Puppe Magnetik Interview

 

1.For those who have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?

First of all I will introduce myself: I am Aina Vitanen and I am an avant-gardist. Describing anything is always complicated. I could say I try to describe my dimension of my status through my music. I am convinced that I lived years ago, in the form of a heretic nun or a witch, I knew it since I was a child, and I still carry those childhood wounds with me.

2.In June you had released a new album, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style that you felt for on the recording?

It is banal to say it, but my music is a funereal music, for the dead, evocative. I always try to make the sound dirty and raw, that album dates back a long time ago, I have a vague memory of it, even though it is about to come out, it is a very varied album and with an original, ancient, retro sound. There are shadows in my life, in my past and in my present, the presence of these shadows leads me to be reborn in the theater, spectator and author at the same time, and everything echoes in time and reverberates in space, leaves an echo: this is what art and music mean to me, and so I wander among these areas.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects you have explored so far with music?

Difficult question, I don't know, obviously it expresses a sort of surreality of existence, if only because I venture into traditional, remote and abandoned music, absolutely remote styles of exposing oneself, respecting the parameters of the era to which I refer. I don't know exactly what I'm talking about, but I speak as if I had a limited culture, not contemporary, my compositions are very personal, I have never written something for others, I record for myself and publish what I like. My vision is a distorted vision of facts and circumstances and I say without any fuss, it's a fact.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Puppe Magnetik'?

The name was born immediately and by chance, spontaneously. German is familiar to me as the Puppe's idiea, magnetism rendered an electronic idea, but I use an almost archaic term. In addition, if magnetic this doll seems self-propelled, mechanical, almost apparently alive.

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

Of course, I wanted a raw impact, almost black metal, the cover portrays me blindfolded with an image of myself hanging from my neck, in short sewn on, as is used to remember dead people in some countries. It's the cover of me alive celebrating my funeral. It's like wearing a skullcap, I don't have a warning to others but the awareness that nothing in this life makes sense if tomorrow you're dead, and often completely forgotten, since in this life you were of no use at all.

6.With this -project you record you record everything by yourself, are you open to working with other musicians or do you prefer to work solo?

Encouraged by my family, I studied to be a classical musician. But I never adapted to that environment. I hung out with people who in August used a foulard to protect their throat, who didn't drink and who didn't take drugs. At my first audition everyone spoke of me as a prodigy, but then the situation changed. My real expressive vision was totally opposite to theirs. So I set up my own business, I dissociated myself. This has meant working alone in these years, especially to prove to myself whether I was a musician or not. With "Laudans Deum", many doors opened, musicians I was fans of started following me, and this opened a series of collaborations for the future. The next official album will be very extreme, very powerful, and will have many collaborations, I wrote every song specifically for each of them, and it will be a lot of fun.

7.The album was released on 'Rune Serpent Europa', can you tell us a little bit more about this label?

Well I can tell you that I created the label! They didn't exist, I turned to a metal label with my first demo, along with the others. They wrote to me: your album is beautiful but we don't know how to insert it and where.... If you wait a few years, we'll create a label for you. And like in fairy tales: that's what happened, in fact my album has the catalog number RSE001. The label is a sort of consortium between artists, there are 4 or 5 main producers, a very liberal place, kind and attentive people, very professional.

8.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of experimental and underground musical genres?

It's the first time I have a band, so I can't answer you. There are some very dear people who write to me and follow me, in general the press has always had great feelings about me, but my project is still absolutely niche and unknown, but no one here had other expectations.

9.Where do you see yourself heading into as a musician during the future?

Terrible question. I absolutely don't know. If I knew I would already be there.

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

I have a great musical culture, every music has its own atmosphere and its own descriptive moment in which it is worth living. In Berlin I went to reggae parties dressed as a nun, I don't know how to answer you in reality there are many, I would mention Paganini, if it were nothing else for his venereal diseases.

11.What are some of your non-musical interests?

Without a doubt botany, traditional cuisine, traditional life. I study the kind of potions based on psychotropic herbs and alcohol, but I don't think they are legal yet, I would like to market them.

12. Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Yes, I have one: the world is losing itself, it is losing its individuality, having lost its individuality in our sphere, we become uniform. Don't conform, listen to that eagle that glides within you, free it, and follow its instinct. From that moment on, the world that you will have before you will be exactly the fruit of your imagination and you will be able to modify it as you please.

  Puppe  Magnetik  is  a  solo  project  from  Finland  that  plays  a  mixture  of  neofolk,  dark  ambient,  death  industrial  and  avant-garde  and  this  is  a  review  of  her  2025  album  "Laudens  Deum"  which  was  released b y  Rune  Serpent  Europa.

  Distorted  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  avant  garde  classical  music  touches  while  female  vocals  can  also  be  heard  on  a  few  tracks.  Spoken  words  can  also  be  heard  at  times  along  with  some  tracks  also  adding  in  elements  of  neo  folk  and  most  of  the  tracks  also  sound  very  different  from  each  other.

  Percussion's  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  album  while  stringed  instruments  can  also  be  heard  at  times.  The  recording  also  has  its  experimental  moments  along  with  the  synths  also  adding  in  more  of  a  dark  ambient  style  when  they  are  utilized  as  well  as  some  tracks  also  bringing  in  more  of  a  death  industrial  direction  mixed  in  with  some  more  calmer  songs  and  touches  of  goth  and  dance  music  are  also  utilized  at  times.

Demonologists/Rakshasa/Aesthetic Death/Phage Tapes/2025 Full Length Review

 

  Demonologists  are  a  duo  from  Indiana  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  mixture  of  death  industrial,  blackened  noise  and  horror  electronics  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2025  "Rakshasa"  which  was  released  as  a  joint  effort  between  Aesthetic  Death  and  Phage  Tapes.

  Power  electronics  and  atmospheric  sounding  drones  start  off  the  album  while  the  synths  bring  in  more  of  a  dark  ambient  style.  After  awhile  industrial  beats  and  harsh  noises  start  making  their  presence  known  along  with  the  music  also  getting  very  experimental  and  avant  garde  sounding  at  times  and  black  metal  screams  and  demonic  growls  are  also  used  at  times.

  All  of  the  tracks  also  sound  very  different  from  each  other  while  a  couple  of  tracks also  adds  in  a small  amount  of  spoken  word  and  horror/sci-fi  movie  samples.  The  album  also  has  its  ritualistic  moments  along  with  the  heavier  guitars  also  expanding  on  the  extreme  metal  influence  when  they  are  also  introduced  onto  the  recording  and  some  songs  also  add  in  touches  of  goth  rock  and  EBM.

  On  this  recording  Demonologists  take  black  metal,  harsh  noise,  death  industrial,  dark  ambient,  ritual,  experimental,  EBM  and  goth  rock  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  very  diverse  release.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  lyrics  cover  occultism,  horror,  self  destruction  and  death  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Demonologists  are  if  you  are  a  fan  of  death  industrial,  blackened  noise  and  horror  electronics,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Rat  Piss  Receptacle'  "Wet  Wings"  "Samskara"  and  "Symbiosis  Omen".  8  out  of  10.

Terzo/Self Titled/Icons Creating Evil Art/2023 Full Length Review

 

  Terzo  are  a  duo  from  Italy  that  plays  a  mixture  of  drone,  darkwave  and  shoegaze  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  titled  2023  album  which  was  released  by  Icons  Creating  Evil  Art.

  Atmospheric  sounding  drones  and  electronic  sounds  start  off  the  album  while  a  couple  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  Darkwave  style  synths  are  also  utilized  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  along  with  the  electric  guitars  also  giving  the  music  a  heavier  edge  when  they  are  utilized.

  When  clear  vocals  are  added  into  the  music  they  also  give  the  album  more  of  an  ethereal  and  medieval  atmosphere.  All  of  the  drum  beats  are  also  programmed  while  some  of  the  melodies  also  bring  in  elements  of  shoegaze  along  with  the  music  also  adding  in  gothic  rock  and  folk  music  touches  at  times  and  acoustic  instruments  are  also  added  on  the  closing  track.

