  Spiracle  are  a  solo  project  from  Denmark  that  plays  a  mixture  of  harsh  noise,  drone  and  ambient  and  this  is  a  review  of  her  2025  album  "Ossiphage"  which  was  released  by  Rope  Or  Guillotine.

  Neo-classical  style  pianos  start  off  the  album  while  the  synths  also  add  in  elements  of  dark  ambient  when  they  are  utilized.  Programmed  beats  can  also  be  heard  at  times  along  with  each  song  also  sounding  very  different  from  each  other  as  well  as  some  drones  also  being  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording.

  Female  vocals  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  album  which  also  gives  the  music  some  ethereal  and  alt-pop  touches  while  some  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic in  length.  Harsh  noises  and  heavy  soundscapes  are  also  added in  some  parts  of  the  music,  when  screams  are  utilized  they  add  in a   touch  of  black  metal.

  New  York's  Gridfailure  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  mixture  of  experimental,  dark  ambient,  noise,  drone,  industrial  and  dark  hardcore  with  elements  of  avant  jazz,  Americana,  classical,  techno,  folk  and  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2025  album  "Sixth  mass-Extinction  Skulduggery  III{'  which  was  released  by  Nefarious  Industries.

  Field  recordings  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  spoken  word  samples  and  dark  ambient  style  synths  a  few  seconds  later.  A  lot  of  the  music  also  captures  a  post  apocalyptic  atmosphere  while  clean  plating  is  also  utilized  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  and  black  metal  screams  are  also  added  on  a  couple  of  tracks.

  Each  song  also  sounds  very  different  from  each  other  while  the  acoustic  guitars  also  add  in  touches  of  folk  music  and  Americana  when  they  are  utilized.  Industrial  style  shouts  are  also  used  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  album  along  with  the  electric  guitars  also  enhancing  the  extreme  metal  and  dark  hardcore  style  of  the  recording  when  they  are used.

  Pavor  Nocturnus  are  a  solo  project  from  Italy  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  goes  for  a  mixture  of  drone,  dark  ambient,  experimental  and  ritual  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2024  album  "Liturgia  Electronica"  which  was  released  as  a  joint  effort  between  Dio  Drone  and  Cyclic  Law.

  Dark  ambient  style  synths  and  choirs  start  off  the  album  while  the  songs  also  mix  in  a  great  amount  of  atmospheric  sounding  drones.  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  experimental  sounding  along  with  the  music  also  mixing  in  a  good  amount  of  orchestra  and  classical  music  elements  and  when  whispers  are  utilized  they  also  add  in  some  ritualistic  touches.

  A  lot  of  the  vocals  are  also  sampled  while  each  song  also  brings  in  a  very  different  style  along  with  some  percussion  also  being  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording.  One  song  also  introduces  programmed  beats  into  the  music  as  well  as  the  synths  also  adding  in  a  variety  of  many  different  sounding  keys,  Gregorian  chants  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  the  closing track  is  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  On  this  recording  Pavor  Nocturnus  takes  drone,  dark  ambient,  experimental,  ritual,  classical  and  orchestra  music  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  very  diverse  recording  while  the  production  sounds  very  dark.

  FrazyL  are  a  solo  project  from  Quebec,  Canada  that  plays  a  mixture  of  dark  ambient,  dungeon  synth  and  neo-classical  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2022  album  "Mon  ODyssee"  which  will  be  released  on  January  21st  by  Epictronic.

  Ocean  sounds  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  dungeon  synth  style  keyboards  a  few  seconds  later  which  also  add  in  a  variety  of  many  different  sounding  keys.  All  of  the  drum  beats  are  also  programmed  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  great  amount  of  dark  ambient  and  neo-classical  elements.

  All  of  the  music  is  also  instrumental  while  all  of  the  tracks  also  sound  very  different  from  each  other.  On  some  tracks  while  the  keyboards  also  bring  in  a  more  tragic  style  at  times  along  with  the  music  also  capturing  the  atmosphere  of  a  movie  soundtrack  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  few  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  electric  guitars  can  also  be  heard  and  towards  the  end  a  small  amount  of  spoken  word  parts  are  also  utilized.

  Billerica,  Massachusetts's  Autumn  Tears  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  mixture  of  neo-classical,  world  music  and  goth  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2021  album  "The  Glow  of  Desperation".

