visiting interesting places. It broadens your horizons and gives a lot of inspiration when it comes to writing new songs and lyrics. Travelling costs money but will make you an even richer person and gives you a lifetime experience. Besides that, I'd like to watch a good movie every now and then, and I'm really into series, at this moment The Walking Dead, Dexter and Sons of Anarchy for example. Besides that i'd like to hang out with friends, family and I really like to spent some quality time in the kitchen. I also do some guitar teaching next to my job which is a fun thing to do. (STEPHAN)
I am a total multimedia enthusiast, which is a polite word to say that I’m a huge nerd. Also, coming up with setup improvements keep me busy to create the best multimedia experience  possible (after hearing the new Opeth album in surround-sound, I’m glad took the effort).I love movies and story-driven games and I’m not ashamed that a few of both have inspired me to go write some lyrics. Visiting new places is also one of my hobbies which I would love to do more often though.  (KEVIN)

14.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