  Terzo  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  drone,  darkwave,  shoegaze  and  gothic  rock  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  a  mixture  of  Italian  and  English  and  cover  life  and  death  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Terzo  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  drone,  darkwave  and  shoegaze  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  duo.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Walking  Dreams  Awake"  and  "Blue  Crystal  Fire".  8  out  of  10.

Autumn Tears/The Glow Of Desperation/2021 CD Review

 

  Billerica,  Massachusetts's  Autumn  Tears  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  mixture  of  neo-classical,  world  music  and  goth  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2021  album  "The  Glow  of  Desperation".

  Tragic  sounding  keyboards  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  elements  of  ethnic  and  world  music  a  few  seconds  later.  Operatic  vocals  and  choirs  are  also  utilized  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  while  the  music  also  mixes  in  a  great  amount  of  neo-classical  elements  and  the  female  vocals  also  add  in  a  touch  of  goth.

  The  songs  also  mix  in  a  great  amount  of  orchestrations  and  stringed  instruments  while  male  vocals  can  also  be  heard  at  times.  When  percussion is  utilized  it  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  tribal  feeling  along  with  each  song  also  sounding  different  from  each  other  and  the  album  also  has  its  symphonic  moments.

  On  this  recording  Autumn  tears  takes  neo-classical,  world  music  and  goth  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  very  tragic  and  melancholic  sounding  record.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark,  poetic,  melancholic  and  philosophical  themes.

Devil's Looking Glass/Treacherous Autumnal Wisdom/Moonlight Cypress Archetypes/2021 Full Length Review

 

  Devil's  Looking  Glass  are  a  musical  project  from  Tennessee  that  plays  a  mixture  of  southern  goth  and  dark  folk  music  with  some  touches  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  album  "Treacherous  Autumnal  Wisdom"  which  was  released  by  Moonlight  Cypress  Archetypes.

  Americana  style  folk  instruments  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  clean  vocals  a  few  seconds  later.  Black  metal  screams  are  also  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  album  along  with  some  tracks  also  showing  an  influence  of  country  music  as  well  as  adding  in  a  southern  gothic  atmosphere  at  times.

  When  electric  guitars  are  added  onto  the  recording  they  also  add  in  some  old  school  metal  style  solos  and  leads  as  well  as  some  melodic  riffs  which  also  gives  the  album  more  variety.  All  of  the  tracks  also  sound  very  different  from  each  other  along  with  some  of  the  songs  also  being  instrumentals  and  the  closing  song  is  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  Devil's  Looking  Glass  plays  a  musical  style  that takes  southern  gothic,  Americana,  country  and  dark  folk  and  mixes  them  together  with  some  touches  of  black  metal  and  hard  rock  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  lyrics  cover  miserable  tales  of  lost  and  woe  with  some  references  to  the  old  gods  set  in  an  Appalachian  Haze.

  In  my  opinion  Devil's  Looking  Glass  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  southern  gothic  and  dark  folk  with  some  touches  of  black  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  musical  project.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Her  House"  "Paint  Mountain"  "Go  Dig  My  Grave"  and  "Wodenstag".  8  out  of  10.

  Electronic  music  style  synths  start  off  the  album  while  all  of  the  drum  beats  are  also  programmed.  Vocals  are  done  in  mostly  a  clean  goth  rock  style  along  with  the  whispers  also  adding  in  a  touch  of  black  metal  and  at  times  the  bass  guitars  also  bring  in  a  very  powerful  sounding  post  punk  style.

Deeper Graves/The Colossal Sleep/Disoder Recordings/2022 Full Length Review

 

  Deeper  Graves  is  a  solo  project  of  Jeff  Wilson  best  known  for  his  work  in  Abigail  Williams,  Nachtmystium,  Wolvhammer,  Chrome  Waves  and  Contrition  and  on  this  recording  goes  for  more  of  a  mixture  of  post  punk,  shoegaze  and  alternative  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  album  "The Colossal  Sleep "  which  will  be  released  in  2022  by  Disorder  Recordings.