  Tragic  sounding  keyboards  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  elements  of  ethnic  and  world  music  a  few  seconds  later.  Operatic  vocals  and  choirs  are  also  utilized  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  while  the  music  also  mixes  in  a  great  amount  of  neo-classical  elements  and  the  female  vocals  also  add  in  a  touch  of  goth.

  The  songs  also  mix  in  a  great  amount  of  orchestrations  and  stringed  instruments  while  male  vocals  can  also  be  heard  at  times.  When  percussion is  utilized  it  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  tribal  feeling  along  with  each  song  also  sounding  different  from  each  other  and  the  album  also  has  its  symphonic  moments.

  Italy's  solo  project  Julii  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  more  of  an  instrumental  mixture  of  martial  and  neo-classical  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  self  released  2021  album  "Interregnum".

  Dark  soundscapes  and  synths  which  also  use  a  variety  of  many  different  sounding  keys  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  martial  style  drum  beats  a  few  seconds  later.  The  songs  also  mix  in  a  great  amount  of  neo-classical  elements  and  none  of  the  songs  have  any  vocals,  lyrics  or  songwriting  being  utilized.

  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  epic  sounding  while  also  capturing  the  atmosphere  of  an  epic  or  historical  movie  soundtrack.  All  of  the  tracks  also  sound  very  different  from  each  other  along  with  some  of  the  tracks  also  getting  very  tribal  sounding  at  times  and  on  some  tracks  the  music  also  gets  very  militant  sounding.

  On  this  recording  Julii  mixes  martial  and  neo-classical  together  to  create  a  very  epic  sounding  recording  as  well  as  keeping  everything  instrumental  while  the  production  sounds  very  dark.

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  album  between  Agia  Monaxia  and  Lopus  et  Anima  called  "Autumn  Desert"  which  was  released  by  Submersion  Records  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Agia  Monaxia  a  duo  that  plays  a  minimalist  mixture  of  ambient  soundscapes  and  atmospheric  drones.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  atmospheric  sounding  drones  while  their  track  is  also  over  25  minutes  in  length.  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  minimalist  sounding  along  with  the  music  also  adding  in  some  ambient  style  soundscapes  and  a  small  amount  of  melody  as  well  as  keeping  everything  instrumental .

  Cinematic  sounding  synths  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  their  side  of  the  recording  and  ass  the  track  progresses  acoustic  guitars  are  also  added  into  the  music  along  with  some  drum  beats  also  being  added  into  certain  sections  of  their  track  while  the  production  sounds  very  dark.

  In  my  opinion  Agia  Monaxia  are  a  very  great  sounding  minimalist  mixture  of  of  ambient  soundscapes  and  atmospheric  drones  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  duo.

  Next  up  is  Lopus  et  Anima  a  solo  project  that  plays  a  mixture  of  ambient  soundscapes  and  neo-classical.

  His  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with in  almost  silent  sound  before  adding  in  some  atmospheric  sounding  drones.  His  track  is  also  over  24  minutes  in  length  while  the  synths  also  bring  in  elements  of  ambient  and  cinematic  music  along  with  all  of t he  music  also  being  instrumental  as  well  as  the  stringed  instruments  also  showing  some  influences  of  classical  music  and  the  production  sounds  very  dark.

  In  my  opinion  Lopus  et  Anima  is  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  ambient  soundscapes  and  neo-classical  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  solo  project.

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  ambient  and  drone.  8  out  of  10.

  Aythis  are  a  solo  project  from t he  Netherlands  that  plays  a  mixture  of  shoegaze,  post  rock,  ethereal,  ambient,  neo-classical  and  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  her  self  released  2021  album  "Secrets  From  Below".

  Ambient  style  keyboards  start  off  the  album  while  the  clean  playing  also  adds  in  elements  of  post  rock  and  shoegaze.  Some  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  the  vocals  being  done  in  a  very  clean  yet  ethereal  style  as  well  as  all  of  the  drum  beats  are  also  programmed  and  the  music  also  has  its  atmospheric  moments.

  When  electric  guitars  are  utilized  they  also  add  an  influence  of  doom  metal  onto  the  recording  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  Some  songs  also  add  in  a  small  amount  of  percussion  along  with  the  tracks  also  showing  influences  of  gothic  and  alternative  rock  as  well  as  the  album  also  adding  in  a  touch  of  neo-classical  at  times.  when  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  and  the  recording  closes  with  a  cover  of  the  Twin Peals  theme  "Falling".