  Atmospheric  sounding  synths  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  post  rock  style  clean  playing  a  few  seconds  later.  All  of  the  drum  beats  are  programmed  while  the  bass  guitars  are  also  utilized  as  a  lead  instrument  at  times  along  with  the  guitar  solos  and  leads  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  shoegaze  style.

  Vocals  are  done  in  mostly  a  clean  style  as  well  as  showing  an  influence  of  goth  rock  at  times  while  the  songs  also  mix  in  a  great  amount  of  post  punk  elements.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  some  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  all  of  the  music  sticks  to  either  a  slow  or  mid  paced  direction  and  touches  of  alternative  rock  can  also  be  heard  at  times.

  In  my  opinion  Deeper  Graves  is  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  post  punk,  shoegaze  and  alternative  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  solo  project.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Feverish  Dreams"  and  "Distant  Fires".  8  out  of  10.

Fetters/We Deserve To Die/Pacific Threnodies/2021 CD Review

 

  Fetters  are  a  duo  from  Morror  Bay,  California  that  plays  a  mixture  of  death  industrial,  goth  and  darkwave  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  album  "We  Deserve  to  die"  which  was  released  by  Pacific  Threnodies.

  Synths  which  also  use  a  variety  of  many  different  sounding  keys  and  programmed  beats  start  off  the  album  while  the  music  also adds  in  a  great  amount  of  industrial  elements.  Death  metal  growls  are  also  utilized  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  along  with  some  spoken  word  parts  also  beings  added  into  some  parts  of  the  album.

  Influences  of  goth  rock  and  darkwave  are  also  utilized  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  while  power  electronics  can  also  be  heard  at  times.  The  songs  also  avoid  the  use  of  any  other  musical  instrument  besides  the  synths,  programming  and  vocals  along  with  all  of  the  tracks  also  sounding  very  different  from  each  other,  whispers  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  all  of  the  music  sticks  to  either  a  slow  or  mid  tempo  direction,  one  song  also  adds  in  a  brief  use  of  melodic  chants.

  Fetters  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  industrial,  goth,  darkwave,  power  electronics  and  death  metal  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  lyrics  cover  psychic  self-destruction  of  the  individual.  

  In  my  opinion  Fetters  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  death  industrial,  goth  and  darkwave  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  duo.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "No  Future"  "Our  Concrete  Sepulchres"  "Birthright"  and  "Thre  Dying  Light".  8  out  of  10.

Rope Sect/Proskynesis/Iron Bonehead Productions/2021 EP Review

 

  Rope  Sect  are  a  band  from  Germany  that h as  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this recording  plays  a  minimalist  form  of  deathrock  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  ep  "Proskynesis"  which  was  released  by  Iron  Bonehead  Productions.

  Clean  playing  starts  off  the  ep  while  also  adding  in  elements  of  post  punk  and  goth  rock  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  The  vocals  are  also  done  in  a  very  clear  deathrock  style  as  well  as  the  music  also  being  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  80's  era.

  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  the  heavier  riffs  also  show  an  influence  of  the  darker  side  of  metal.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  along  with  one  song  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  grim  black  metal  vocals  and  blast  beats,  most  of  the  music  also  sticks  to  either  a  slow  or  mid  tempo  direction  and  also  has  its  minimalist  moments.

  On  this  recording  Rope  Sect  goes  into  more  of  a  minimalist  deathrock  direction  as  well  as  keeping  some  of  the  post  punk  and  metal  influences  of  previous  releases.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Rope  Sect  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  minimalist  deathrock,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Proskynesis  II"  and  "Lava".  8  out  of  10.

All My Faith Lost.../Untitled/Cyclic Law/2021 CD Review

 

  All  My  Faith  Lost...  are  a  band  from  Italy  that  plays  a  mixture  of  ethereal,  darkwave,  goth,  dark  ambient  and  neo-folk  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  album  "Untitled"  which  was  released  by  Cyclic  Law.