  Martial  style  beats  start  off  the  album  while  also  adding  in  some  epic  sounding  synths  which  also  bring  in  elements  of  dark  ambient  and  neo-classical.  Choir  style  vocals  can  also  be  heard  briefly  along  with  some  tracks  also  adding  in  dark  soundscapes  and w hen  electric  guitars  are  utilized  they  also  add  in  an  influence  of  extreme  metal.

  His  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  dark  ambient  style  synths  which  also  add  in  a  variety  of  man  different  sounding  keys.  At  times  the  music  also  captures  the  atmosphere  of  black  metal  without  the  heavy  and  distorted  parts  along  with  all  of  the  songs  also  being  instrumentals  as  well  as  each  track  also  sounding  very  different  from  each  other.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  the  song  themes  focus  on  Occultism,  Black  Magick  and  Darkness.

  In  my  opinion  Kleistophobia  are  a  very  great  sounding  black  ambient  solo  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  his  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Dancing  With  The  Goat"  and  "Mephistopheles".

  Next  up  is  Dark  Awake  a  solo  project  who  returns  with  his  mixture  of  ritual,  dark  ambient,  martial,  industrial,  neo-folk  and  neo-classical.

  His  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  dark  ambient  style  synths  and  martial  style  drum  beats  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  an  epic  atmosphere that  is  very  similar  to  fantasy  movie  soundtracks.  Touches  of  neo-classical  can  also  be  heard  at  times  and  spoken  word  parts  are  also  added  on  some  of  the  tracks.

Wynter Arvn/Abysses/Antiq/2021 Full Length Review

 

  Winter  Arvn  are  a  duo  from  France  that  plays  a  mixture  of  neo-folk  and  neo-classical  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  album  "Abysses"  which  will  be  released  in  March  by  Antiq.

  Acoustic  guitars  start  off  the  album  and  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  neo  folk  feeling  while  some  of  the  tracks  are  also  instrumentals.  Percussions  and  classical  guitars  can  also  be  heard  at  times  which  also  brings  in  a  decent  mixture  of  finger  picking  and  full  chords  and  clarinets  can  also  be  heard  at  times.

  Some  of  the  music  also  shows  an  influence  of  90's  era  black  metal  while  all  of  the  tracks  also  sound  very  different  from  each  other..    At  times  the  music  also  captures  a  melancholic  atmosphere  along  with  a  brief  use  of  session  work  from  members  of  Spectrale  and  Skyforger  as  well  as  one  track  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  female  vocals  and  there  is  also  an  Xasthur  cover  which  introduces  grim  screams  unto  the  album  and  male  vocals   are  added  on  the  closing  track.

  Winter  Arvn  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  neo-folk  and  neo-classical  and  mixes  it  together  with  the  melancholic  atmosphere  of  black  metal  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own  while  the  production  also  sounds  very  dark.

  In my opinion  Winter  Arvn  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  neo-folk  and  neo-classical  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  duo.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Nocturene  II"  "Nocturne  III"  and  "Quand  Tombe  le  Jour".  8  out  of  10.

Unalei/Galatea/2020 CD Review

 

  Unalei  are  a  musical  project  from  Italy  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  mixture  of  ethereal,  goth, progressive  and  folk  with  some  touches  of  post  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2020  album  "Galatea".

  Classical  music  style  keyboards  start  off  the  album  along  with  a  brief  use  of  nature  sounds  while  the acoustic  guitars  also  bring  in  elements  of  folk  music  when  they  are  utilized.  Vocals  are  mostly  done  in  a  clean  style  as  well  as  the  music  also  bringing  in  some  symphonic  and  orchestra  sounds  and  the  electric  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.  

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  then  while  the  music  also  captures  a  goth  orientated  atmosphere  at  times.  When  female  vocals  are  utilized  they  also  give  the  music  more  of  an  ethereal  and  operatic  atmosphere  along  with  some  tracks  also  adding  in  percussion's.

  The  songs  also  use  a  variety  of  many  different  types  of  folk  instruments,  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  as  well  as  one  track  also  introducing  whispered  vocals  onto  the  recording  along  with  some  songs  also  being  instrumentals  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts  and  black  metal  screams  can  also  be  heard.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  a  mixture  Italian,  Spanish,  Russian  and  English  and  is  a  concept  album  based  upon  the  discovery  of  roots  through  time  and  space.     

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Unalei  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  ethereal,  goth,  progressive,  folk  and  post  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Anarada"  "Azalea"  and  "Lola".  8  out  of  10.

Spectrale/Arcanes/Les Acteurs De L'Ombre Productions/2020 CD Review

 

  Spectrale  are  a  band  from  France  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  very  hypnotic  and  esoteric  form  of  acoustic  music  with  some  touches  of  post  metal  and  this  is  a  review of  their  2020  album  "Arcanes"  which  was  released  by Les  Acteurs  De  L'Ombre  Productions.

  Cello's  start  off  the  album  while  acoustic  guitars are  introduced  on  the  second  track  along  with  some  of  the  songs  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  Elements  of  neo  folk  can  also  be  heard  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  as  well  as  some  drums  also  being  used  on  most  of  the  tracks.

  Most  of  the  songs  are  also  instrumental  while  the  influence  of  post  rock  can  also  be  heard  throughout  the  album.  Classical guitars  are  also  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording  along  with  most  of  the  tracks  also  sounding  very  different  from  each  other  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  operatic  female  and  male  vocals  can  also  be  heard.  

  On  this  recording  Spectrale  takes  their  esoteric  style  of  acoustic  music  and  mixes  it  in  with  touches  of  post  rock  and  classical music  to  take  their  sound  to  another  level  while  the  production  sounds  very  dark.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Spectrale  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  esoteric  acoustic  music, you  should  check  out this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Le  Soleil"  "Le  Pendu"  and  "La  Papese".  8 out  of  10.

Frank Hall/I Rember You/Cold Spring/2020 CD Review

 

  Frank  Hill  is  a  solo  project  from  Iceland  that  plays  a  mixture  of  dark  ambient,  industrial  and  orchestral soundscapes  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2020  album  "I  Remember  You"  which  was  released  by Cold  Spring  and  is  also  a  soundtrack  to  a  cult  Icelandic  horror  film.

  Dark  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  while  the  synths  also  bring  in  elements  of  dark  ambient  when  they  are  utilized.  All  of  the  drum b eats  are  also  programmed  along  with  the  music  also  capturing  the  atmosphere  of  a  horror  movie  soundtrack  as  well  as  the  music  also  adding  in  a  great  amount  of  industrial  influences.

  Most  of  the  tracks  are  also  instrumentals  while  the  synths  also  bring  in  a  variety  of  many  different  sounding  keys.  Orchestral  sounds  can  also  be  heard  on  some  of  the  songs  along  with  each  track  bringing  in  a  different  style  which  also  gives  the  recording  a  lot  more  diversity  as  well  as  one  of  the  tracks  also  being  long  and  epic  in  length  and  operatic  choirs  are  added  on  the  closing  track

Sagittarius/Songs Of Dream And Death/Die Neue Runde/Pierre Marteau/2020 CD Review

 

  Sagittarius  are  a  duo  from  Germany  that  plays  neo  classical  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2020  album  "Songs  Of  Dream  And  Death"  which  will  be  released  on  November  25th  as  a  joint  effort  between  Die  Neuse  Runde  and  Pierre  Marteau.

  Tragic  sounding  pianos  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  stringed  instruments  in  the  background  which  also  takes  the  music  into  more  of  a  neo  classical  direction. Whispered  vocals  are  also  added  into  some  parts  of  the  recording  along  with  one  track  also  bringing  in  more  of  an  operatic  style  of  singing.

  Orchestra  style  structures  are  also  added  into  some  parts  of  the  music  along  with  the  music  also capturing  the  atmosphere  of  the  mid  19th  century  European  Romantic  era.  As  the  album  progresses  the  song   also  gets  more  darker  and  diverse  sounding  as  well  as  the  album  also  having  its  melancholic  moments,  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  at  times.    

  Sagittarius  plays  a  style  of  neo  classical  that  is  very  dark,  melancholic  and  romantic  sounding.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  a  mixture  of  English  and  German  and  cover  Symbolism, Expressionism  and  Romanticism  as  well  as  reciting  poems  written  by  Stefen  George,  Karl  Wolfsheki,  Par  Langervist  and  Count  Erik  Stenbock  to  music.

  In  my  opinion  Sagittarius  are  a  very  great  sounding  neo  classical  solo  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Kunft-Tag  I"  "Kahl  rekt  der  baum"  "Invictus"  and  "Antithesis".  8  out  of  10.

Gaia Guarda Interview

 

1.Can you give us an update on what is going on with the solo project these days?

Gaia: I just released my debut after spending 6 years working on it. I will admit that basically my life, in the last few weeks, as been preparation for that launch and packing up orders now that it is out.

2.Recently you have released a new album, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style you went for on the recording?