  Dark  ambient  style  synths  start  off  the  album  while  the  acoustic  guitars  also  bring  in  elements  of  neo-folk.  Vocals  are  done  in  a  very  clean  ethereal  style  which  also  adds  in  some  touches  of  goth  and  darkwave  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  stringed  instruments  and  one  of  the  tracks  is  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  At  times  the  music  also  captures  a  very  tragic  and  poetic  atmosphere  while  also  adding  in  some  medieval  touches.  Male  vocals  are  also  added  on  some  of  the  tracks  along  with  each  song  also  sounding  very  different  from  each  other  as  well  as  a  later  track  also  introducing  whispered  vocals  onto  the  recording.  

  All  My  Faith  Lost...  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  ethereal,  darkwave,  goth,  darkwave,  dark  ambient  and  neo-folk  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of t heir  own.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  lyrics  covers  surrealism,  human  estrangement  from  nature,  death,  afterlife,  Greek  Mythology  and  the  darker  aspects  of  love.

  In  my  opinion  All  My  Fait  Lost...  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  ethereal,  darkwave,  goth,  dark  ambient,  and  neo-folk  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "We  All  Die  Sometimes"  "Keeping  Time"  "Awakening  The  Moon"  and  "The  Night  Is  Calm".  8  out  of  10.

  Morningstar  Delirium  are  a  duo  from  Colorado  with  members  of  Dreadnaught  and  The  Flight  of  Sleipnir  and  plays  a  mixture  of  ethereal  wave,  post  punk,  dark  industrial,  goth,  shoegaze,  drone,  downtempo  and  ambient  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  titled  and  self  released  2021  ep.    

  Atmospheric  sounding  drones  start  off  the  ep  along  with  some  programmed  beats  a  few  seconds later  which  also  introduces  elements  onto  the  recording  a  few  seconds  later.  Vocals  are  done  in  mostly  a  clean  yet  ethereal  style  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  some  downtempo  touches  and  electric  guitars  can  also  be  heard  at  times.

  A  couple  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  good  amount  of  ambient  style  keyboards  and  synths.  Real  drums  are  also  utilized  in  some  parts  of  the  recording  along  with  one  track  also  introducing  acoustic  guitars  onto  the  recording  as  well  as  the  tracks  also  showing  some  influences  of  of  goth  and  post  punk,  male  vocals  and  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  shoegaze  style  sounds  are  also  utilized  more  as  the  ep  progresses.

Unalei/Galatea/2020 CD Review

 

  Unalei  are  a  musical  project  from  Italy  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  mixture  of  ethereal,  goth, progressive  and  folk  with  some  touches  of  post  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2020  album  "Galatea".

  Classical  music  style  keyboards  start  off  the  album  along  with  a  brief  use  of  nature  sounds  while  the acoustic  guitars  also  bring  in  elements  of  folk  music  when  they  are  utilized.  Vocals  are  mostly  done  in  a  clean  style  as  well  as  the  music  also  bringing  in  some  symphonic  and  orchestra  sounds  and  the  electric  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.  

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  then  while  the  music  also  captures  a  goth  orientated  atmosphere  at  times.  When  female  vocals  are  utilized  they  also  give  the  music  more  of  an  ethereal  and  operatic  atmosphere  along  with  some  tracks  also  adding  in  percussion's.

  The  songs  also  use  a  variety  of  many  different  types  of  folk  instruments,  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  as  well  as  one  track  also  introducing  whispered  vocals  onto  the  recording  along  with  some  songs  also  being  instrumentals  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts  and  black  metal  screams  can  also  be  heard.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  a  mixture  Italian,  Spanish,  Russian  and  English  and  is  a  concept  album  based  upon  the  discovery  of  roots  through  time  and  space.

  Italy's  solo  project  Helfir  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  more  of  a  mixture  of  dark  rock  and  gothic  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2020  album  "The  Journey"  which  was  released  by  My  Kingdom  Music.

  Programmed  electronic  beats  and  atmospheric  sounding  keyboards  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  clear  goth  rock  style  vocals  a  few  seconds  later.  Clean  guitars  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  the  recording  along  with  one  track  also  introducing  operatic  female  vocals  into  the  music  and  acoustic  guitar's  are  also  utilized  at  times.