Gaia: I wrote the album without really thinking about what genre it would be part of, now that I have had more time to analyze the music, it fits into the trip hop, more specifically into NeoClassical Dark Wave. I grew up listening to Depeche Mode and Björk, which really influenced the songs on this record. 

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects you explore with the newer music?

Gaia: This record is extremely personal. I feel like the main difference with how I expressed myself in this project is how raw and vulnerable I let myself be.  I used those songs to deal with past trauma, depression and abuse. I did a lot of introspection, thinking about my own destructive behaviors and I kinda deep dive into them and wrote my heart out. The album sounds a bit depressing, but I feel like it is the opposite. I took all my pain and used it to make something positive with it. If there's one thing I hope that people will get from this album is that no matter how hopeless things can get, you can use the pain in a constructive way. 

4.You also have a background in metal, how would you compare your solo material to the metal style you play with your full time band?

Gaia: While I feel like the two genres are very different from each other, I feel like there's still a common ground with some songs. The harp was also used for the latest record of Uriel on a few songs, and we even finished the album with an acoustic song with me and my harp. I also believe that metalheads are one of the most open-minded communities, the album was welcomed with open arms, and I am so so thankful for that. 

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

Gaia: The artwork was done by my good friend Jonathan Sardelis (Synesthema), it's based on a picture from a photoshoot I did this summer. You see me holding my harp with roses and vines around me. I feel like I look like a sea witch, and I am loving it ahah.

6.With your solo project you record everything by yourself but have experience working with a full band, how would you compare the two?

Gaia: It was a lot of fun! I did all the synths at home, then we added the strings on top of the lines I had already written and recorded them at Studio PM in Montreal. 

Piano, strings and harp were recorded there and after a few months I went to Oshawa to record my vocals with Tyler Williams (Lindsay Schoolcraft's producer) and he did the mixing and mastering. I was more stressed since I had more responsibility when it comes to coordinate the musicians, usually with my band I just show up to my recording dates and Phil's (our bassist and second vocalist in Uriel). Now I actually had to be there to make sure my vision was 100% respected. 

7.On the new album you also have a couple of guests, can you tell us who they are and also their contributions to the recording?

Gaia: I have in total 3 guests, the biggest one being Rocky Gray ( original drummer of Evanescence, We Are The Fallen, Lindsay Schoolcraft etc..), he did the drums on all the tracks. I am grateful that he worked on the project, I am a big fan of him since I was a kid. I also got my bandmates Jessica Ricard (cello) and Ariane Paquette (violin) to do the strings on the album, I have to give a mention to Ariane who made Jess and I cry a bunch of time with her amazing violin solos. 

8.The new album was released on 'Pentapus Records', can you tell us a little bit more about this label?

Gaia: It's my own label, after running into scams a few years ago, I decided to release my album by myself. I love octopus, and I felt like Pentapus was a really cool name for a label so this is how it was born :)

9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of darkwave and neo classical? 

Gaia: The reaction has been amazing so far, both from fans of metal and electronic music. I am really thankful, I had no idea how it would be received but so far fans seems to be nicely surprised! 

10.What is going on with your other band 'Uriel' these days?

Gaia: We are into a second lockdown in Montreal at the moment, it makes it hard for us to push the project. We do have new songs on the making at the moment, we are also talking about making acoustic versions of our latest album ! I'm super excited for this, I hope I get to play more harp in the future with them !

11.Where do you see yourself heading into as a musician during the future?

Gaia: I love being an independent musician, so being on a label that isn't mine is not really into what I want for my career at the moment. I am working really hard towards my dream of being able to do music full time, I've dedicated my entire life to this dream. Hopefully, this is what the future has for me, I know that I will keep pushing until I can make this my reality. I also want to release more music, I'm crazing it like crazy lately !

12.What are you listening to nowadays?

Gaia: I've been obsessed with Amy Lee's collaboration with Bring Me The Horizon and also I've been listening nonstop to Lindsay Schoolcraft's new harp album Worlds Away. It's such an amazing and emotional album, can't be more proud of her!

13.What are some of your non musical interests?

Gaia: I love plants, I currently have around 95 plants at my place. My boyfriend and I have a room in our basement dedicated to them! I'm a big fan of begonias, I think they are the craziest looking plants.

  San  Diego's  solo  project  Francis  Roberts  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  his  mixture  of  dark  ambient,  dungeon  synth  and  neo  classical  from  his  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2020  album  "The  Friends  You  Met  Along  The  Way"  which  was  released  on  cassette  by  Pacific  Threnodies.