  When  electric  guitars  are  added  into  the  music  they  also  add  in  the  heaviness  of  goth  metal  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.  Some  of  the  slower  riffing  also  adds  in  a  touch  of  doom  metal  along  with  all  of  the  songs  sounding  different  from  each  other  which  also  gives  the  album  a  lot  more  diversity.

Rope Sect/The Great Flood/Iron Bonehead Productions/2020 CD Review

 

  Rope  Sect  are  a  band  from  Germany  that  plays  death  rock  with  a  touch  of  black metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2020  album  "The  Great  Flood"  which  was  released  by  Iron  Bonehead  Productions.

  Spoken  word  parts  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  harder  direction  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  style.  At  times  the  music  also  captures  the  raw  energy  of  post  punk  along  with  the  vocals  being  done  in  a  very  clean  goth  rock  style  and  the  music  also  adds  in  the  aggression  of  metal  at  times.

  Black  metal  screams  can  also  be  heard  briefly  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to them.  A  lot  of  the  music  is  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  80's  death  rock  style  but  done  with  a  more  modern  day  atmosphere  along  with  some  tracks  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  clean  playing,  a  couple  of  tracks  also  adds  in  a  brief  use  of  blast  beats  as  well  as  keeping  the  music  to  mostly  a  slow  or  mid  tempo  direction.

  Rope  Sect  plays  a  musical style  that  is  mostly  rooted  in  goth  and  death  rock  as  well  as  adding  in  some  elements  of  post  punk  and  black  metal  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  apocalyptic  themes.

  Sweden's  Aracana  are  a  band  from  Sweden  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  went  for  a  mixture  of  darkwave,  ethereal,  dark  ambient  and  neo  classical  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2002  album  "Inner  Pale  Sun"  which  was  re-issued  in  2020  by  Cyclic  Law.

  A  very  dark  and  symphonic  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  the  synths  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  ambient  elements  as  well  as  using  a  variety  of  many  different  sounding  keys.  Percussion's  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  the  recording  and  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  tribal  feeling  along  with  some  operatic  voices  also  being  utilized  at  times.

  Touches  of  neo  classical  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  recording  while  the  vocals  are  done  in  a  clean  goth  rock  style.  Whispers  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  music  along  with  some  tracks  also  adding  in  acoustic  guitars  and  Dulcimer's  as  well  as  the  chants  also  giving  the  music  more  of  an  ethereal  atmosphere.

All  of  the  songs  also  sound  very  different  from  each  other.  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  female  vocals  can  also  be  heard  as  well  as  one  of  the  tracks  also  being  an  instrumental.  along  with  the  tracks  also  capturing  a  medieval  atmosphere. The  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark,  melancholic  and  poetic  themes.

  This  is  a  review  of  a  3  way  split  review  between  Greece/Sweden's  Shibalba,  Belgium's  Dead  Man's  Hill  and  Norway's  Deathwalk  called  "The  Circular  Shades  Of  the  Equinox"  which  was  released  by  Zazen  Sunds  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Shibalba  who  return  with  their  mixture  of  ritual  and  dark  ambient.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  dark  soundscapes and  ambient  style  synths  while  all  of  their  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  ritualistic  sounding  along  with  some  melodic  chants  also  being  added  into  some  parts  of  there  side  of  the  recording.

  Programmed  beats  are  also  added  into  some  parts  of  the  songs  along  with  some  rain  and  thunder  sounds  as  well  as  some  ethnic  style  instruments  are  also  added  onto  the  second  track.  When  spoken  word  parts  and  whispers  are  utilized  they  also  enhance  the  ritualistic  atmosphere  of  the  music  and  all  of  the  tracks  also  sound  very  different  from  each  other  and  at  times  the  music  also  gets  very  experimental  sounding.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  lyrics  cover  the  Akashic  Records,  Theosophy  and  Left  hand  Path  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great sounding  recording  from  Shibalba  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  dark  ambient  and  ritual,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Akashic  Visions  II".

  Next  up  is  Dead  Man's  Hill  who  returns  with  a  mixture  of   dark  ambient,  ritual,  goth ,  drone  and  neo-classical.

  His  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  synths  which  also  brings  in  elements  of  dark  ambient  and  neo-classical  while  the  programmed  beats  also  gives the  songs  more  of  a  militant  feeling.  When  clean  vocals  are  utilized  they  also  add  some  gothic  rock  influences  onto  his  side  of  the  recording.  

  Most  of  his  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  the  music  also  having  its  ritualistic  moments.  Atmospheric  sounding  drones  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  music  as  well  as  all  of  the  songs  also  sounding  very  different  from  each  other  and  the  vocals  also  have  their  operatic  moments.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  lyrics  cover  Occultism  and  Left  hand  Path  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Dead  Man's  Hill  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  dark  ambient, drone,  goth,  neo-classical  and  ritual,  you  should  check  out  his  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "My  Body  Is  the  Universe  in  The  Body".

  Next  up  is  Deathwalk  a  solo  project  that  plays  a  very  sinister  and  ritualistic  form  of  dark  ambient.

  His  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  dark  soundscapes  while  all  3  of  his  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  Programmed  beats  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  his  side  of  the  recording  along  with  the  distorted  sounding  spoken  word  parts  also  adding  in  some  touches  of  black  metal  into  the  music.

  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  ritualistic  sounding  along with  the  songs  also  adding  in  some  elements  of  dark  ambient.  All  3  of  his  tracks  also  sound  very  different  from each  other  as  well  as  adding  in  some  touches  of  noise  and  death  industrial  into  certain  sections  of  his  music,  demonic  voices  can  also  be  heard  briefly.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  song  themes  focus  on  the  O.N.A  and  sinister  traditions  of  Satanism  and  the  Left  Hand  Path.

 In  my  opinion  Deathwalk  are  a  very  great sounding  sinister  and  ritualistic  dark  ambient  solo  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  his  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Daemonic  Order  Procession".

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  the  more  ritualistic  and  occult  styles  of  dark  ambient.  8/5  out  of  10.

  Dark  ambient  style  synths  start  off  the  album  while  also  using  a  variety  of  many  different  sounding  keys  and  adding  in  elements  of  dungeon  synth.  Programmed  beats  are  also  added  into  some  parts  of  the  recording  and  they  also  give  the  music  more  of  a  ritualistic  atmosphere  and  most  of  the  tracks  are  also  instrumentals.

  All  of the  tracks  also  sound  very  different  from  each  other  while  also  capturing  the  atmosphere  of  a  gothic  horror  movie  soundtrack  at  times.  On  one  of  the  tracks  the  programmed  beats  also give  the  music  more  of  a  tribal  feeling  along  with  the music  also  bringing  in  a  great  amount  of  influence's  from  the  90's  era.

  Victorian  Witch  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  ritualistic  dark  ambient,  goth  and  dungeon  synth  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  his  own  as  well  as  keeping  everything  instrumental.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  song  themes  focus  on  the  occult  and  writings  of  Edgar  Allan  Poe.  H.P  Lovecraft  and  Mary  Shelley.

  In  my  opinion  Victorian  Witch  are  a  very great  sounding  mixture  of  ritualistic  dark  ambient,  goth  and  dungeon  synth  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres, you  should  check  out  this  solo  project.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Tomb  Of  Sarah"  and  "The  Body  Snatcher".8out  of  10.

  Autumn  Tears  are  a  band  from  Billerica,  Massachusetts  that  has been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  mixture  of  neo-classical,  cinematic  score  and  world  music  and this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  double  album  "The  Air  Below  The  Water".

  Operatic  female  vocals  start  off  the album  while  the  music  also  brings  in  a  great  amount  of  cinematic  soundscapes.  Violins  and  cellos  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  the  recording  along  with  some  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  tragic  sounding  pianos  and  the  music  also  brings  in  a  lot  of  neo-classical  elements.

  Orchestras  are  also  utilized  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  album  while  also  giving  the  music  more  of  a  symphonic  feeling.  When  snare  drums  and  percussion  are  utilized  they  bring  in  more  of  an  epic  atmosphere  along  with  all  of  the  tracks  sounding  very  different  from  each  other  as  well  as  adding  in some  goth  and  ethereal  touches.