  Dark  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  percussions  in  the  background  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  tribal  feeling  while  the  synths  bring  in  elements  of  space  and  dark  ambient.  At  times  the  recording  can  also  get  very  cinematic  sounding  as  well  as  adding  in  some  psychedelic  touches.

  After  awhile  the  music  also  starts  mixing  in  more  of  a  dungeon  synth  style  while  most  of  the  music  also sounds  very  improvised.  The  synths  also  add  in  a  variety  of  many  different  sounding  keys  along  with  the  recording  also  showing  an  influence  of  neo  classical,  all  of  the  music  is  also  instrumental  as  well  as  the  only  track  that  is  presented  on  the  album  being  over  30  minutes  in  length,  and  as  the  album  progresses  the  music  also  gets  more  diverse  sounding.

  On  this  recording  Francis  Roberts  remains  true  to  the  mixture  of  dark  ambient,  dungeon  synth  and  neo  classical  that  he  had  established  on  previous  releases  as  well  as  keeping  everything  instrumental  while  the  production  sounds  very  dark.  

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Francis  Roberts  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  dark  ambient,  dungeon  synth  and  neo  classical,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  8  out  of  10.

Taurwen Interview

 

1.For those that have never heard of you so far, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?

Taurwen is the one-man Dungeon Synth project based in Istanbul, Turkey. In this project, I produce a music influenced by the melancholic and mighty atmosphere of the Medieval. Of course, I've been a good listener of Black Metal and Old-School Dungeon Synth for many years, this is a big factor. In old my times, I recorded a lot of compositions on Dungeon Synth and Dark Ambient, but I didn't release them. Finally, I decided to realize the Taurwen project professionally in 2019. I have successfully released my debut album. I keep walking towards the dark horizon.

 

2.In July you had released an album, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style that you went for on the recording?

I recorded the album in about 3-4 months. Actually, I never had a hard time recording this album because I had planned the tracks earlier. As musical style, it contains epic and pastoral elements. On the album, You can easily hear mix of Dark Folk and Neoclassical sounds with Dungeon Synth and Dark Ambient.

3.What are some of the concepts and themes you bring into your musical vision?

Medieval, Nature, Myths, Folklore, Fantasy , Darkness and Sadness. That is all.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Taurwen'?

Taurwen derives the band name from elements named Quenya and Sindarin. It means old-growth forest or virgin forest. So Tolkien's Silmarillion. I'm not a LOTR concept band on my albums, but of course this mysterious world affects me.

 

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

Album cover, a work by Edward Robert Hughes entitled Valkyrie Vigil. Actually, all the artwork on this album belongs to Edward Robert Hughes. His paintings are fascinating, this inspire me.

6.With this project you record everything by yourself, are you open to working with other musicians or do you prefer to remain solo?

I prefer to work completely solo. It makes me feel more comfortable. I like to design the all story myself, and I record it that way, but maybe I can make a split album with a band in the future. this could be good.

 

7.The cassette version of the album was released by 'Hermetic Transmissions', can you tell us a little bit more about this label?

Hermetic Transmissions, a great label based in San Diego, California. This label has released many amazing projects. I'm so happy to work with Luke (label owner) on this album. Released 50 limited pro-tapes (still available).

 

8.On the album you also had the main person behind 'Tir' make a guest appearance on one of your songs, can you tell us a little bit more about his contribution to the recording?

Tir is a very important band to me. He is the first Dungeon Synth band in Turkey. I like listening to his music. We were in communication with Oytun (aka Tir) when I recorded the album. We thought it'd be nice to a duet song with Tir on this album. Also, This album was mastered by Orko Entertainment. It was an honor to cooperate with him. Greetings to Tir!

9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of dark ambient, dungeon synth and neo classical?

I've had great feedback and that makes me so happy. I wonder what people think because it's my debut album.  Thank you, everyone.

 

10.Where do you see yourself heading into as a musician during the future?

I will always continue the Taurwen Project, but I have a side project plan in the future, like Black Metal and Neofolk. I'm waiting for the right time to do this.

 

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Burzum, Mortiss (90's), Summoning, Darkthrone, Emperor are the groups that give the most direction to Taurwen. Apart from this, I'd like to say that I was inspired by some Neofolk and Doom Metal bands. I listen to Ulver's latest album nowadays.

 

12.What are some of your non musical interests?

I love hiking in the woods. I do this very often. Nature is a true treasure of wonders and beauty. Open your heart on the next walk in the forest and deliberately enjoy with all your senses.
